AbiWord _Portable_2.4.5.exe is not supported archive.

I am having a problem extracting my previously downloaded AbiWord_Portable_2.4.5.exe file.
When I double click the file I get the expected "7-Zip self-extracting archive" dialogue box but when I click the "Extract" button, I constantly get a 7-Zip Diagnostic message dialogue box which indicates that: "C:\..........\AbiWord_Portable_2.4.5.exe is not supported archive.
I have used several Portable Apps before and never encountered this problem in the past and I am familiar with the usual routine of extracting and using these types of applications.
I would appreciate any suggestions as to what the problem could be and how to fix it.
Thank you.

Corrupted

That means the file was corrupted. Usually, this is due to a corruption during the download process. Since it worked previously for you, it could be due to either a virus or logical errors on your drive. The self-extractor checks its own integrity when you start it up to ensure that it doesn't have an issue like this. Check your PC, check your drive and download a new one.

Difficulty in extracting Abiword and ClamWin

Hi John.

Thanks for your prompt response.
I really am really at my wits end.
I have down loaded the file four time without any problem and I am at a loss to understand how this corruption that you mention could happen just with this exe file four times in a row.
On each occasion When I attempt to extract the file I get the error message as indicated above.
I did an virus scan of my system using A fully updated installation of NOD32 as well as on line scans at Symantec....Both scans yielded NO Problems.

I have done anti-Spyware scans with updated versions of Webroot Spy Sweeper; Adaware; Spybot S&D and Ewido....on all occasions NO problems or spyware noted.

I get the same frustrating response when I tried to extract Clamwin again the message to the effect that the exe file is not supported archive.

Just to test your theory that there is "corruption during the download process", I did in fact down load 7-Zip portable. Again absolutely NO problem with the down load and on this occasion the file extracted normally.
I similarly have downloaded and successfully extracted Firefox Portable, Thunderbird Portable and Sunbird portable, all without a hitch and working perfectly on my computer.

I have a fast new computer setup with a fast trouble free ADSL connection ALL in perfect running order.

Except when I try to extract Abiword and ClamWin Portable.(after four separate and trouble free downloads)

I would really appreciate some help over here and not to be simply fobbed of with the obvious explanations that I have all ready ruled out before I posted the question on the forum in the first place.

Many thanks for your assistance it is much appreciated.

Zip

There's obviously something up with your connection or your computer... or the mirror you're selecting from SourceForge. Try grabbing the Zip file instead (you'll notice that every app has a Zip Download link under the Download Now button).

Zip file worked fine.

Hi John

I tried the zip file on your suggestion and it worked fine no problem with the extraction.
Just for my own curiosity I tried the regular exe file again...with the same problems as above.
I would think this disproves your suggestion that there is something wrong with my computer and/or connection since both are working properly.
In all seriousness (and with every humility) I would suggest that you check to see if the exe file on your site has not perhaps become corrupted.
At any rate many thanks for your suggestion.
I really enjoy the portable apps and I have recommended then successfully to many of my friends.

I did

I checked 5 different mirrors when you reported the problem. All worked fine. I also verified extraction on multiple operating systems on my end. No issues at all.

The problem really is either your connection or your computer. AbiWord Portable was downloaded 5,000 times in just the last 7 days... if there were a corrupt archive, we'd all be hearing about it in the forums.

Glad you like the apps, though. Smile

Still confused by the extraction problem.

If that is the case, then how do you explain the fact that the zip file downloaded normally and after extraction, Abiword is functioning properly.
Please do not take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to be argumentative or cleaver, but I really am at a loss to understand how I could be having a connection problem (or for that matter) a computer problem that only affects the exe file download and specifically not the zip file download?

Specific to your computer

When I say specific to you, I mean there is most likely a software issue on your computer. Something that is incompatible with the 7-Zip self extractor bits, most likely. It's something specific to you either way, as yours is the only report amongst millions of downloads. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do to help you diagnose it further.

deactivate firewall?

Which firewall are you using? A few versions of the ZoneAlarm firewall were known to interefere with the downloaded bits and corrupt things (I got mangled text for a while). You could try to download the file with your firewall (even if it's not ZA) deactivated, just for the time of that one download.

7-Zip self-extracting archive problem

John,
This happened to me as well with 3 programs "AbiWord," "Sudoku," and "7-Zip".
I downloaded them through SupurbNet in McLean, VA directly to the usb drive.
I found that downloading to my hard drive first and then installing from there to the usb drive resolved the problem for AbiWord. With 7-Zip I was able to just download it again to the usb drive and over write the origional file, then instalation worked. Sudoku is a game, I'll try to retry that when I have some more time. Thanks for all the awsome work you are doing on this project.

A couple of usefull additions (free) I have found are
OS: Puppy Linux - Linux os designed for USB drive
Utils: 2split.exe - a stand alone file splitting utility.
Utils: MD5 Check - another stand alone utility.
Secure Surfing: TorPark - which I am investigating,(Thanks to David Ip)
I cant wait to try the Mac on a stick!

I would be interested in seeing what other stand alone applications(portable apps)some of the users/administrators out there keep in their USB "Tool box"
Keep up the good work. Smile
