yep, sorry

yep, sorry about that. Dropbox itself is down:

Dropbox.comWe're currently experiencing a brief outage and are working on restoring service. Don't worry, your files are safe.

Hopefully they'll be up again soon.

Feedback

Used this on XP SP3 with admin rights. Worked without issue.

Suggest making the default open file folder X:\Documents\Pictures as does XnView Portable.

With permission of the Photofiltre developer you don't need to do this as an online installer. You may want to get more specific clarification from Selon to be safe then you can include the files with the launcher:)

Thanks for taking the

Thanks for taking the Regshot! That's very much appreciated.

I'll talk to the Photofiltre developer some more and see if I can bundle the files; that would make life much easier. If he says yes, getting permission to set the default Open folder should be pretty darn easy.

I'll keep you guys updated as I find out more.

Cheers!

File / Directory left behind

I tested the latest update on XP SP3, and everything works fine, but one file is left behind when the program closes:

C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\PhotoFiltre\PhotoFiltre.ini

Good work!

I thought I bypassed that this time

That's odd. I thought having Photofiltre.ini in App\Photofiltre would avoid creating that file in %APPDATA%, and my tests (also on XP SP3) seemed to confirm that.

Please could you check and see if App\Photofiltre\Photofiltre.ini exists while Photofiltre Portable is running?

Thanks!

Found typo in

Found typo in PhotoFiltrePortable.ini:

Is:

[FilesMove]
Photofiltre.ini=%PAL:AppDir%\Photofiltre

Should be:

[FilesMove]
settings\Photofiltre.ini=%PAL:AppDir%\Photofiltre

With that adjustment, it works.

The same time you could change in [FileWrite1]

File=%PAL:DataDir%\Photofiltre.ini

to

File=%PAL:DataDir%\settings\Photofiltre.ini

accordingly to repair drive letter changing. Wink

That's really odd

It should work without needing to have Photofiltre.ini in Data\settings. Data should be just fine.

Did you try a clean installation to see if something in your old install was the issue there?

Thanks for this hint. That fixed it! Wink
Your previous dev test 6.4.0 had the Photofiltre.ini located in settings and the update preserved that file. So, after the update no new ini was copied from DefaultData to the Data folder and the file handling broke (see above). Maybe you add that hint to your description (delete old installation) because you changed the structure of the Data folder with this release => no update possible.

Custom code

I can handle that with a bit of custom code in the installer. I'll take care of that as soon as I get a chance.

Maybe an entry

Maybe an entry [FilesToRemove] in installer.ini may do the trick (would scrap user settings though).

Nope

A few lines of NSIS would move the settings file from Data\settings to Data on install. I'm just waiting to see if a clean install fixes old_man's problem, since it's pointless to write and push an update if I just end up going back to Data\settings.

Hmm.

Maybe I'm misundertanding, but it sounds like you just moved the .ini file in the DefaultData folder and now old settings won't work?

If so, just another line in FilesMove moving it from the old spot to the new spot would work I would think.

EDIT: Oh, nevermind. Now I see the predicament since you wouldn't want it moved back to the old spot (didn't think of that). I have this problem with Marble and I hadn't thought out the solution apparently.

Basically not really needed.

As this is a development test (alpha release) it would just be a correction of a change in design. From now on the data structure stays the same so the custom code would be only for coping with that design decision and become useless thereafter. I for one would add a comment to the release notes to backup/manually move settings if it matters to anyone. It's not that photofiltre's settings are tricky to reconstruct...

On the other hand it would be nice for people who don't update to newer dev tests as older versions might be affected once this may become official some time.

ok

Good point about this just being a dev test. I'll just make a quick change to the release notes and leave custom code alone.

Thanks for the input!

Custom Code not needed.

I actually tested what I mentioned before and it works as desired. Not really needed as already said, but this is what I'm doing for Marble.

[DirectoriesMove]
.marble=%PAL:DataDir%\settings\.marble
.marble=%APPDATA%\.marble

EDIT: Sigh. Nevermind, again. Inevitably the folder gets put where it needs to go, but the app creates new settings since .marble goes to %PAL:DataDir%\settings\.marble during run.

What!?

What on earth are you trying to do there? Please don't ever do anything like this!

If you need to reorganise folder structure, this should be done in the installer, not the launcher.

Photofiltre.ini

I checked, and the file Photofiltre.ini in App\Photofiltre is not used - nor changed when I change the settings of the program.

PhotoFiltre makes the ini file in %APPDATA% regardless of any ini file being present in its own directory.

Photofiltre.ini

Problem seems to be solved. I reinstalled the program and corrected the App\AppInfo\Launcher\PhotoFiltrePortable.ini file as suggested above before starting the program. I also compared my new install to the previous one, and I noted that in the previous install - for some reason or another - the file Photofiltre.ini was missing from the Data\settings directory. That must have been the culprit.

Everything working as it should now. I did a couple of regshot tests, and there all OK.

I'm glad to hear you got it

I'm glad to hear you got it working, but I'm still very puzzled about why Data\settings would work and Data wouldn't. If you try a clean installation without modifying the launcher (App\AppInfo\Launcher\PhotofiltrePortable.ini), does it still work or does it go back to creating a file in %APPDATA%?

install with unmodified launcher

Yes, it goes back to creating the file in %APPDATA% - and I'm stuck with the same problem as before. Don't ask me why - I'm no expert in this Wink

Maybe OS?

What OS are you using? I'm working on a couple of XP machines, but Vista/Seven may not behave the same way XP does.

Out of curiosity...

Did you do a fresh installation (deleting the old folder first) or an update over an existing one? That was my fault at first (see above). It behaves different if an older version exists because of a slightly different Data structure.

tried both installs again

I tried it again yesterday - and I made certain that no traces were left from the previous times I installed the program. Then I installed it in its original form. This seems to work, with the original settings in the launcher ini file, and with Photfiltre.ini in the Data folder.

A new install, and the modified ini file for the launcher, and Photofiltre.ini in the Data\settings folder seems to work too.

Any other combination of the Photofiltre.ini file and PhotoFiltrePortable.ini (the launcher file) produces and leaves the Photofiltre.ini file in Documents and settings.

I retried both installs twice, and got the same resulte. I made very clear that I used a clean system in all cases, so I'm quite confident of the results. So it now seems to work either way - I must have messed up the first time.

(I'm using XP SP3)

Looks like just an upgrade hiccup, then

It looks like your installation just got messed up by the update, then. I'm glad to hear it's behaving as expected now.

Thanks for running those tests!
