USB Vaccine

I saw this on lifehacker, and thought you folks might be interested in it.
http://lifehacker.com/5470757/panda-usb-vaccine-protects-your-pc-from-au...

Panda will create a password protected autorun.inf file so viruses cannot modify it.

I don't know how well this works, or weather I could screw up portableapps as I use linux and haven't tested. But its something to look into, and maybe even make a portableapps spinoff of it?

Enjoy. For me its back to under my rock. Smile

Won't Work

From the article, it just creates an autorun.inf marked hidden and read-only (possibly system as well). An infected PC can still modify it and then the drive can spread it to other PCs.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Still Useful

It'd still be useful for some technophobes running XP though (like my advisory teacher).

Technophobes??

As a tech guy running XP Pro SP3, I deeply resent that comment. Blum j/k

Seriously, XP still has the majority of the market share, right? (It did last time I checked, but that was awhile ago)

XP is still run where I work.

XP is still run where I work. Big reason is one of the back bone pieces of software they use is NOT compatible with Win7. Otherwise, the main tech would upgrade everything.

Also, I still run XP on my desktop as I don't have enough RAM for Win7.

My parents definitely don't have enough RAM.

I'm also not interested in trying to pick through the complexities of Win7. I don't have time to learn it other then when I have to from using it on my work machine.

Its a nice system, I guess. To much eyecandy though.

Used to hate Win7

Look, I used to hate Win7, and now I endorse it wholeheartedly. You do need at least 1GB of RAM to run it, though. Just testing it, I tried to install my copy on an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 2.2GHz box with 512MB of RAM and onboard video... it refused. It flat out refused to install. I advised the user to upgrade his RAM and get Win7 but in the meantime gave him the XP Home OEM install that matched his sticker.

The "eye candy" is nice, I wouldn't call it too much though. XP is a little loud with the default green and blue, and the other two options are outright ugly. The Media Center theme is absolutely beautiful (the pirated one that everyone who doesn't have Media Center has is called Royale) with a metallic blue on the taskbar and a royal blue start button. The two-tone style is nice as well. That and the login screen from XPize is the only way I'd have my XP when I ran that OS. That you had to go third-party to make the OS look good is sad. You can make Win7 look any way you want it, except the start button, haven't figured that out yet.

I love being able to drag a window to the left or right side to maximize to that half of the screen, or being able to 'peek' at my desktop or minimize everything by pointing at or clicking on the box to the right of the clock. And one of the best features is the search box on the start menu. Forget digging through Control Panel. Just type in part of what you want to do in the search bar and it'll be displayed. Win7 is real smart, it looks great, it's very modern, but not as loud as XP was in 2002. It seems stable, though only time will tell with that. I only have a 2GHz single core proc with 2GB of RAM and it runs good. Not great -- XP flew -- but acceptable.
