The menu is great, didn't have any problems. I wish you have enough time to finish the features you want to be in the next release(updater,...).I would like to help on the development of the platform or any thing else that you need, just tell what you need and if i can i will help.

There are some posts that's better to don't waste your time with. That's one of the reasons why things here don't go faster, because people make you waste time complaining about already explained things or requesting already requested features.

Just my 2 cents. Wink
Sorry for my bad English.

I honestly DON'T understand this anger

is someone going starving because these features are not implemented yet?

homeless?

dying of an incurable disease?

no?

then enjoy what is there - and for FREE and get over it

Totally agree

first of all I would like to say that Mr Jhon is a great person, he used his time to give (for free) a very good plataform, and he never asked anything back, so it would be nice, if people just show some appreciation instead of cursing

I'm from Brazil, sorry my bad english :S

Who knows...

It's probably because of the given subject: The PA.c menu.

It could be the users, too. Pardon

Well then pay for it. Maybe then john will have more time to work on it because he needs money to suport himself too you know. So if you feel that strongly about it contribute. Otherwise don't complain about "something i didn't even pay for".

Windows Classic theme still works

The theme I created and mentioned here:

https://portableapps.com/node/21632

still works with beta4. It's a very basic theme meant to blend in with the "Windows Classic" look and feel from Win2000 and earlier. It's also a bit of a performance improvement for use over VNC/RDP connections because it avoids using gradients/dithers on colors. You can get it directly here:

http://www.duh.org/windowsclassic.patheme

I've released this to the public domain. John, you're free to slurp it into the official distribution if you like.

I want to help, I want to be a part of it if I can

Ive been in this community for a little while and I am loving it, everyonve is really nice and adds something to this place. I want to be a part of it. So far I feel horrible for being a leecher that just bombards the forums with questions lol. I dont have much in the way of program development skill/knowledge, but I think that if I took a bit of time at looking at the programming breakdown, Id be able to play with it, and be able to contribute. So, that said. . . How do I look at the program? Do I need C++?

That depends on what you're

That depends on what you're wanting to help with. The PortableApps.com Platform is written in Delphi, using the non-free 2003 version. (I think that's the right one)

Other applications are written in different languages, pretty much anything you can think of.

I hope you can find the right way to help, feel free to keep asking questions, we don't mind. Smile

Plain text

Most source code is plain-text readable, and the PortableApps.com Platform is no exception. You can find the source here (direct download link, parent page here). It is in .7z format and can be opened with, among other things, 7-zip Portable. Not sure exactly which file you want, but it should be the biggest one. It might not be a .txt file, but you can open it with Notepad++ Portable or another text editor.

To compile it you need the full, paid program but you can also send it to someone who has the program to compile it, I suppose, but you'd need to work that out with them. (I haven't got it.)

THANK YOU ^_^

That was extremely helpful. Im sure there is already reason that this hasnt been adjusted, but Id like to be able to see what additions, adjustments, or whatever would be necessary to allow the program to recognize which ver of windows is being run and piggyback off of GUI filters if possible or something cool. "I have a dream" lol. . . but often my dreams, visions, and ideas are unable to come to fruition. Anyways, thank you very much again, I appreciate it. I won't be so arrogant as to make promises (cuz honestly Im to ignorant to believe i could do any changes. Programming takes years to understand, and Im just jumping into it. BUT I really really really hope to be able to do something lol. So who knows, maybe Ill jut be able to click my heels XP. Thanks again.

Well, I skimmed through all the posts for the first time...

and I didn't find anything mentioning a bug where when you press alt and you see the first letter of the options on the side underlined and you press that letter on the keyboard (whats that term?) it doesn't do anything. I kept trying for like 3 minutes and I declared it a bug (at least to me its a bug).

Could you fix that or just make the letters not underline when you press alt?

Thanks.

Never heard of that feature, but I tried it, and my results are the same. No go.

IMHO this feature seems really unnecessary. How about if you hold ALT, a letter appears to the left of each app in the list, A-Z. If you scroll, the letters scroll with you, so as to support as many apps as you have as the menu doesn't even display 26 entries at a time. Example, you hold ALT and hit A, your first app launches. This might be useful...

Known Issue

This is a known issue. It actually shouldn't be enabled yet. It's an upcoming feature that's being worked on. The functionality isn't complete yet, but the GUI is (it should be disabled, though).

Video Driver

The only other thing I can suggest is to update the video driver. The method of transparency has been in use since Windows 9x, so it is pretty old hat. I've only seen issues around when when a video driver has gone wonky.

Windows 7 + Hotkeys

1) The hotkey (ALT+WIN+SPACE) does not work in Windows 7. This should certainly be addressed and perhaps an option to change the hotkey?

2) I'n not sure if this is intended or not but the icon is always visible on the toolbar. This is extremely annoying and if it is a feature should be a toggle option.

Thanks for the great software,

SpiffyJr

Glass

Hey, this was something Ive been curious about for a while now but didnt know how to convey it right so I decided not to bother (that and I feel like Im just hoping around the community asking "what if"s and "How do you"s without giving anything back) But I was reviewing the eXpresso beta thread and they summed up my thought in one word "glass" lol. Do you think that glass themeing will be an option in the near future? Itd be nice to have the menu with a translucent look. I know that lowering the opacity is already an option, but glass would allow the text to maintain its opacity while giving it a clean modern look.

Something in common

Hey, the Other night I had a problem with my computer and ended up reformatting and installing Vista again. Toward the top of this page (Page 2) of this thread, I had been talking about how when i used used a custom theme that has magenta in it, the magenta was visible in Win XP. Well, I ran into the same problem after the fresh Operating Sysytem install. The one thing in common with the fresh install and XP is that neither were using the Aero Appearance. Once I changes my computers "appearance" to Aero, everything was fine. So Appearantly PAP themes are Aero Specific?

Win95 not Aero

Like John said, the transparency channel has been in use since Windows '95, it's not new to Aero (2006-2007).

That said, I had the same problem in XP Sp3 before switching to Win7. It just started happening all of a sudden.

Just for details:
The first is an XP Home sp2 system
The second is a newly formatted system with Vista Home sp1.

There's no reason to maintain a custom name for something that has been hidden. Hide is to hide EXEs you don't want to see at all but can't be deleted as they are part of an app that is not PAF. This is done to keep the INI from getting bigger than it needs to be.

When you hide an entry, the custom name and favorite setting (if set) will be reset.

As far as I've

As far as I've been able to find out no... the only way to do it would be to modify the source and compile it from there. But then I could be wrong?

Yes and No

You cannot add a custom folder to the right side of the PA.c Menu, but you can do so on the left side (i.e: where your programs are listed) by following the instructions on this page:

https://portableapps.com/node/20498

It shouldn't be too hard to do it, just try to follow those instructions (of course, change the names of the folders from the examples in your own).

In the future, please use the search box located on the top right corner of every PortableApps.com page.

Note: In order to add custom folders to the right side of PA.c Menu, you would need to manually edit the source, and recompile it. Recompilation can only be done by using commercial (proprietary) software, as the program is written in such programming language. So naturally, that's not an option for most users (unless you are willing to waste a couple of hundred $$).

I hope this helped you!

Cheers Smile

Re: Folders

Folders/categories/whatever is probably the most often mentioned future feature. John is working on it, but he wants to make certain it's done well from the start.

May be John should add a message at the top of this thread like "I am working on Folders/categories. Please stop bothering me with it!"

PS. I myself have brought up this issue before, but that was before I've found out that my version of Delphi is too old to compile the code (I brought it up since I wanted to contribute, not moan).

Indexing and Search

hi

I am a new user of PortableApps. And I must say, what a wonderful job the developers have done. I also was wondering if I could make a few suggestion since 2.0 beta 4 is still on-going. What is the possibility of adding an search box on the menu to search the contents of the drive? And something less critical, how about the ability to customize the left-hand-side menu; as in creating shortcuts for any program/file from any part of the drive.

EDIT: yes I realize there is a search menu button on the right hand side, but it default so the Window Search, an integration with the Everything engine would be nice. And like I said, a search box right on the menu would be nice, And if the result could be shown on the left-hand side of the menu, it would be awesome (sort of like what windows start menu has, except with a better search engine of course). The current search options for drive, while computer, and web are great though.

I hope I don't sound pushy for a newcomer.

Again, great job to the development team, and the community in general for their support.

thanks a lot

Sam

Any chance we can get an official progress update?

No dates, PLEASE - projected dates are impossible to meet, and they don't help progress the development.

But can we get an idea of what's been accomplished in the coding, what's causing problems, and what's still just in the planning stage?
Or maybe what other things are getting in the way, such as commercial promotion, expansion into freeware, or lack of developers?
Has the decision to fold some apps (like the Updater or the PFA) into the platform causing insurmountable problems?

Please don't take this as a complaint or criticism of the work you are doing!
It's really just a plea for more real, concrete information than "it's coming soon".

Some apps use Mercurial, or Bugzilla, or Subversion - is there anything like that for the platform? I saw some post that said I should hang out in the IRC to get more info, but I never saw anything.

Thanks.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

At the moment the only way to use it ...

... is the same as for linux/nx - over wine.

A nativ Mac OSX version of OpenOffice.org Portable is under development at the moment but I don't believe that there are plans for the platform or other apps too, cause a lot of them has no Mac OSX versions and the way to make Apps portable for Mac OSX or othe nx systems is completely different to the windows versions.

[Bug] Free space meter not updated after uninstallation

The free space meter is updated when you reopen the main window, but immediately after uninstalling an app via the platform it doesn't update the meter to reflect the extra space you've just freed up. Also the message box button says "Ok"; it should say "OK".

[Bug] Can't show the menu in Wine

In Wine, having run the Platform and let the main window hide, left click on the tray icon didn't open the Platform; right click worked, but single click, double click, triple click, random clicking couldn't open the Platform window. I think that's a regression (in Beta 3 it just required you to click once to select the tray icon or something and then once more to open the window).

I haven't tried it more than once, and I should, but that was as I experienced it the first time.

And indeed, it's working again. I can't think of any variable that could affect it which could have changed except for the fact that I've updated Wine (1.1.42 to 1.1.43 in the Ubuntu PPA).

customizable folders

Hi, i'm in love with this plataform, it's just fantastic! but there is a thing i think should improve the plataform, sometimes I miss in the plataform a way to create our customizable folder in the right side (Documents, pictures, music and videos)
for example, in my case I don't carry videos in my flash drive, but i have a folder called "College", and would be very nice if i could access direct in the plataform, instead of the folder called "Videos" Biggrin

thanks in advanced

OK, I read the coment of dboki89, and I already know that way to add a folder on the left side(for me that look too ugly :S) what I said about add a customizable folder at the right side was just a sugestion to next versions Biggrin

ok

so I've tried this both on XP (SP2) and Vista Business... I noticed that refreshing the list of apps is MUCH faster on Vista than on XP. Not sure why... but just a heads up.

And can you make the default image in the menu that flash drive that you made the drive icon? I tried to edit the 48 x 48 px image and put it into the menu, came out a little blurry.

Does .patheme support GIFs and if not can you make the menu recognize it?

Anomaly?

Interesting thing keeps happening to me. I have 2 usb sticks plugged in one is recognized as drive L the other as drive M. Both contain PortableApps one is what I call my "main" stick the other is a "specialty" stick. Both have a different theme set so I can easily tell when I launch on which one I am using. Lately with neither launched I go to my computer, Drive M and click startportableapps.exe. Now the anomaly Drive M picks up the default app of drive L. I go into the options of M change it back and then restart it and it returns to L's default. Mind you L is just inserted the PA Menu is not launched.

Win7 taskbar icon

Ok, I know some people already wrote about that, but...

"Windows7TaskbarIcon=False" works, but you don't see taskbar icon at all (or see it always when =True).
After I recompiled under Delphi2009 (only changes was PAnsiChar -> PChar due to native Unicode, but that shouldn't affect it), program acts differently when "Windows7TaskbarIcon=False": when window active taskbar icon visible and icon disapears when window looses focus.

Downloaded version is 2.0 Beta 4 (exe's ProductVersion field) and compiled is 2.0Beta4 as well.

I also tried to mess with precompiled exe's window handles with Total Commander AceHelper plugin. That icon disappears only with TApplication's window is not visible - TfrmMenu visibility does not affect taskbar icon.

I think that might help a bit Smile

I look like a spammer cause I

Hey Mod Chris --- I look like a spammer cause I posted my link in the proflie field?.........Why the hell would I use a dang software site for spamming hound hunting...........My guess, 99.9% are not houndsmen, I am that .1%.

Sorry, I don't have a computer site, I am houndsmen who plays and works with computers. If you guys don't want people to enter a site in website profile field, then perhaps you guys should disable the function.

Thanks for making a long time app user feel welcomed after his very first post here.

I had never needed to ask a question therefore never registered......Only reason I registered today was the fact of the system tray but found the solution after I registered.

Would you be happy if I provided a screen shot of my computer with the app open to verify I am not a spammer?

I guess it's ok for others to post a non computer link in their profile field but I get slammed for it........Smells like an Animal Rights Freak has a problem.

We Have Issues With Spamming

Hi Buckshot101. Sorry for the odd first reception. We have a lot of issues with spammers on this forum. They often post links back to their sites in the forum signatures (which is not permitted under our forum guidelines, which aren't as obvious to commenters as they are to people creating topics) or as links in their profile. The spammers don't do this thinking we'll click on the links, they do this to attempt to increase their Google Page Rank (since we have a very popular site). Of course, all our links are marked NOFOLLOW so none of it will help them, but they continue anyway.

As this happens often, some of our mods are a little jumpy when new members have links in their signatures that seem to link to a site that is commercial or seems to be commercial. As this doesn't appear to be the case with you, please accept my apologies for your initial reception. I've ensured that your profile signature has been reset to blank. You can add a personal website as your homepage in your profile, but not commercial sites or sites designed to direct traffic to commercial sites. If you have additional questions, please feel free to make a post in the General Forum where we can better assist you.

Thanks.....Had the rule about

Thanks.....Had the rule about links in the signature block stated no links in signature settings of the user profile, I would have not added one..............but the signature block settings I showed a picture of makes no mention of that and actually tells you the links and email address will become links automatically....Perhaps that the text in the signature box setting needs to be updated to reflect the rule.

One of my forums has over 18,000 members, I know about the spammers and safeguards, LOL.

CMS Limitation

Sadly, it's a limitation of the CMS, Drupal. The signature uses the same text filter as the user has permission for... which for normal users posting comments and forum posts allows URLs. The list of what works is a technical list generated by Drupal to be helpful when editing a text field. We can't change it.

The forum guidelines state what is and isn't allowed in signatures by our actual rules, but a link to it can only be included for people making a post (forum topic) not replies (comments). We scrub all sigs with links on a semi-regular basis. I should up that to hourly or daily and then mods wouldn't have to worry about it. And, come to think of it, I may have a way to add the forum notes to the top of the comment reply page, too.

Sorry

I'm glad you're not a spammer, it's just the link was rather like a spam link. It didn't look like spam content though, so that's why I just changed the signature rather than blocking your account as I would have if it had been spam content. I'm glad that it's proven to be a false positive. I'm sorry if you took it the wrong way, it was a genuine mistake on my part.

[Bug] HTTP filenames "stick" with the personal picture

While fiddling for no appreciable reason, I found another bug, in the personal picture region. If you set it to an HTTP link, such as the PortableApps.com logo as an arbitrary example, (invisible download and storage in TEMP happens with Explorer at this point) when you go to change the personal picture again, you can't. Changing to anything else will lose the setting and it'll go back to that one from the web. I'm not clear on what it is that's causing it, I tried square brackets (as that's how it can end up when saved) but that didn't help.

And if you set it to a non-image source online, such as http://portableapps.com, you will become unable to set it to anything at all (other than hiding it with a right click), until you delete Data\PersonalPicture.png manually - the root cause seems to be that it fails to delete Data\PersonalPicture.png when it came from an http:// filename.

[Bug] ChineseSimplified.locale LocaleID incorrect

Just testing the SimpChinese launcher translation, I found a problem in the Platform: in ChineseSimplified.locale, the LocaleID is set to 936; this is the codepage, not the language ID. It should be 2052.

I think this might be a known issue but here it goes: in windows 7 home whenever I open the PAM the wallpaper slideshow gets destroyed and I have to manually reset it.

I made my own theme here:

Set the transparency to 10% so it looks good.
Feel free to modify or do whatever with the theme. I don't care. Smile

Locale corrections

I've just been checking the languages and have come across two more mistakes with locale IDs.

  • Luxembourgish does not have a locale ID assigned by Microsoft. Its LocaleID should probably be changed from 1033 (English) to 9999 (like Sundanese). (There are "French - Luxembourg" and "German - Luxembourg" in Microsoft's list, but I believe this "Luxembourgish" to be quite separate from both of these from a brief look in the files.)
  • Belarussian is a misspelling of Belarusian and should be renamed to that.

There are also the other matters which I mentioned to you today but I'm not certain you got all of them.

  • Farsi had a LocaleCode3 of "per/fas" which should be cut down to just "fas".
  • Sundanese and Vietnamese have invalid line breaks in a few places which meant their messages would get cut off (and they couldn't be read with Python's RawConfigParser which is stricter than normal INI parsing).
  • Simplified Chinese has a LocaleID 936 which is actually its codepage; it should be 2052. (Reported above but I'll put them all in one post here.)
  • Filipino has its LanguageCode, LocaleCode2 and Localeglibc all set to "fil" where they should all be "tl".

Filipino.

Not all of them, I don't believe (though I don't know what PA lang codes correspond to what other codes).

ISO 639-1 => tl
ISO 639-2 => fil
ISO 639-3 => fil

All two-letter

LanguageCode, LocaleCode2 and Localeglibc are all two-letter ones plus an optional locale specifier with the first and third (e.g. en-us for LanguageCode and en_US for Localeglibc). I didn't mention Code3 which is also fil because that's correct.

Where are we?

Now that we're getting into PA 2.0, what's the status on the platform? Not asking for a release date, just curious as to what issues remain before the new platform can be released.
