Xsane (scanner software)

Scanner Access Now Easy (SANE) is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, handheld scanner, video- and still-cameras, frame grabbers, etc.). The SANE API is public domain and its discussion and development is open to everybody. It is commonly used on Linux.

XSane is a graphical frontend for SANE.

Could some one make this portable. the problems i see would be the possible need for admin rights, some registry editing, settings, and the possible need for drivers. though i doubt the later due to SANE containing drivers for supported devices. thing is you cant use SANE drivers with lets say... anyother program other than xsane in windows.

not sure

if this all would work for windows.

The SANE itself seems not to have any binaries for windows and the front end xsane is meant according to the website for operating scanners connected to a unix machine via network from windows machine. It has to be placed in C:\sane or it will not work apparently, so not sure if this can be done at all.

I Hope

I'm sick and tired of the stupid Lexmark Software, so annoyed that I can't disable the auto-startup and its unpredictable behavior, that I logged in as an admin and uninstalled it with RevoUninstaller. Predictably (strangely enough) it left behind the whole program in ProgramFiles. Blum

OCR will complement

now that there is work being done on TOPocr it would greatly complement this program (Xsane).

Sorry, Mir

Sorry, but I don't think I can do XSane.
The requirements are IN-sane: the program has to be placed in C:\sane (how many limited users actually have access to the root of the C drive?), and the drivers just make this worse.

I'll try, but I can't promise anything more than that.

EDIT: whew, this really is bad. From the readme:

This is a WIN32 network scanning version of xsane.
You need to run a SANE server e.g. running on a linux machine.

To run xsane-win32:
- make sure this directory is placed in c:\sane
- edit c:\sane\etc\sane.d\net.conf to configure
sane-network server
- the executable is c:\sane\bin\xsane.exe

Does anybody have a SANE server I can borrow while I'm working on this? I sure don't, so right now XSane is just dropping out with a "Cannot detect devices" message.

This could either be a really, really fun challenge or a really, really hard one that's going to make me wish I'd stayed away. Maybe both.

sane

you have to make a sane server. see my links. xsane is nothing more than a GUI frontend for the SANE server.

Oh, man.

Well, thanks for the clarification.

Looks like you've got a good handle on the app details already, so let me quickly confirm what I think: SANE is the backend, doing all the heavy work, and XSane is just its frontend?

Serious doubts

I have really serious doubts about this. Just got an e-mail back from the author:

I did not compile xsane-win32 since several years now. I had to do a lot
by hand to be able to compile it for windows. So you should not expect
that it is a simple configure/make/make install.

Please note that running xsane-win32 with full sane-backends (included
drivers) does almost not work. So may be it is not what you are looking
for.

Best regards
Oliver

"running xsane-win32 with full sane-backends (included drivers) does almost not work" - and portable apps don't mix well with drivers from the getgo.

Anybody feel like offering some advice?

I'm still going to try

I'm still going to try it, I've just been insanely busy in the past few weeks.
I just can't promise anything, given the author's comments.

Gimp is not a scanner

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program ) is a image manipulation program. it cannot take a physical document and scan it into a PDF with OCR capability. it also cannot take a physical picture and make it digital.

it can use the TWAIN driver

it can use the TWAIN driver from the computer and use that to scan a image.

if so.

it only scans into a picture format. no OCR, no PDF no txt. Also it requires you to have a driver. if Xsane where made portable it would have the ability to use almost any of the scanners it can portably. for example i have a Mac version of the Fujistu ScanSnap Color Duplexing OCR scanner. There are no Windows Twain drivers or even a driver in general for it. Though once SANE is installed i can use it using the frontend of Xsane.

Now this scanner is somewhat portable and is also not a cheap peice of equipment. it sells used for 200+ USD and the latest iteration is around 600USD.

Also i have never gotten Gimp to scan. this is my experience on Windows and Linux.
