PChat Portable 1.0.3 Perl Quick Test

Application: PChat
Category: Internet
Description: PChat is free fork of XChat for windows, has all the same features as xchat but minus the shareware components usually found in the official XChat distribution for Windows.
Settings are automatically saved to Data\Settings (also supports custom icons in App\PChat\icons and also plugins can be added at App\PChat\Plugins)

Please Note: This is a quick function test to see if I finally eliminated the 2 tray icons issue before going back to release. And also install it as a new install.

Download PChat Portable 1.0.3 Perl Quick Test 1 [19.1MB download / 98.3MB installed]
(MD5: 5e2a6b5b44e63fa5a3fa7361e81b3937)

This is just a quick test of PChat with the included Perl runtime binary (strawberry perl package) and the perl plugin for using perl scripts in PChat. Please test it for stability and report bugs as they happen so that we can fix them and proceed for stable release.

Still not working for me

I installed this over my existing installation, but it still shows 2 tray icons with the PChat icon crashing the app when I click on it.

(Using Windows Vista 32bit)

EDIT: I deleted my previous installation and reinstalled from scratch and the second icon has now gone. Good work Smile

the bubbles are in xtray not

the bubbles are in xtray not PChat, PChat has no control over the settings of xtray, if you want to change the settings right click the PChat xTray icon and choose settings

Looking good

Looking pretty good; there are two minor things I wanted to mention, though.

* The "Show tray icon" checkbox is unchecked by default, but you might want to remove it entirely given the problems the 2nd tray icon can cause.
* What happened to spell check? The "spell check" checkbox seems to have vanished.

Other than that, everything looks great (Windows XP Pro SP3)!

Congratulations on the soon-to-be official release! Biggrin

Spell check didn't work and

Spell check didn't work and the option doesn't show because if USE_LIBSEXY isn't defined then that's why it's not showing.
the gtk tray on the other hand is tricky, there are no real options to remove it, just only disable it the way I have done it. the only way I could remove it completely is if I completely rewrote that part.

Resource Hack?

Want me to resource hack it out for now?

BTW - This should be 1.0.3 since 1.0.2 was already put out with issues.

1.0.3 will be the final

1.0.3 will be the final release (as I'm going to add support for freenodes ircd-seven commands via a patch they offered for XChat users that compile their own release) and iirc reshacking a gtk application doesn't work properly but might be worth a try.

Adding?

If you're adding additional patches, you will have to do another public test after you do. I'd like to just get a 1.0.3 out today with just the current fix. No need to be over-ambitious.

on second thought, let's save

on second thought, let's save the patch for different release, I'll recompile with the version # changed and send you the pchat binary, you'll have to decompress the exe file though since my compiler upx's it

Ok

Once I get it and give it a quick once-over, I can release it.

Thanks for the explanation

Thanks for the explanation about spell check; I seem to recall it working for me, but no matter.

I wasn't talking about entirely removing the tray icon; I meant removing the checkbox for the tray icon to prevent confusion.
Even a Checkbox.Hide call (however that's expressed in your programming language) would probably be better than showing that checkbox, IMHO.

Looking forward to the final!

This.

I think removing that checkbox with some comments for now would be the quickest and easiest thing to do to prevent thing from occurring later on.

Another Test

Hey Zach, why don't you incorporate that into 1.0.3 and post another pre-release. We'll do the release of PChat Portable on Monday or Tuesday since it'll get MUCH more attention than it would over the weekend anyway. Whaddya think?

Linux version?

Is there a Linux version of PChat? (And no, I don't want to run under Wine - I have reasons)

Been using PChat for some time now, and it's working great - keep up the great work! Biggrin

I found this, but it looks like an older build. I was looking for a current build, but I'll be happy with an older one if the latest can't be done for some reason.

OK, thanks!
No particular hurry, I was just looking ahead a month or two, as I'm likely to be doing more stuff with Linux at that point.
