RapidTyping [Launcher]

Program: Rapid Typing Tutor

License: Freeware

Description: Learn how to use your keyboard in a fun and entertaining way for absolutely free. Rapid Typing Tutor is designed to teach adults and kids to use their computer keyboard more efficiently than ever. Learning to type is fun with the typing game included with Rapid Typing Tutor, while its extensive training statistics and customized lessons are rarely seen in the much more expensive products.

Website: http://www.rapidtyping.com/

Other: There is a portable version which has all the features and add-ons work with. A launcher would be great.

+1 here

I just want to second this request. As the OP has stated, the program works fairly well as a stand-alone "portable" version they offer from their website. But it's not in PA.c format... Personally, I don't see it as a big issue is it PA.c format or not, but I still think that it would be a nice addition to (for now) very limited selection of educational apps. Since there are several links on the page linked in the OP, this is the one that points directly to the Rapid Typing Tutor (freeware):

http://www.rapidtyping.com/typing-tutor.html

I hope someone picks this up and makes it into PA.c format. It should be as easy as making the NirSoft launchers, since it has all the native portability...

Cheers Smile

I'll do it.

No one seems interested in Stickies so I'll give this one a whirl.

Settings

Does anyone have any idea where it stores it's settings? I can't find them ANYWHERE. I noticed in an options pannel you could redirect the settings directory. However the problem is it's not an editable file so I have no way of changing the drive letter...

Not sure where they are but

Not sure where they are but seems the portable version handles drive letter changes by itself. Just checked between two different drive letters and settings/progress was carried over Smile

Serves me right to first read another posts before re-checking this one, adding tags and posting... You beat my posting by 20 minutes (!) Blum Smile lol

Maybe

I noticed it creates a subfolder named "User". Maybe the settings are stored in there, but none of the three files (with extensions .PLA, .STA and .OPT) are in plaintext... So I can't check what's inside.

The folders and files which appeared after running RapidTyping:

1) .\User

inside it were 3 files:
current_RapidTyping_user_ID.pla,
current_RapidTyping_user_ID.sta and
current_RapidTyping_user_ID.opt, where current_RapidTyping_user_ID stands for a random number provided from the program to the user of RT. Please note that the program refers to it as "User", I just gave it this name so it reflects it's purpose more accurately...

2) .\Lessons\localLanguage\En\User (this one is empty for now)

3) .\rapidtyping.ini (stores that current_RapidTyping_user_ID)

So my guess is these are the folders (and files) you need to change the paths into the Data folder of RapidTypingPortable.

On another note, I don't think it needs any drive-letter changing help, since it works well wherever you put it. I think that the program looks for it's settings relatively to the RapidTyping.exe. I'm glad you took interest in this project, and I'm looking forward to testing it! Smile If you need any help, info, beta-testers, just post here. Smile

Cheers

All RapidTyping's settings

All RapidTyping's settings files are in UTF-16 LE format (unicode).
If you use XYplorerFree it's easy enough to look through them.

To update any drive-letter within these settings files you can use the NewTextReplace plug-in.

Use it in combination with ReplaceInFileWithTextReplace.nsh, like this:

...
!include NewTextReplace.nsh ;https://portableapps.com/node/21840
!include ReplaceInFileWithTextReplace.nsh
...
Section "Main"
...
${ReplaceInFileUTF16LECS} "$SETTINGSDIRECTORY\User\[settingsfile]" $0 $1
...
SectionEnd

There is some documentation include, but if you have additional questions, let me know.

Ps.: It's a PITA, the way it saves the userID as settings filesnames, but good luck.

LOL!

LOL! I came into work a couple weeks ago to find RapidTyping was installed. The policy is that we aren't to install anything (hence why I use PortableApps) but I guess it isn't enforced.

I gave the program a shot, but it wasn't that good... it just wanted me to type various combinations of Z, ` (backwards apostrophe located to the left of 1), and backslash. Why would I ever do that in real life? I dunno. I guess I didn't give the program much of a chance, but typing random letters doesn't help anyone. Aspiring programmers perhaps? Maybe that was just the lesson the person was on.

Good luck with making it portable though, speed typing software is usually good stuff. Though I don't think any of it could really help me; at my level I either just need to type more (LOL!) or get a blank Das Keyboard.

Here and there and everywhere :) (don't ask....)

... it just wanted me to type various combinations of Z, ` (backwards apostrophe located to the left of 1), and backslash.

That was just a lesson that person was on. The lessons are constantly changing, in the beginning first 4 letters, then the second, third..... Z is a bit further out, but it's not even close to the first third of the lessons. Latter on, there are words and real texts for practice. These first lessons are just to make you get used to what finger works on which letters..

Anyway, it's a nice piece of software... Let's you know where you stand with your typing speed (I skipped directly to words and stuff, and tried my "luck"). Smile

Cheers Smile
