zero size downloads

when i click the link to download any of the versions of rkill from http://www.technibble.com/rkill-repair-of-the-week/ i get a zero size file in the target folder.
the links at technibble download from bleepingcomputer.
the FF download manager gives the message: canceled--bleepingcomputer.com.
other downloads give similar results.
the downloads work fine in opera 10.10.
i have been using FFportable for a long time and never had trouble until recently. i can't think of anything that i have changed recently.
i made a 2nd profile with no add-ons, same result.

xp pro sp3; FF 3.5.8

I get:

I get:
The page you requested is no longer here [error 404]

from the link you provided.

Perhaps you meant:
http://www.technibble.com/rkill-repair-tool-of-the-week/

Tested one download from there in FFP, worked fine,
355KB, I did not run the file.

I'm not willing to wager on

I'm not willing to wager on this, but I think the VT results are false positives. At least one (McAfee-GW-Edition) is a heuristics result, probably because rkill is packed with UPX.

It's possible your system has a virus that's preventing you from downloading tools - like rkill - that are generally used for taking out malware.
Try downloading MalwareBytes Anti-Malware on a different computer; burn it to a CD, then run it (from the CD) on your affected computer. See what happens - you might be surprised.

Database version: 3510
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702

I was thinking about the

I was thinking about the possibility of some Firefox-specific malware, perhaps a hidden addon. Does the problem persist with a clean install of Firefox 3.6 portable?

First, make sure you're using

First, make sure you're using a clean Firefox 3.6 Portable - earlier versions of Firefox let addons hide, which could be used for malware. Also, don't just get a new profile - get a completely new installation of Firefox 3.6 Portable in a different folder.
Then, please list all the addons & plugins you have (even though it's a clean install, there should be some of each - Firefox Portable uses plugins and globally-installed addons from the host PC).

well i tried using FF to download 3.6 and IT WORKED! so i tried downloading rkill again and it worked. i don't know what changed unless just running MBAM fixed something even though it didn't find any bad guys. so for now the problem has gone away.
thanks for the help.

Glad it's working for

Glad it's working for you!
Since MBAM didn't find anything, I doubt it fixed anything; I'm not sure why downloads would start working again, but I'm not about to start complaining. Wink

Cheers!

ah ha! my problem with zero size files in FireFox downloads has been explained, but not fixed, yet. Steve Gibson's latest 'security now' podcast says it is caused by locking down the internet zone in IE. he has not yet identified the cause of the interaction, but expects to figure it out by next week's podcast.
