TurboRisk (Freeware game)

Program: TurboRisk

License: Freeware (since PortableApps is allowing freeware now)

Quote from the website: TurboRisk is really 100% free: no limitations, no time-outs, no nags, no adware, no banner ads and no spyware. It can be freely used and distributed provided that neither code nor documentation are altered in any way.

Description: TurboRisk plays the classic "World Domination Risk" game, where you are battling to conquer the world.

Website: http://www.marioferrari.org/freeware/turborisk/turborisk.html

Other: from the website: TurboRisk doesn't install any DLL or OCX or any other component in your Windows folders. It doesn't use the registry, except to register its Uninstall program.

Using that as a clue, I'm guessing some registry entries will end up in the following:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

I had a quick look at it, the game seems to be fairly portable.

But the installer is not extractable by the 7-zip plug-in, so an online installer is going to be an issue !

Universal Extractor says it's

Universal Extractor says it's in Inno Setup format, but that it's "corrupted" so it couldn't be extracted. Weird.

Isn't the rule for packaging freeware programs into the installer you need the author's permission? If that's true, someone should email the author. His email is at the bottom of all his webpages. Judging by his site, I think he'd give someone permission to repackage the app into a PortableApps installer. I'd send an email myself, but I don't know what kind of permission we're looking for on freeware.

It's likely UniExtract

It's likely UniExtract doesn't have the latest version of Inno to work with; updating the Inno binary(ies?) would probably fix the problem. I'm not particularly sure how to do that, though.

Judging by the looks of things, it's going to have to be a bundled-files installer. That could be hard to get permission for, unless he decides to host it himself; I doubt he'll want his download count siphoned off to a separate site.

I just now installed the game

I just now installed the game and this is in the license screen for the program's installer:

You have the permission to use this version of the program freely, provided that you agree that the Author has no warranty obligations or liability resulting from the use or misuse of TurboRisk and its companion software TRComp and TRMap.

You can also freely distribute it, provided that neither code nor documentation are altered in any way.

That looks like "permission" to repackage it to me. Smile

After installing the game, as

After installing the game, as the author warned and I predicted, there were registry entries here:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\TurboRisk_is1]
"Inno Setup: Setup Version"="5.3.6 (u)"
"Inno Setup: App Path"="D:\\Program Files\\TurboRisk_2_0"
"InstallLocation"="D:\\Program Files\\TurboRisk_2_0\\"
"Inno Setup: Icon Group"="TurboRisk"
"Inno Setup: User"="Buddha"
"Inno Setup: Setup Type"="full"
"Inno Setup: Selected Components"="main,extramaps,trmap,trcomp"
"Inno Setup: Deselected Components"=""
"Inno Setup: Selected Tasks"="desktopicon,desktopicon\\common"
"Inno Setup: Deselected Tasks"="desktopicon\\user"
"DisplayName"="TurboRisk 2.0"
"DisplayIcon"="D:\\Program Files\\TurboRisk_2_0\\turborisk.exe"
"UninstallString"="\"D:\\Program Files\\TurboRisk_2_0\\unins000.exe\""
"QuietUninstallString"="\"D:\\Program Files\\TurboRisk_2_0\\unins000.exe\" /SILENT"
"NoModify"=dword:00000001
"NoRepair"=dword:00000001
"InstallDate"="20100308"
"EstimatedSize"=dword:00006751

I haven't run the game yet and don't have RegShot handy so if someone wants to take this app on, they'll have to do that work. If this app gets repackaged, all the reg entries above aren't needed for the program to run so who knows, maybe the author is right and nothing more gets written to the registry. We'll have to see where any options/settings get saved to...

Those are just standard

Those are just standard uninstallation entries; since the PAF build will bypass the installer, those won't be created.
If the game doesn't save its settings in the Registry, you're already >50% of the way there.

Uhhh...I know that, that's

Uhhh...I know that, that's why I posted the info. The author mentioned it, I guessed where they'd be (not hard), and they were there.

I'm not 50% of the way anywhere since I'm not creating the PortableApp version of this program. Those days for me are over. If someone does take this app on and create a package for it, I might help test it.

I'll take it

I'll take it on; doesn't look like a long job, and I want to give PAL another workout.
Expect some delay, though, as I already have a to-do list as long as my arm.

Very cool, no pressure to get

Very cool, no pressure to get it done. Smile

I found the app the other day then searched the forum for the name and didn't find it so requested it myself. I used to play the old Milton Bradley version of Risk waaaay back in the day. I think the AI on the Milton Bradley version was a lot more dumb because I just played a game and got smoked. Sad
