Toucan didn't sync a file with little changes

I am using Toucan 2.2.1 with Win XP
for testing I made a few changes in an excel-file and restored it two minutes later. Obviously Toucan didn't recognise these changes and didn't update the file in the destination folder. None of the functions (update, mirror, equilise) works.
Is there a minimum amount of changes that must be taken?

Any

changes should cause it to be flagged as it looks at the actual contents of the file itself, can you make some sort of minimal set of steps to reproduce this so I can try and fix it? Thanks in advance!

Simliar issue

I stopped using Toucan to sync a while back because of the same issue. I have a small excel (2007) spreadsheet which I update daily with a few numbers. I was backing the file daily and noticed that often it did not catch the change and flag the file as changed. The numbers are small and probably total only about 50 count. This happened when the spreadsheet was excel 2003 as well. It's a small file, but I use it daily and it is important to me to have synchronized on my USB drive.

I too have wondered what the minimum change would be to have Toucan miss the change.

Just so you know that he wasn't the only one who had that same issue. It is sure a neat program though and I like the features.

Raleigh

safe removal

Try USB device safe removal (rightclick the icon at the tray) before unplugging your usb drive.

Always do.

..that's not the problem. Its that Toucan does not see small differences in files, resulting in failure to sync.

Hello Steve, 1. I created a

Hello Steve,
1. I created a new Excel-File on my PC and synchronised it with my USB-Stick. So, the same file was on the PC and on the stick.
2. Now I changed the file on the PC (I deleted a line) and restored the file
3. I tried to synchronise the files. Toucan didn't detect the difference and didn't update the file on the stick.

I will send you two mails with the files to your email-adress. The mails also include screenshots of the properties of the files. I was astonished because of the older File (File 1).
On the screenshot of file 2 you will see the time of creation (23:04) and the time of change (23:08). Both is accurate. But on the screenshot of the older file (file 1) the time of creation is 23:07 (this cannot be) and the time of change is 23:04 (accurate).

I hope you will have good ideas for the problem.

Best Regards

Georg

Why is it a zip archive? You should know people want .tar.gz for Linux!

.xls is the issue?

When I got my new Dell machine a few months ago, I set up the included Dell DataSafe Online backup system. It will back up any changed files to a passworded area on a remote server.

I know there's other services that do this. This was available free, so it was an easy way to configure some files/folders to save every week automatically.

Guess what.... I've got a handful of .xls spreadsheets that don't get backed up even though there's changes to them. When I discovered this, I remembered this thread, and decided to post this info.

I don't know what's wrong with detecting changes in .xls files. Since this system also doesn't see the updates, it isn't just Toucan and it has to be something in the format or file structure.

Since I do script a daily Toucan backup of these .xls files to my hard drive, I think I'll add the .7z backups to the Dell DataSafe list. Maybe that will take care of the problem.
