Are all apps required to be open source?

Please pardon my lack of understanding here. I have developed an app (not Open Source) in a non- portable version, and have created a version in the lab for portable use. I believe I can get it to subscribe to all the PortableApps format requirements, but it wasn't clear to me whether or not the app itself needs to be Open Source.

Can someone please clarify what the Open Source requirement is that would allow my application to become part of the PortableApps community.

Thank you.

No.

The app does not HAVE to be open source. PortableApps.com now lists freeware applications as well. As long as you follow the specification and go through the proper steps, then you should have no problems getting your software listed on the site.

Welcome to PortableApps.com!!

Does Freeware include Trial Ware?

Thank you for your quick response. Just to make sure I have no BIG misunderstandings before putting effort into the app; my applications normally downloads as 30-day trial ware - fully functioning for 30 days.

Would this be accepted into the PortableApps community?

Thank you for your help.

No, PortableApps doesn't

No, PortableApps doesn't include trialware.

If you've got a freeware version of your app, with a payware version with more capabilities, that would probably be accepted; Foxit PDF Reader is done that way, and it's in the official app list.

Just for further clarification

Is there anything to stop a developer independently packaging their application in the PortableApps format, regardless of licence? Naturally, under certain circumstances it wouldn't be listed here but I'm just curious.

I personally would have little-to-no interest in a payware/trial portable application, but that's just my opinion.

Yes

AFAIK, nobody can use the PortableApps.com branding/trademarks unless their app is on full PAF compliance (with exception to the Dev Tests and Pre-Releases). Anyone can package it in the PAF format though.
