Automatic update causes loss and corruption of files on the flash usb drive

I have this problem: I have installed on my kingstone 1Gb USB flashdrive the following portable app: portable open office, clamwin, firefox, thunderbird, gaim, 7-zip, VLC, all portable and downloaded from portableapps.com. All of them were running fine until the time thunderbird asked for a update from the Internet. After that the update was downloaded and I restarted the program. A window opened up and tell about the progress of update. This happened in two time with the same result: data loss and corruption of all my data on the flash drive:

First time: the update was sucessful but I lost all my e-mails and data from openoffice

Second time: the update was taking too long to finish and I stop it by task manager. Them I lost all my e-mail, corrupted all my personal data and couldn´t run any of the other programs on the flash drive. Now I´m installing all that stuff again and asking what to do to avoid this problem? I tried to uncheck the option on update but the program did not aloud.

Disconnect?

Updates on some flash drives take a VERY long time due to slow flash ram and controller chips. On the order of 5 to 10 minutes for many drives. If you eject or kill TB before that point, it can cause corruption on the drive or corruption of your TB profile. Also, since an update places lots of write stress on your drive... if your drive is starting to die, this is when problems will show up... even if it works ok just using the apps and copying files.

Copy locally

Copy it locally and update it... if that works, it's an issue with your drive (or the PC you're connected to... I've seen hardware issues on USB ports before). Be sure to backup often (Portable Apps Backup makes it really easy). And consider getting a new drive.

John, perhaps you should add

John, perhaps you should add autoupdate info to "Upgrading" on the support pages for TBP and FxP, explaining that autoupdate can be done, but that it can be slow and must not be interrupted.

Vintage!
