I am very interested in the concept of Portable OpenOffice.org for my math lectures. Portable OpenOffice.org Math is not displaying symbols properly when I go to insert the Math object into a document or presentation. For example, in the place of parentheses I would get two weird looking characters. When I go to look at the symbol table, a lot of the symbols are missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It needs the font installed on the local machine. There is currently no way around this. So the math component of OO.o isn't very useful portably.

Thank you for your fast reply and I applogize that my question was related to another question in the forum. Do you know what font needs to be installed locally for the equation editor to work? Or is it that OpenOffice.org needs to be installed locally. Sorry about my confusion.
Thanks,
Mark
There is an OpenOffice.org-specific font called OpenSymbol that is installed when you install the Math component on a machine. This can't be included with the Portable version as OO.o won't actually use it unless it is installed and registered on the host PC (which is unfortunate).

I have managed to get Portable OpenOffice.org Math to work without a local copy of OpenSymbol font installed and registered on the host computer.
I created a directory called fonts in the following share directory:
\PortableOpenOffice\openoffice\share
Within the fonts directory - create a directory called truetypes
Your path should now look as follows:
\PortableOpenOffice\openoffice\share\fonts\truetypes
In this directory I copied the OpenSymbol font: opens___.ttf
I retrieved the \fonts\truetypes\opens___.ttf from my local installation of OpenOffice.org on my Ubuntu Linux box.
And now I have Math in full operation on my my USB drive.
Thanks John for such a great portableapp!
It's cool you worked that out.
->John, It might be handy to add that to the package.
I already discussed it with Mark offline. I'm going to do some cross-platform tests and include it in Portable OO.o 2.0.2.

Thanks for the instructions on the fonts, mholson. However it did not work with my computer. I am running OOo and Portable OOo in PC with Windows 2000. In windows version there was no font folder in OOo folder. But I found opens___.ttf from windows own font folder. So I copied opens___.ttf from there to the folder \PortableOpenOffice\openoffice\share\fonts\truetypes. But, it did not work...
Does anyone have managed to get this work on windows also?
Is there any decisions or information on when can we expect to have Portable OOo 2.0.2 (with fully working math symbols)?
Thanks for the GREAT product!
Olli
Try changing the name of the folder from truetypes to truetype. By doing that, the math symbols worked for me.
Thanks rickh57, you are right. The folders name is truetype and not truetypes, my spelling mistake.
Thanks to Ollihoo for discoving and rickh57 for resolving the font problem as a result of my spelling mistake. Please note the following changes that need to be made to the directory paths that I mentioned above.
The proper directory path is:
\PortableOpenOffice\openoffice\share\fonts\truetype
**notice it is truetype and not truetypes**
and NOT the following directory path:
\PortableOpenOffice\openoffice\share\fonts\truetypes
Sorry about any confusion that might have been caused by my spelling inaccuracies.
Yep! Now it works and I could not be more happy!
If anyone is looking for the Open___.ttf font, I have posted a download link on my googol site (http://600901.com) along with the quick fix instructions provided on this post.

Interesting. Could this be used to make TTF fonts "portable" for OOo?
More importantly for me, could Type 1 (PostScript) fonts be made portable?

I am running Ooo 2.0.latest and the .tff file is not working for me
Dude i put all my TTF files on both the E:\programas\openoffice.org\App\openoffice\share\fonts\truetype and E:\programas\openoffice.org\Data\settings\user\fonts\truetype folders.
However, OO.org v2.0.3 is _not_ loading the fonts.
Any ideas?

Did you try copying fonts into folders like that with a local OO install? I'm thinking there may be a regression in OO itself where it doesn't work with those font directories anymore as of the 2.0.3 release. There's no reason for it to stop working with the new portable release unless OO itself is having issues.

I have a locally installed copy of OpenOffice.org, v2.0.3. It is the standart OpenOffice install, not the portable, and as such gets its fonts directly from the system folders. How can a replication in the regular OO what i did in the portable version make my portable work elsewhere?
In other news, apparently 2.0.4 will come with a Firefox-like extension system. Maybe you, or some contributor for portableapps.com, write an extension for the portable version to load locally installed fonts (as in the pendrive).

Try a new font, something you don't have locally. And place it in the local OO folder the same way it would be in the OO Portable folder.

I haven't tried OO for maths symbols yet but i have used and will probably continue to do so a package called Texaide. (I found this easier to use than the equation editor in StarOffice, WordPro and Word).
