Google Chrome Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Actually I haven't done any work on it since a couple releases ago >_>;;

John did this himself. Blum

Wow, this one was very fast! Thank you for your effort on this project!

I recommend anyone who is a fan of Chrome to check out 4.1. Some nice new features including built-in translation of web pages and NoScript-like functionality (although it's "lite"er).

but then they added add-ons and now I'm a super-fan (or whatever you call it) of chrome!

Also... How many downloads have you had of Chrome portable?

From the Chrome menus you can chose the "Create Application Shortcut" is that safe?

Or will it start Chrome outside of the launcher and screw everything up?

Chris Morgan's picture

These will create shortcuts to the Chrome executable, not the Google Chrome Portable executable. Thus they will not be portable shortcuts. (You can do the same thing by running GoogleChromePortable.exe --app=http://example.com.)

I like Chromium buildbot.

Will there be a version that only installs the launcher and let me download Chromium files manually?
You know, UFD can't afford too much Writes.

And for the "Create shortcut", although it links directly to the executable, it also include the profile arg. Just like:

F:\PortableApps\ChromiumPortable\App\Chrome-bin\chrome.exe --user-data-dir="F:\PortableApps\ChromiumPortable\Data\profile" --app="http://www.gmail.com/"

GoogleChrome downloaded and installed fine. I click on the Google Chrome Portable link on the PortableApps menu, it starts, shows a few (old?) pages: PortableApps.com, Chrome themes, and a Welcome to Chrome page. Within a few seconds, it closes.
Oh well, back to Firefox....

The app itself has to support it (as Firefox partially does, though it is not recommended to use it on any PC but your own due to side effects). Google Chrome has no such support. It's designed to be installed much deeper into the OS than Firefox is. Firefox is a more truly independent app (and why its updater works portably while Chome's will not).

I found the GoogleChromePortable.ini file. No sign of an AllowMultipleInstances option. So not sure what value such a line might have? "true"? "1"? "yes"?
Bigger question: Allow multiple instances of what? AFAIK, I just have the one instance of Chrome running (or at least trying to).

"The app itself has to support it ... Google Chrome has no such support..." So, don't really expect Chrome to run as a portable app?

John T. Haller's picture

Read the post above mine: "Please give AllowMultipleInstances option in GoogleChromePortable.ini"

Chrome doesn't support multiple instances. Firefox does. So that option is available in the Firefox Portable launcher, not the Chrome launcher... because it isn't supported.

you dont need multiple instances support to run something as a portable app. Its just needed if you want to run 2 at a time.

So create a bug report in the forums detailing your issue (install location, OS, how you ran it, errors, if Google Chrome runs locally, etc). Here, you're commenting on a news story (which will get lost and you won't get help) and replying to an unrelated question (Multiple Instance support).

...strange--I have no problem running multiple instances. Granted, I've only started them up for testing and done minimal testing at that (so, not exactly conclusive regarding any possible problems down the road), but I encountered no problems in doing so. I do notice, though, that only the first GoogleChromePortable.exe (launcher) stays running (which is expected actually). And if you're running a native/typical Chrome install (not portable), then that one has to be started first ('cause it'll see the portable instance running and not start). Even so, interesting more than useful.

Hi Guys,

I ran Chrome portable on the above system and got just a screen trying to open portables page & hourglass forever.
I can create another tab and type in different url - the same effect
After some timeout or switching pages getting a message that page has to be killed ???
Fox portable works fine at the same time

Currently I don't want to install non-portable Chrome on win7 x64

Anybody experienced the similar effect?

Thanks in advance

Anybody got an answer to this post?

I have just installed java portable but I don't know how to get chrome to use it?

If I want to import my extensions, password, whatever things in my local computer to the portable chrome, can I simply copy my own profile and overwrite the E:\Portable Apps\GoogleChromePortable\Data\profile ?

I tried one but seems doesn't work, nothing has been imported

This isn't possible, and Google's unlikely to help with making it possible. The Google updater is a separate piece of software, tied into the operating system more, and designed to work only with locally installed and registered software. We can't do anything about it. If you search around the forums you'll find this has been asked about several times and a similar response given.

Hey. Check this out.
[link to illegal software removed by mod JTH. That site has stolen our own software/code and packages warez with it.]
It's packed with portableapps.com format. While installing, it leaves with a blank which allows you to enter the latest version number of google chrome dev, stable or beta. It would retrieve the url and download the chrome setup, extract it, and make it portable. Quite powerful. But I wonder if it can automatically update everytime chrome starts. Hope you guys enjoy.
PS. You can get the latest chrome version number here http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/

There is an updater. It's built into the PortableApps.com Platform 2.0 Beta 5 release and it will automatically keep the Stable, Beta and Dev versions up to date for you.
