Time to say "goodbye"

Well, it's finally happened. A couple of life's weird quirks have come at the same time, and in a fashion that will keep me off PortableApps (and possibly offline) for anywhere from a month to nearly two years.

I'd like to say thanks to all the PortableApps members; it's been a real blast working & talking with you guys, and I'll always smile when I remember some of our best moments together.

Rather than having people unsuccessfully try contacting me if the apps I've done get outdated, I give anybody and everybody permission to take any of my apps over until I get back. I'm not leaving for good, and I have no intention of totally dropping development on any of the apps I've done; I'm just going MIA for what could be a long, long time.

I've dropped KidSafe 0.29.0.0 Dev Test 1, which fixes the last known bug. Hopefully the bug tracker will stay empty while I'm gone; if it gets anything in it, I'll fix it when I get back. Please keep testing!
John, the math DB is in KidSafe now; it should be totally abuse-proof at this point. Hopefully when I get back, if the bug tracker's still empty, we can reach for pre-release.
Extra-special thanks to agdurrette, ve4jhj, rcmaehl, and weatherkid for all the time & effort they've invested in KidSafe; you guys really rock.

John, you've truly got a wonderful thing going on here. PortableApps is the way of the future, and everybody knows it. I can't begin to imagine what PortableApps will be like by the time I get back, but I know it'll be great. Keep up the wonderful job!

Well, I've said about everything I was going to. It's been a joy being with you all, and I'm looking forward to working with you guys again once I get back.

Cheers!

You'll be missed

I've grown used to seeing your name up here. Won't be the same. Be well. Smile

...Two years, though? What's that about?

Take care...

I hope all will be well and sorted out for you soon! Smile

Even though we hadn't had much "talk", those few chatting sessions we had, either intentionally or unintentionally, pointed me to some really great and useful stuff I learned, and will benefit me for a foreseeable future. I thank you for that Smile

See you later Smile (as much as one can "see" someone on the internet Blum )

My posts are old and likely no longer relevant.

Hope your immediate future works out as you want it to, and you can find your way back to PortableApps soon.

Wow, I really appreciate the

Wow, I really appreciate the support! I had no idea this would happen; I was basically expecting an empty thread. You guys have no idea what this means to me. Smile

I'm back for about a week, on a very limited basis; basically, I'll be handling my own apps & threads, and that'll be about it. Sorry I can't handle everything I was doing before, but I'm still very busy.

Now for the gory details, since Nathan asked & I'm sure the rest of you are wondering.
Lately, my school load has gotten fairly significantly heavier, since the semester's starting to wrap up. At around the same time the load began growing, I did a fairly significant deal with a certain company; I promised to alpha-test & beta-test their flagship (commercial) app in exchange for being allowed to upgrade my years-behind copy without needing to pay the large upgrade fee. Obviously, that's something I can't drop under any circumstances as I'm essentially working to pay for my upgrade. Eventually, the load (school work + PortableApps forums + REAL Software forums + portabilizing apps + working on my own programming projects + community service at the local library + beta testing a commercial app + IRC) just got to be too much.

Thanks to my week-long spring break, I'll be able to return on a limited basis; however, I'm still very swamped and won't be able to do nearly what I'd been doing. I'll also have to leave again in about a week, when my spring break ends.
I do have one more minor app done (WorldClock, for those interested); I still need to get the author's permission before posting. Other than that, I'm going to essentially focus on "holding my own" until the semester ends.
The possible two years absence was the worst-case scenario for not being able to return; there were possible complications that would have kept me off PortableApps and all similar sites for that long. Fortunately, I think I've gotten past the worst of those without taking too much damage.
