How I install LATEST flash?

When I download the flash from the link given on this website, it's a very old flash, from 2009.

Where and how do I install the very latest flash for firefox?

Atm, I have Flash version 10,0,32,18, but the latest is 10.0.45.2.

Cheers.

I think the question is how to get tha leates flash version for Firefox PORTABLE. And thats not something you can download at adobe.com.
Does anyone know if the flash installer from here downloads the latest version or an older one?

EDIT: I just used the installer from here and it installed flash version 10.0.32.18 but tha latest is 10.0.45.2.

delete od

you might better delete all old flash files and then copy/paste only the latest once into the profile/plugins folder.

On one install of FFP I had also same number given by that page, thought it looked like some arbitrary number to me, but when I deleted all flash files and inserted only the latest files, the test website shown now the correct version too.

when all cleaned, the remainig flash files would be:

Flash10e.ocx
flasplayer.xpt
Flashutil10e.exe
NPSWF32.dll
NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe

note the version 10e, the e means the current version, if you have 10a or 10b or what ever in the plugin folder as well, it may get confused.

they might be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash

You said, "you might better

You said, "you might better delete all old flash files and then copy/paste only the latest once into the profile/plugins folder"

How exactly? Latest flash files where? Where you get it and how did you extract the latest flash files? And where did you copy them to?

ok its simple

since flash is kind of things which are not exactly portable meant by authors, the method used here was always to make local install and then copy it to the portable profile.
Now, the place where adobe installs the files was not always the same, earlier I remamber it was all placed directly to the plugin folder. But the more recent versions are copied to C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash.
You dont need to extract the files, they are present in their working form.
You just go to www.adobe.com, click there on flash player and the dialog will guide you to the download.
OK, this is all on XP, but on other windows you will find similar path to the files. If in doubt, just search for them on your system.

So it was in general so, we have to let the adobe install it locally and then copy the files from there to the portable under x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins

As I said, remove old versions from there, I made experience that sometimes when more then one is present, the things mix up somehow. In the local install, adobe takes care of it, tries to remove earlier versions prior installing the new once.

The copying takes place by copy/paste operation, you know, right mouse click...and so on Wink The files are supplied by adobe, but today it will also install some kind of downloader made by adobe. You can delete this one later.

To test if your install works, you can simply uninstall the local version of the flash and you will see that your portable will still be using it, but the local FF not.
You can also just check in addons, plugins, there will be the version displayed.

You can sure use the instruction on the support page too, but the copy /paste way there is more relevant to older flash versions, since they have been placed only in the plugin folder and not in C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash.

You can also use the extension way to install flash as described on the support page. https://portableapps.com/support/firefox_portable, but this one does not work on some installations, I have no idea why. But you can also look at mozilla site for possible newer version of that extension.

about:plugins

You need to figure out which flash files you are using, then go from there.

Go into about:config and set plugin.expose_full_path to "true"

Then go into about:plugins

It will tell you the exact paths and versions. If you have other paths and versions that you've been trying to make "active", perhaps the old ones are stepping in first. Eliminate those, and then the others will have a chance.

oh thanks for info

it is always nice to have the correct and professional way for doing things, I did it just the 'try and use common sense' way and found out at some point, that things get mixed up when collection of versions is present.

You're welcome

I found that Firefox itself (and FirefoxPortable) is pretty flexible in the exact plugin folder structure used. I suspect that the code looks for the plugin files from the current relative path on down, but the order in which that happens is the source of the problems.

Why can't portableapps

Why can't portableapps include the latest flash plugin?

I still have not found a workable, manageable and easy solution.

Anyone figured this out yet how to get latest flash version in firefox 3.6.2?

Illegal

Because it's illegal to. And any site currently doing it is violating Adobe's copyrights and EULA.

Just install locally and copy it to the portable directory as directed in the support page. Nice and easy and you're done.

It looks like Adobe dropped support for the old install method (which my live installer was doing) and now forces Firefox users to use their Adobe Downloader plugin. I'll rework it sometime soon to pull from the other install method.

John, I installed the latest

John, I installed the latest flash on my C: drive but I cannot find the plugin folder on my C: drive so cannot find the files needed to copy across to my portableapps firefox plugins folder.

Where are they?

Because when I follow the instructions above to copy all files from C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash into x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins it don't work. And it still reports I only have Flash 10,0,32,18.

There have been a lot of people saying do this and do that, but not one single method has worked.

I tried every single method above, but still no good. I even deleted every single file in my x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins folder and dragged all the files from the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash into it, and yet it still shows the old Flash version 10,0,32,18.

So obviously everyone is telling me the wrong portableapps firefox folder to copy files across.

You say it's "easy" but it's not, and it don't work.

If it's so easy John, then you post a step by step guide how to get this working, because all the steps mentioned above DO NOT WORK!

Does anyone else know how to do this using a method that actually works? Because none of the methods above works.

When I run IE it reports the latest flash so I know I have latest flash installed on C:

And interestingly, when I tested something and deleted every file in x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins, flash still works and loads in portableapps firefox. So is that the wrong folder you all been telling me?

And when I deleted all files in x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins then Flash don't work anymore.

But when I copied all files from C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash into x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins it says flash not exist.

So conclusion.. are you all wrong in the folder you been telling me because it seems the proper folder is x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins NOT x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins.

And if so, what files exactly should go into x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins ?

Help???? Anyone know what they are doing? Blum

SOLUTION WORKED OUT!

I worked this out for myself, found SOLUTION:

1. Delete everything inside x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins

2. Delete everything inside x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins.

3. Visit this website: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html

4. Click on missing flash player Icon

5. Install Flash via portableapps Firefox when prompted

6. Voila, latest flash installed and working.

strange

@truthseeker

BTW: what operating system? I have only xp or w2k to test, so paths might be different on vista or w7.

does not work on my side that way, installing number of times, no change, no flash in portable ff.

What does happen when you take the stick out and use it on PC where no flash is installed?
To which place did the files been copied to? In which folder exactly did you find the flash files now?

And what files were installed there?

have no vista

just xp, w2k, for testing it so far.

So if you uninstall the flash from the control panel, do you still have flash on the portable device?

Do you have any flash files under firefox\plugins on your stick?

yes it is

but as I tested what it does, it installs the flash to the local computer so this is nothing to do with portable then. You still have to copy the files to your stick to have them with you when using it on other computers where this install is not done.

Two Flashes

I think your confusion was the two flashes. IE Flash is not Firefox Flash and vice versa. The first is an ActiveX plugin that only works with IE. The latter is a browser plugin that works with everything else.

The files go into x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins You should delete any duplicate copies of the files in X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins

If you have flash installed in Firefox locally, you'll find them in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins (or Program Files (x86) on 64-bit Windows)

If you have flash installed in Opera locally, you'll find them in C:\Program Files\Opera\program\plugins (or Program Files (x86) on 64-bit Windows)

The files you are concerned with are npswf32.dll and flashplayer.xpt

Shortly, it won't matter, as I've nearly completed the new installer that will run without admin rights and download the newer version from Adobe's servers.

That must be a new feature as this always used to either fail or leave traces behind on the local PC. Did you check for that?

new experiments

I found , that installing the latest version of flash to local ff, does nothing to firefox\plugins, if this is empty, it will remain empty.

The whole install goes to system32\mcromed\flash.

This did it also when I run the installation from the portable ff, the 'getplus' downloader or what ever it is, does take care of it and places all into the system32.

This does then not work really portable clearly.

So tried to copy the files to
x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins

but for some reason, this did not work on my side. No flash on local at all, only the files copied from system32\macromed\flash.

Copied all therefore to:
x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins

Now all works fine, the test site report the current version of flash too.

Since I unistalled the local flash via unistall, the folder macromed somehow remained there but contains only some .inf script from microsoft and no adobe files at all.

So local now, IE, FF, and Opera, have no flash at all.

But portable ff has it.

Then as next, I deleted all the plugins from the portable folders, result, the test site say no flash installed.
OK, installed the flash this time from the portable ff as instructed by truthseeker.

Installation was ok, but portable ff reports on the test site still has no flash.

Checking folders of the local install. firefox\plugin is empty, all files are installed under system32\macromed\flash.
So installtion from the portable ff, does maximum lead to local installtion of the flash so far, no traces of flash on the stick itself.

Tried as next to copy the flash files to either:
x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins

or

x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins

does work equally well in both positions.

So as far as I can test all (xp or w2k) I can see, that while one can have the files under firefox\plugin, adobe itself are not using this folder any more apparently and any install is going now to the system32\macromed\flash. And this even when the install is started from the portable version. This might show then as valid installation probably in some cases, but is not portable. The only way to make it portable is copy it by hand to the stick in either plugin folder. Only then it works on PC with no flash installed.

all tested with 362 firefox so far, not diged deep in registry or similar, cleraly, when installing from the portable ff directly from the website, things will be noted in the registry all over the place.
This might be also why this can 'work', but only on the current PC.

there will be many

but for example, there will be some download tool with the name get-plus or so placed in application data under your user, there will be registry entries pointing to this downloader tool or what ever it is. Look in application data, mozilla, firefox, there you might find folders with the get plus parts in it.
Then you will find the files installed on the local pc, where in vista I am not sure, as I mentioned under xp it was in system32\macromed\flash. This may be different in vista, there are simply registry entries pointing to this place where ever it is.
Under addons/plugins you may have the entry get plus as plugin which will be present since it is installed or rather copied to application data and when ff is started, the portable ff will recognize it too.
Anyway , the installation from the portable ff will provide lot of entries which will not be portable and are left on the local system.

@ truthseeker, test

OK, I have now done exactly what you have done and thought it will install flash on your portable ff.
I first took a copy of clean XP, it has ff on it, but no exttentions or plugins were ever installed. (my VMware reference copy).
I did snapshot so I can revert to this state again.

Then I produced fresh stick with suite and ff on it and a copy of regshot only.

I did run the first regshot, then opened the portable ff and installed the flsh from the adobe site. This first installed the 'get-plus' plugin via an extension, the ff had to be restarted and then the flash was installed.

Then I took the other regshot.

Clearly, the browser indicated to have flash now, thought no traces of flash were on the stick.

Then I reverted to the original state of the xp machine (no flash on it) and as expected, also the firefox on the stick had no flash now.

Then copied NPSWF32.dll from other computer to the stick under
x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins and tested again and now the portable firefox has its flash in correct version. That is all. It will work also if the NPSWF32.dll is in x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins

If you check this dif from the regshot, you might find which changes were made to the local computer when installing the flash from the portable ff. You can also see , that the flash files are under system32\macromed\flash and that nothing of the flsh files was copied to the stick appart from the get-plus downloader installed by an extension from adobe. (the stick was drive E: during that procedure)

Therefore you can see, that what ever you thought you installed, was a local installation of flash only, if you take your stick with you and use it on other computer, you have no flash again.
To have flash on your stick so you can use it also on other computers, you have to copy the NPSWF32.dll of the current version to your stick.

I would copy the NPSWF32.dll

I would copy the NPSWF32.dll of the current version to my USB stick, but I cannot find NPSWF32.dll anywhere on my entire C: drive. SO how you figure?

press Ctrl+F search for it.

press Ctrl+F
search for it. Of course, it only works if you have a local copy of firefox with flash installed.

Pressing press Ctrl+F on

Pressing press Ctrl+F on Vista does nothing for me, not a thing. What's it supposed to do? Open up a search box or something?

SO HOW on Earth do I get this

SO HOW on Earth do I get this to work in portableapps firefox?

Dragging those files into the portableapps firefox plugin folder and then removing the files from system32\macromed\flash, means my portableapps firefox no longer works with flash.

HELP????

Is John finished the installer yet?

so lets start again

Since you disturbed your local windows by trying to install flash from the portable firefox instead doing as advised on the support page to do it from the local version of firefox(!!) then do now step by step:

1.
search on your local computer installation for the file NPSWF32.dll

This can be done in many ways, but the windows own search function will be the best.

2.
you will probably find those files in

C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash

3.
copy (when I mean copy, I mean something like right click and choose copy) the file

NPSWF32.dll

4.
now navigate to your usb stick and find the folder

x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins

or

x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins

in fact both will work, so you can take the first one and paste the file NPSWF32.dll into this folder. (rihgt click, paste)

From now on your portable firefox has the latest flash installed and is ready for use on any computer.

5.
to test if all did work, go to control panel of your windows , select software, and search for flash. Unistall flash from the control panel by clicking on the unistall button next to the flash symbol.

Now your local firefox will have no flash , you can check it by selecting in firefox Extras/Addons and look under plugins, no flash in there.

6.
close the local firefox and open portable firefox.
Under Extras/Addons and plugins you will see entry Shockwave Flash 10.0.45.2

you an now visit some site with flash content and it will work.
If it does not, then your portable firefox might be broken and you should install it over the existing version again.

-
Since you have 'installed' the flash by using the portable version of your firefox to your local system with all the registry entries, you can not simply delete the files in system32\macromed\flash, you have to unistall them.

The whole story is, that flash is simply not made to be portable by their authors adobe and the current installation of the downloader get-plus makes it even more complex.
In fact the get-plus downloader will not be unistalled by uninstalling the flash.
You might locate under extensions of your portable firefox the extension with contents something like gp-np. Since this is in the portable firefox, you can delete this extension and with that also this get-plus downloader will be gone after next start of firefox.

And BTW, yes after each change or installation of a plugin or extension, you have to restart firefox, but this should be normal practice, otherwise your plugin will anyway not work.

and when you need installer

it is here:

https://portableapps.com/node/15501

but for me it always worked by simply copy/paste the relevant files the same way.

Please read also notes on the page given, flash is not so portable in fact still.

otherwise use instruction on page:

but follow the instruction exactly, installing from your portable instance of firefox is mixing up half of the windows like you can see from the regshot I did on a clean xp system.

r45 chugs

I just upgraded from 10,0,32,18 to 10,0,45,2. Flash performance, especially on games, actually got worse. Games chugged along, movies took a while to load. Switched back to r32 and everything was back to normal.

Anyone else have issues with r45?

not issues

on my side so far, all seems to work, but adobe is probably prmanently changing this and that, just to make sure they can also sell their software to create all this fancy flash things.
Wanted use tinyurl.com service recently, and found that if any flash 10.x reader is used, some functions do not work any more there. From tyniurl website:

This TinyURL may have been copied to your clipboard. (This no longer works for those who have upgraded to Flash 10.) To paste it in a document, press and hold down the ctrl key (command key for Mac users) while pressing the V key, or choose the "paste" option from the edit menu.

This is getting too

This is getting too complicated for me.

Is John still releasing a flash installer?

That will solve all these difficult steps and make it so much easier.

John? Installer ready yet please?

installer

can be found here

https://portableapps.com/node/15501

but the installation of flash is simple copy-paste operation, not more not less. This was always so, since adobe flash is a non portable software by itself and is proprietary and not opensource. Thus it can not be modified to become really portable.

The only solution is :
locate the file NPSWF32.dll on your local installation, it will be in
c:\windows\system32\macromed\flash

you can use the search function of the windows explorer to locate this

you can also try the following:

https://portableapps.com/node/13737

right click with the mouse on it and choose copy

then using the normal windows explorer, go to

x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins

(where x menas the current drive letter of your usb stick, so replace it with the current drive letter, should your stick have drive letter E: for example, then you replace the Secret with E: etc.)

place your mouse pointer there, right click and choose paste

Done!

this is all you have to do, nothing less, nothing more, an installer will do the same.

If you have problems in finding your way in copying files from one location to other, it could be better you ask some local computer supporter where ever you live, he will fix it for you in minutes.
I doubt that someone here can give you much more support on that subject.

you can still try pyromaniacs flash player installer, but I am not sure if you dont get more confused here when launching the firefox later.

Firefox 3.6.3

There's plenty support on how to find the files:
-flashplayer.xpt
-NPSWF32.dll

Get them. Place them here:
X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins

Placing them here used to work up through FF 3.6.1 but doesn't work any more:
X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins

& this location is just there to throw us off:
X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\DefaultData\plugins

Works for me so I hope that helps!

if you dont have the files

you have no flash on your computer at all. If you have flash on your computer, then you have them. So at one point you said that the test website said that you have flash installed. So either you have flash installed, then those files are here, or the files are not here so you don't have flash installed at all. There is nothing between it, it is either true or false.

At one point you said you dragged those files to your stick, so if you had no any files, what did you drag then? You said you dragged them that means you did find them. So how can be this time you can not find them?

I think it would be better you would follow instructions step by step exactly, if you just try this and that on your own, you will never be able to install anything at all, but you might make your system completely mixed up, your registry will be full of entries confusing all additional tasks.

How did you search for the files?
Using the search function of windows?

Do you have system files hidden or did you enable them for seeing them? Default on windows is that they are hidden so you can not see them even they are present.
So all this would call for someone to set your basic windows so that you can work reasonably with it.

Do you have a local version of firefox installed?
This would be one of the first things needed.

Did you try to follow some of the links given to other advises etc?

This forum is trying to help everybody and you will get advise here, but then you would need to follow those advises closely. I still hope you are really seeking help and somehow trying to troll the forum here.

Listen very carefully. I

Listen very carefully. I have flash on my PC and IE8 even tells me I have the latest flash version. You are wrong, dead wrong.

Now back to my original request, has anyone written a flash installer for portablefirefox?

Your turn

Flash for Firefox, and Flash for IE are two totally separate programs.

They may perform the same visible function, of running swf files in a browser, but that is all they have in common.

The fact that IE tells you that flash is installed has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not a Firefox useable flash player is installed. i.e. none of the files that firefox needs are there.

While I can understand that you are frustrated by not being able to get Flash working in your Firefox Portable, you have now got to the point where you are being rude to people who are freely giving up their own time to try and assist you.

Your original question has been answered in the thread above, but, to save you the trouble of reading back, I'll repeat it.

There was a flash installer written, it used to work fine. Then the way Adobe packaged it up was changed by them, so it currently doesn't work. John Haller is actively working on an updated version, and no, it doesn't exist yet. Once it is complete, it will be announced on the site.

In the mean time, the people above have gone through the manual steps that you would need to take to install Flash. These instructions have worked for many, many people. The fact that they are not working for you means that something (probably something tiny) is going wrong in one of the steps.

@ truthseeker

as stated by Jimbo, who is our expert in writing understandable help texts by the way, IE8 and Firefox use completely different software to provide you with the flash functionality.

But earlier, you told us that you did run through the installation procedure on firefox. This procedure is done by adobe with the aid of an additional downloader software which will be installed on the local pc in addition to the flash. Therefore such installation can not be portable that way and adobe does not provide the files in simple zipfile or similar.
For the IE8, the installation process is done by active-x , for the firefox it is done by the downloader and installation is run from there.

So you have to read instruction word by word, and do it so, then you will succeed.

In fact you should have a local installation of firefox on your pc before you start. I might have ommited this in my text, but this is clearly stated on the support page for firefox portable so I assumed you did read that and I do not need to repeat it again.

With that firefox, you install the flash for firefox from the adobe site.

And from that step, you search for files, copy them, paste them into your portable firefox etc. Exactly as stated above.
Thereafter you are free to uninstall flash and firefox local installation if you wish.

But as you stated earlier, you did the flash install from the adobe site by firefox, so you should have the original adobe files on your pc if it was trues that you installed it.

And in the case that you did not read the instruction on the support page, here I copy at least the last part of it:

1. Install the plugin in a local copy of Firefox (on your hard drive)
2. Locate your plugins directory (usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\)
3. Copy the plugin you need from there to your FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins directory (Some Exmaples: For Flash, copy NPSWF32.dll... for Shockwave, copy np32dsw.dll)

Whereby, here you were number of time told that the current version of adobe flash will not be under \Mozilla\Firefox\plugins, but under \windows\system32\macromed\flash, this was meant as correction to the cited instruction above.
So pease read, this again and again and again until you are sure to be able to do it step by step (it is only 3 steps here) exactly. Or did you complete thje step 1 at any time at all?

Notes: It should be noted that Adobe Flash does *not* officially support running in any portable configuration. And, as it is a closed source application, we can neither modify it nor package it into a more portable-friendly installer. It should also be noted that it is illegal to redistribute either flash or shockwave without the full installer.

Ok thanks everyone for your comments.

This is just too complicated for my little brain, so I realise that John Haller is actively working on an updated version for flash on firefox, so I will patiently wait for that to be released.

Cheers.

even with installer

the first step

1. Install the plugin in a local copy of Firefox (on your hard drive)

would be needed, since the adobe downloader has to be installed first with the current version, you will have to do it anyway as simple download and unpack does not work any more with the current version.

Thread Locked

Since you guys have covered the exact same thing six times in a row now without resolution, I will be locking this thread if there are no objections. The constant circular suggestions are getting old.

The flash installer will be done when it is done.
