I'm using openoffice portable from my USB stick on different computers. The drive doesn't get the same drive letter. So how could I make "My documents" point to a relative path instead of an absolut path
Also it would be nice to have other standard definitions relative instead of absolute. Finally (If all the above finds a solution ;-)) it would be nice if "recent documents" also be relative paths to the root of the USB drive
First let me say hi and welcome you here
What do you mean by "My documents" point to a relative path?
I think the Open Office Launcher will update your drive letter so your recent files list should always point to the one on your drive.
The Documents folder that comes with the platform can not be made relative because afaik everything needs to have an absolute path.

Thanks for the welcome.
by " My documents" I mean tools/option/path. I'm aware that the menu interface doesn't give you the opportunity to the change the path into a relative path. What I was looking for was perhaps a "hack" of some kind that behind the surface could change the path.
In regard to recent document, the documents are mentioned with the drive letters they were saved with, and doesn't change accoridng to the actual drive letter of the USB stick
... if You'll use the Document folder of the Suite.
So it will change the letter to the right one.
Only if You don't use the folder of the suite or if You change the folder over Tools this automic will be broken.
If You want to use another path You have to change the entry in the file path.xcu in Your user profile.
Please don't ask where it is or what entry, its not supported. If You want to change the default (using this 'hack') You have to find it out by Yourself

Hi, first of all thank you for your work and sorry for my english
I have just a question: how you know Windows assign different letters on different PCs to the same USB drive (pen/hdd other).
A lot of programs needs absolute path to applications to call external programs or other. To make an example, in my case, I use on my pen Filezilla and Notepad++. I setted Filezilla to use Notepad++ like default editor. If my USB Pen change the association is broken.
Now I solve this little problem by changing the Drive letter of the pen on windows, the first time I use it.
I don't know if the PortableApps platform support something like to check the drive letter at the start up and update the drive letter to all the configuration files or a sistem variable like %PortableAppNumber% (considering more istances of PortableApps at the sime time)...
Can you help me? Thank you for reading!
In this case this will be solved by the new launcher, because it will support absolut and relative path entries for all OpenOffice.org path values.
The handling of path entries or drive letter entries is a task for the Apps not for the suite, cause the App should work without the Suite too. If there are problems with configuration files and so on it should be solved by the App itself.

I was asking about how the PortableApps platform handle pathnames... if it does.
The problem is that, I think, it is a platform task: otherwise which one would be the difference between single stand-alone apps? Just a menu and a simpler way to install?
... I've asked
To make it clear: The platform handles the Drive Letter and the paths in order to perform the platform related tasks like install/uninstall backup/restore and offers the Folders for Documents, Pictures and so on. The platform is using paths relative to the installation folder of the Suite, so You'll have no issues with the suite if the drive letter of the device is changing. The new 2.x Platform release will offer some more environment variables like PortableApps.comDocuments.
A portable App is able to use this environment variable for special tasks.
But, and that is fundamental, every (good) portable App is responsible for all paths an path related tasks! Why? Because this App have to work without the Platform (stand alone, with a modified Platform, another Suite). If an App is using environment variables of a Suite (as it OpenOffice.org Portable will do for the Documents path) this can only an aditional feature.

Sorry, I found this discussion searching in the forum and from the original title I did not understand that it was related to OO.o...
Thank you for your information about the 2.x Platform, I'll ask in the right (I hope) section.
Have a nice time
