Disk partitioning and management software

Is there a chance of getting a portable disk partitioning or disk management app? There is a simple free program called SwissKnife from CompuApps, not sure how easy it might be to make it portable though. There are probably other apps out there too. Would this be not possible due to administration rights being necessary? Thanks dudes! You're the best!

not very useful

any partitioning software is not very useful when done as portable apps under windows. No partitioning software will be able to do all operations under running windows , reboot will be needed sooner or later since changes on system partitions can be done only when the actual system (windows) is not running yet. (incl the swissknife software)
Therefore partitioning software is much better to be used from bootable media.

You can use parted magic, they have files to create boot CD or boot usb stick if your bios supports it.

I would've recommended GParted, but that seems to be GParted plus some other utilities.

It is possible to partition and format non-system drives while Windows is running, but it requires admin rights. If you only need to do basic things, Windows' built-in disk management will suffice. Otherwise, I would recommend using Parted Magic or GParted. If you have admin rights, but you can't boot from external media, you might as well just install the program unless you need to use the program on many PCs.

With that said, I do think there should be some type of portable partition software for those who deal with a lot of machines and don't have the option of booting from external media.

yes but this is impossible

since there is no way one can do all manipulations without running special operating system instance before the actual operating system is run. So how ever you twist it, if you can not install such subsystem and boot to it, you can not partition. Simple as that. So why to have portable partitioning software which can only make changes to non system partition? For that you have fine tool in every windows.

So if such tool is portable, it definitely must use boot media. If it should not use external boot media, but the internal boot media e.g the local hard disk, then the partitioning has to take place before the actual operating system is loaded. So such partitioning task need to be done under some temporary operating system, then this system to be unloaded and the real system (e.g windows) started. In such case this system has to be present on the hard disk before any other operating system will start.

Note that standard practice for partitioning software is to replace temporary the partition type number in the partition table by a number that is normally not even recognized by the normal operating systems as valid partition. At the end of the operation, which can take just seconds, the 'dummy' partition type number is again replaced by the correct one, so the operating system can recognize it as valid partition.

SwissKnife portable

Doing a quick check on google seems to indicate SwissKnife already existing as a portable app.

Don't really want to post the links in case there is trouble, but maybe you can check there.
