The Java Portable needs really a lot of time to install to usb drive.
On the other hand updates to Sun JRE (also security updates) appear relative
often. Any way to do these updates in a shorter time?

It's just BIG, and has lots of small files that need to be written to the drive, and that takes time.

You can install it to a faster, local disk (it sounds like most local disks will probably be faster), and then delete the Common Files\Java directory on the portable device and replace it with the new one. This might be a bit faster.
I usually install new PortableApps similarly (just keep in mind this isn't supported, I just know what I'm doing ;)), since I run many of them through UPX before copying them over anyway.

Java_Portable_6_Update_14.paf
since also the java installer from sun itself is just a kind of live installer.
The file you can download from sun is just few hundred kb long and it then later downloads the parts from sun server during the installation. So also here the control in the hands of the installer and not the the download manager.
I tried to download the java otherwise, but have no clue where from.

There is an offline Java installer which you can download instead of the online one. This means you can use a download manager to get the entire installer (about 16 MB for Version 6 Update 17) and then run it from your hard disk. The offline installer is available on the same page as the smaller on-line installer.

Is it legal to update first the stationary JRE installation,
then to replace with its copy the JRE Portable?
Question addresses two situations
1. New JRE minor version appeared
2. New JRE major version appeared
but you know people wanted all have automatic, so this is probably why the life installer was created. But I do it still by copy/paste from the local version as we used to do it before the life installer was created.
can not really see what is illegal on it. Remember there was the earlier java installer which did basically copy the java from your system drive to your stick.
