[Closed] uTorrent 2.0 is NOT a portable application

Hi to all,
this message to inform that uTorrent is NOT a portable application.
Please update the site about it, thanks.

The problem is the following:
when creating a new torrent job using uTorrentPortable from usb stick, on a PC, it is not possible to run the job in another usb stick or PC, then.
In fact, when plugging the usb stick on another PC, the torrent job is invalidated.
The only workaround is to delete the job and create a new one for this PC.
Everybody who is not new to the torrent technology knows how this is painful..
So uTorrentPortable is absolutely depending on the single PC.

I tried to rise the problem on uTorrent forum, requesting to update the code accordingly.
The answer was pretty impolite.. they said this is a "stupid" request, if I want a fully portable uTorrent I have to BUY a special uTorrent version on eBay...

There is another P2P/uTorrent application, actually already FULLY portable.
Its named BitSpirit, to which in fact I switched.
Its Portable Team choice to contact them if the case.
Greetings

I can not reproduce this...

Although the only way I did test this, was to change the drive letter of the usb-stick. So, after downloading a part of a file and restarting uTorrent Portable on a different drive-letter(on the same PC), the torrent file just went ahead with downloading. The torrent job stays valid!!!

BTW: it is not supported to change the path to uTorrent Portable, as uTorrent Portable isn't fully supporting relative paths !
Only the drive-letter is allowed to change !

This would have nothing to do

This would have nothing to do with uTorrent itself anyway. Portability in this case depends on our packages (though if it's portable out-of-the-box, then it makes our jobs easier).

Re:

Gringoloco,
you reproduced it pretty well I see :))
In your case you just found a different workaround than me, which is possibly similar to deleting the job as I did.
You changed drive letter, I dont know how you did it.. you must be a programmer from uTorrent team..? Wink
In any case:
- I dont think you can call "portable" an application which needs workarounds to word.. mostly if the workaround impact the logic itself of "portability", dont you think?
- I dont think it is comfortable for anyone to change the drive letter every time change PC, where is the portability then?
- I dont think it is fair to call "stupid" a change request and suggest to BUY a different product on eBay, where is the shareware logic then? The internet freedom so much talked by ANY P2P client?

Then for scriptdaemon,
if as you said "Portability in this case depends on our packages", than I ask you:
- Would you accept an application in PortableApps if it installs correctly "out-of-the-box", but then it doesnt work or work partially as it was not made to work independently from PCs?
- How would you behave if not only me would complain about it? I just "honestly" informed you about that limitation, to update the program description, so other users would know it in advance.
- I informed you about another application I found named BitSpirit, which works already well, so it could be PortableApps Team decision to contact them.

Is it all clear?
Greetings

You mis understand me...

I just changed the drive-letter of my usb-stick within 'Computer Management', as I don't have an additional PC around to try and re-produce the problem ! (for WindowsXP it's: 'Start Menu' + right-click 'My Computer' + left-click 'Manage'. Then go to 'Disk Management', and you can right-click to change the drive-letter of your usb-stick).
This should mimic the change of PC.

Some thing what could help you, is to delete the current 'Data\settings' folder, so you have a fresh start with the original portable settings. And yes, you do have to re-start your jobs again but it should be the last time.

I really do not believe that this is a problem with the PortableApps Launcher, as you are the first one to report this problem for uTorrentPortable 2.0 !!

I don't think you understand

I don't think you understand how PA.c packages work. We take an application (whether it installs to the registry, a settings directory in the user folder, the application's install directory, etc.), and save the settings in such a way that they can be used on other computers.

My first post was a response to the fact that it was likely a bug in uTorrent Portable's launcher (although Gringoloco was unable to reproduce), and not uTorrent itself. The whole point of PA.c is to make non-portable apps portable.

Not necessary, I'm quite sure

Not necessary to repost this, I'm quite sure Gringoloco and scriptdaemon know all of this.

So, was your problem related to a path change or not? Even if not, people here might still be able to help you getting it to work.

EDIT: Could a Mod please move this post as an answer to https://portableapps.com/node/23240#comment-146981 , I accidently posted as new comment instead of a reply. thx

Re:

Hi to all,
it looks like this discussion is heading nowhere... Blum
So about BitSpirit, yes, I can confirm as for my tests it is perfectly working independently from the PC.
If PA team thiks its not the case to create a new PA application, all right, no problem Smile
As for uTorrent, Im going to be honest, it made me sick to make it work every time with workarounds on usb, thats why I decided to look around for another client... I found BitSpirit and it looks working very well... I can squeeze the network much more than with uTorrent, behind firewall/routers/tunneles I could reach the incredible speed of 116 Kbyte per sec... !!!! :))) I dont know how they did it, but I really dont care as long as it work.. with no workarounds :)) Greetings

You don't seem to understand

You don't seem to understand what we're trying to tell you. Have you tried deleting the settings like Gringoloco said? If the problem still occurs, it's a problem with the uTorrent Portable launcher, not uTorrent itself (in which case can be fixed on PA.c's end). If you would simply like to request another app, then there is a forum for that (to which I've noticed you posted).
