Attempting to install an extension just results in trying to download a .crx file, which is otherwise not recognised.
When I first installed Portable Chrome, I also installed a number of extensions, which it handled in the same smooth, integrated way as 'regular' Chrome. Then, sometime later, I tried to install another and all it did was try to download a crx file which is otherwise not recognised. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
It first started when I tried to install a theme, since then neither extensions nor themes have installed (instead just prompting where to save the .crx). Coincidence or cause?
Anyone know what the issue is, and/or how to work around it?
Specifics: running Portable Chrome 4.1.249.1036 on an SD card. Windows XP. Let me know if you need any further details.

I am having the same issue. I am running off of my work PC. Windows XP.
I've been using Google Chrome Portable (4.1) at Uni, and installing extensions has worked fine for me. I haven't tried themes but they should work just as well. I presume you're getting them from the main Chrome extensions source, not from other websites that might not be sending the right headers or whatever?

That's correct. I'm browsing the extensions gallery. When I click the install button the downloads bar pops up really quickly then goes away. Nothing else happens after that. My downloads folder has the crx files from the extensions I'm trying to install (AdBlock, Dictionary, etc.)
I think you have to enable extensions in the ini. Unfortunately, this is a guess that is probably horrible out of date.

I did try enabling extensions using the --enable-extensions parameter arguement without avail.
I didn't do anything like that and it all worked for me. The only customisation I've done is PortablePasswords=true.

Still can't figure it out. I setup a clean install on another PC and installed a few extensions just fine. I zipped up the folder and move it to my work laptop. Extensions and themes still won't install. Bizzare.
You're supposed to install this to a device at a given path (X:\PortableApps\ChromePortable is the preferred, supported path) and then move that between PCs so the drive letter changes but the RELATIVE PATH DOESN'T. If the relative path changes, your extensions will break.

Actually the launcher should fix theme paths. Extensions don't have paths stored anywhere AFAIK.

Err, not really. I'm not installing GCP to a portable device, I'm installing it on my work PC that I don't want to globally install anything (I'm not allowed to attach removable devices, btw). As a test, I zipped up a known working installation on my home PC (w/ extensions) and moved it to my work PC. The extensions that were installed prior to moving worked, but installing new ones did not.
The same rule applies then. If you install it to C:\PortableApps\GoogleChromePortable and then zip it up, you should extract it to C:\PortableApps\GoogleChromePortable at the destination PC (or D:\PortableApps\GoogleChromePortable). You should not zip it up and then extract to C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\GoogleChromePortable at the destination PC.

Reran the test per your specifications. Installing new extensions still doesn't work.
Did you start with a fresh install that was never moved around between relative paths? If not, try that. If that does fail, then could you try a fresh install on the affected PC and make sure that you can install extensions on that PC to a brand new copy? If so, try moving that home and installing new ones. If not, something on that PC is blocking something.

I will at some point test running GCP on a computer that does NOT have a local Chrome installed, that could cause the weird problem you're having, possibly, if it is what I think it is.
Anyone else try installing extensions when running GCP on a system that has never had Chrome installed locally?

I have never used my Google Chrome Portable on a computer with Google Chrome installed. I have three or four extensions, they all work fine. (I haven't tried themes, I could test them back at Monash Uni on Tuesday if you like.)

Not sure if that will bare fruit or not. I'd like to add that I am behind a corporate proxy.
Themes work fine, my home computer has no local chrome and themes aren't a issue.
