Well...
Love and use Portable Firefox.
Managed to install Gears on to it so I can use offline GMail :oD
However- it seems to want to download EVERYTHING swamping my 2gb drive with 7gb of e-mail (which of course doesn't fit) where upon Firefox fails to load and crashes due to lack of space!
Anyone got an idea as to whether this is a case I need to tweak the local settings manually somewhere?

I'd wager it's a setting within Gmail itself that works with Gears. I don't normally use either Gmail and I've never used Gears so I can't say specifically. But hunt in the Gmail settings.

Mr Haller is exactly right. In the 'Offline' settings page in GMail, you can choose how much mail to download for each label and also whether to download attachments or not.
I already have those set to just two weeks and yet it still tries to download everything.
Hmm maybe if I set it on a local copy and then transfer across.
