Java (and general maintenance of this application)

Hi folks,

I was trying to find out about the need for a local JRE to run this application and got a bit irritated that the support page says "up to version 2.4.1 has built-in support for using Sun Java" and we are now at v 3.2

Also the change log ends with an entry from 2008, although it is my impression that with all the other applications which are officially part of the suite the turn-over-policy is something like 24hours.

Hm, sorry for being so sceptical.

And...the reason for my forum visit: do I need a local JRE or can I still use the portable one (and will this be accessible for all other applications on my computer as well - all sorts of software seems to need JRE in these days).

Thanks for reading

have a good remaining Sunday

Peter

Just Install It

You don't need Java *AT ALL* to run OpenOffice.org Portable, you just lose some functionality (database functionality, some wizards) that many users don't need.

If you install both OpenOffice.org Portable and Java Portable to the correct locations (generally X:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable and X:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\Java) they will automatically work together and enable that additional functionality. No local install of Java is needed.

The changelogs were discontinued about 2 years ago. I should strip the old ones from those pages.

will the JRE be accessible for the entire system

Hi John,

Thanks for your instant reply. I will do as you suggested and install the portable Java. What I was wondering though is whether that portable JRE, since it is in the PA-folder (mind you I run PAs on a desktop computer, not a pen drive) can be accessed by other non-portable applications on my machine. I don´t know if these softwares expect JRE to be in %root%\XY or so.

On a different note: I read somewhere about your 24-turn-around policy. Does this only apply to the suite-apps, because JRE is at update 20 on sun.com and on 19 as PA. No offence, I think it is impressive how fast you and your team distribute the apps, I was just curious.

Thanks again,

Peter

PA Only

The Java Portable is used by portable software only. We're starting to repackage Java apps in PA.c Format that will automatically use it as well. Most of the most popular Java apps should be done in the coming months.

The 24 hour turnaround policy applies to our featured apps like Firefox and Thunderbird. We strive to do other apps ASAP but are a bit behind the last 2 weeks as we are rolling out PA.c Format 2.0 which requires updates of all apps to properly work with our upcoming updater.

Java should be up later today or tomorrow morning. For future reference, there is usually a few day delay with Java as Sun will launch it on the main Java Dev site first and then take a few days to post it to the Java.com Main site. As our online installer depends on that download to exist, we have to wait for that to be posted.
