Google Chrome: Saving location changed Locally

I was using Google Chrome on my PC, when I noticed something strange. The folder browser's beginning save spot (I have it set to ask me where to save every time) was on my flashdrive.

I was using Google Chrome Portable earlier, and was saving to my flashdrive. After a little testing, I confirmed it. Google Chrome Portable was altering the default save selection.

Now keep in mind, this is only when you have the settings set to "ask me where to save every time", Google Chrome is asking you where to save anyway, and it resets itself everytime you restart your computer anyway, (Non portable version), so it's not really that bad a bug.

What I am running

-Google Chrome Portable 4.1.249.1036 stable
-Google Chrome 5.0.366.2 beta (locally installed)
-64 bit Windows 7

It may be noted that I am running Google Chrome portable from my desktop

Can't do anything about it

With the Windows folder chooser, the folder is saved between launches on a per-executable basis - based on the executable name or something like that. Thus in that minor thing a local and portable version may clash. We can't really do anything about it, it's not a "safe" area to fiddle with manually in the registry.

Ah well

As I said, it is a relatively minor thing. Just thought I'd bring it up.

Thanks!

I forget if I did anything

I forget if I did anything about the default download directory... I believe I am changing the drive to match GCP's drive but it's been awhile. Smile So that should still work portably if you want it.

But yeah Windows will remember the last location of an open/save dialog for you locally. Most apps don't bother to override this because it is annoying when saving lots of files at once to have to navigate to the same folder over and over each time from a preset location, when Windows can just remember the folder for you the first time and reshow it on every subsequent dialog.

It would be possible to retrieve this setting, but there's no guarantee it would be useful anyway (IE: a local computer folder). I'll put it on my ever-growing todo list anyway to look at later.

FYI if you set a default download location you can move a file out of it elsewhere easily enough by dragging from the download tray into the destination folder. Smile
