Jajuk Portable 1.9.5 Development Test 1

Jajuk 1.9.5 : Jajuk
Category:Music & Video
Description:

Jajuk is software that organizes and plays music. It is a full-featured application geared towards advanced users with large or scattered music collections. Using multiple perspectives, the software is designed to be intuitive and provide different visions of your collection.

IMHO this rivals all the others such as Realplayer, Mediaplayer and the likes

Development Test 1 (20010-19-04): Initial release

  • Thanks to gringoloco and Chris Morgan for all there help in discovering my typos.
  • This should run in a portable environment without any traces left behind. I would suggest if you want to carry your favorite tunes to transfer some to your PA device
  • Jajuk Portable 1.8.4Development Test 2 (20010-20-04):

  • Removed exe file.
  • Cleaned up files that were being left by the .exe file.
  • Cleaned up Temp files being left behind.
  • Changed location of the jajuk.bootstrap fron the localhost userprofile to the App/Data directory.
  • Made sure the rest of the Data files are kept within the program and not left on host computer.
  • Fixed Java so that if Portable Java is installed program will launch from it
    • Jajuk Portable 1.8.5Development Test 1 (20010-22-04):

    • Launcher compile with PortableApps Launcher Generator 2 Beta 4
    • Installer created with POrtableApps InstallerU 1.03
    • Finally believe I straightened out the leaving behind of folders in Localhost user diredtiories .jajuk
    • Changed location of the jajuk.bootstrap fron the localhost userprofile to the App/Data directory.
    • Made sure the rest of the Data files are kept within the program and not left on host computer.
    • Upgraded to latest stable release candidate 1.8.5
    • I have pre-configured this to work in a portable environment. You may change things in the preferences BUT if you change the default storage location I can not guarantee that it will remain portable and not leave traces on the host computer

Should I be concerned about the 2 Temp files? I think I could remove them in the launcher.ini file?

TEMP

There is cause for concern in the fact that C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temp\JajukPortableTemp\temp0.jar is remaining, and the hsperfdata_Compaq_Owner folder. I think it indicates that something's getting a handle to it, and so when the launcher goes to remove the contained temp directory it finds that it can't because something else is blocking it. (Maybe I should put /REBOOTOK for such situations to make sure it gets gotten rid of eventually, even if not at once.)

You could try running Process Explorer, and searching just before closing it and just after closing it for the handle - a search for JajukPortableTemp should do it. It's possible that the antimalware package is scanning it or something at the time. Other than that it might be a slight interoperability problem.

You won't be able to get rid of it with launcher.ini, it's already gotten rid of by the Launcher (that's the TEMP handling stuff)... unless something is still keeping a handle on it as I suspect is happening here.

Other than that it's clean. (You've given me a few more keys that I can add to the "ignore these" list in the Manual in topics/registry, thanks.)

I did not have the remove files

I did not implement the remove files in the launcher.ini Nor did I implement WaitforProgram.

In fact this is the launcher.ini

[Launch]
ProgramExecutable=jajukportable\jajuk.exe
;WorkingDirectory=%PAL:DataDir%
[Activate]
Java=find

[FilesMove]
settings\.jajuk_bootstrap=%USERPROFILE%

App\Jajuk

I reckon you should have App\Jajuk rather than App\jajukportable - what's in the App directory is Jajuk, not Jajuk Portable.

All the WaitForProgram stuff and TEMP handling stuff and so on is all turned on by default as it's normally wanted - if you don't want them, that's when you need the values (it's all in the Manual, things are marked with possible values and their defaults).

Also, Jajuk is a Java application, and requires Java: [Activate]:Java should be set to require. Also see if you can skip jajuk.exe - see the notes in the manual about dealing with Java applications (topics/java).

I see what your typo was now Wink

Note

The exe file was from the publisher not from me. I can change the program to launch from jar if that is what you want.

I will also change the App\Name

I will change java to require. Was hoping that by setting it to find it would hook the portable have if present

Was thinking about adding the following

[DirectoriesCleanupForce]
1=%USRPROFILE%\Local Settings\JajuPortableTemp

what you think?

[Activate]:Java=require has it look for the portable version first. It only uses a local version if there's no portable version. Mind you, because you're launching the executable it may or may not notice that you've set JAVA_HOME. Do take a look at the PAL manual page on Java, it contains useful notes.

The TEMP stuff is handled by the launcher. Putting in a [DirectoriesCleanupForce] will not help at all.

I read the manual

I have read the manual as I said I was only using what the original creator used. I will try to switch it to run the jar directly. As for the temp file, interestingly when I play music it appears, if I just go in and then shut down it does not.

Will try Program Executable=javaw.eze then commandline it to the jar and see what that does.

1/2 figured

I think I found the hook for the Temp Files issue. But I am brain dead and can not for the life of me remember how to pass the CommandLineArguments to launch a -jar file Sad And I can not find that in the manual

Process Explorer

Go through what I list in the manual for how to see what the executable does - looking in Process Explorer to see what the command line arguments are passed to Java, etc.

I did that Iwas just trying to remember the syntax

Chris I have done that I just do not remember the syntax ....seems like I ask stupid questions? Believe me I do not like asking for help nor do I do so immediately, I have labored many hours before I finally admit that I don't know something then I swallow my pride to ask for help. But I guess back to laboring'.

Edited response

Never Mind ,sheepishly looking stupid

I realize that some times my brain works differently than my eyes. %PAL:App% is VERY different than %PAL:AppDir%

Regshot Jajuk Portable Take 100

Ok I think I have fixed the Temp Folder issue, the Bootstrap Issue and default data issue. Before I package it and release it as an update can someone please re-affirm my belief that I have actually done all this? Regshot below:

Clean

That's a clean report, except possibly for the modified files:

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Cookies\index.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\IETldCache\index.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\index.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat

I presume with these that you were running Internet Explorer at the same time. If not, then you may have issues with it using the MSHTML control for something (I wouldn't expect that though, particularly not with a Java application).

Are you kidding??? I mean really - a developer saying that... ccc... Blum Oh, yea, you're running Linux... Blum Biggrin

Joking aside, these 4 files are as clean as a whistle. For the 1st, 3rd and 4th entry, I can vouch with my reputation, are clean (or at least just as clean as the *MUICache*, or ntuser.dat.log).

On the other hand, that second one I haven't seen around on any of the PCs I frequent!.. Although, it's probably just as harmless as these three are.

These 3 files I claim are clean, they are standard Windows entries, they are modified whenever something is installed on the system - even when apps from this website are installed, these 3 files are modified. Basically, it's very much like recently opened files. Although I don't vouch for the second entry, I'd say with pretty high confidence that it's just as clean, since it's called index.dat, and they are standard Windows (and Internet Explorer) databases/logs/whatever which store useless data about what was recently opened and similar.

For the answer on why it's stored, in this instance, only when the firewall is running, and not stored when the firewall is turned off, I can't provide you with a smart answer, although I could speculate...

Also, note that I took no look at the rest of the RegShot, only these entries caught my eyes in Chris's post. Hope Chris doesn't mind a little scolding Smile

The problem is that you're missing some of the details. The reason why these files are modified is because of activity in Internet Explorer. Thus there is a possibility that an application is using the MSHTML ActiveX control or something like that. I think it extremely unlikely though seeing as it's a Java application for starters, and also that there is nothing new in the cache, just that its index has been updated.

I took a look at the files

Other than them not showing up after disabling Vipre fire wall, I did some snooping, it may have something to do with either the availability of the program trying to connect to net to get the covers art or the fonts not sure which one, there is an option in the program to deny or turn off the net access maybe that would be a pr user choice? I really am trying to confirm to PA standards and feel that this is a good product, whatever I have to do to make it acceptable I will try my best to do.

Might be interesting to see some other regshots from other users? see if thia can be duplicated for the results?

No need to worry about it

As I said there's no need to worry about it. It won't be using MSHTML, it'll be OK. It's not going to be its fault at all.

Before the rest of the post, I still stand behind my previous claim that those 3 index.dat files are Ok (or as Ok as the MUICache). The forth one I don't know and I don't have anything like that appearing in mine.

Pre-posting edit: I've just seen that Chris said "As I said there's no need to worry about it. It won't be using MSHTML, it'll be OK. It's not going to be its fault at all." - so we both agree. Smile

Now, the "review".

Tested "Jajuk Portable 1.8.4, Development Test 2" on Win XP SP2, NO admin rights, NO Internet connection.
Results - leaves a bunch of data behind.

Details [1st run, NO admin rights, NO Internet connection]:
- "Development test" splash screen appeared.
- Process jawaw.exe tried to connect to the Internet and was denied access.
- The main window appeared.
- I went into Settings (Configuration), and set it not to access the Internet.
- Exited the first run.
List of files left:

%USERPROFILE%\.jajuk\cache
%USERPROFILE%\.jajuk\thumbs
%USERPROFILE%\.jajuk\exit_proof
%USERPROFILE%\.jajuk\jajuk.log

%USERPROFILE%\.jajuk\cache\internal\star3_16x16.png
%USERPROFILE%\.jajuk\cache\internal\star4_16x16.png

Details [2nd run, NO admin rights, NO Internet connection]:
- I manually deleted the %USERPROFILE%\.jajuk directory, and ran JajukPortable.exe
- "Development test" splash screen appeared.
- Process jawaw.exe tried to connect to the Internet and was denied access.
- The main window appeared.
- I went into Settings, and AGAIN set it not to access the Internet. Apparently, that setting was saved in the local %USERPROFILE%, and reset when I deleted the local leftovers.
- Exited the second run.
- LEFT THE LOCAL %USERPROFILE%, for the third run.

Details [3rd run, NO admin rights, NO Internet connection]:
- "Development test" splash screen appeared.
- Note: jawaw.exe didn't try to connect to the Internet this time. So the setting for Internet access must be in the %USERPROFILE%\.jajuk\ directory somewhere.
- Changed a few settings.
- Exited the 3rd run.

Note #1:
It is in the %USERPROFILE% directory, not the %APPDATA%. That is probably the reason why you missed it. That is in %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\username in Windows XP and C:\Users\username in Vista and above. Also, when doing a RegShot... Make a RegShot of a local install, but don't stop right after the installation. Instead, use the program a little, and then take the second shot. Then you see where/what files are created by a local install, so you know what needs to be backed-up/cleaned afterwords.

Note #2:
In no instance have the files index.dat been accessed or modified by Jajuk Portable on the tested machine. How you missed the %USERPROFILE% ones?

I hope this "review" helped. Take care Biggrin

I did move files, load songs etc...that is when the program wrote to the files previously discussed.

The other files were handled in the Data directory. When you went to preferences, then Advanced did you change the Jajuk configuration path? What was there? It should have just said Data. I purposely pre-configured it to send all the extra files that you mentioned to the AppData directory in a folder called .jajuk. My question to you is on the clean installwas there a folder named .jajuk in the data directory of the JajukPortable folder?

Also there should have been a file called jajuk.bootstrap? the the same directory/settings? If you open that file in Notepad or Notepad++ does it read like the following:?

#Mon Apr 19 02:39:14 EDT 2010
final=Data
test=\#Sun Apr 18 22\:32\:21 EDT 2010
Dates maybe different?

Quote the path

Just a note on style, your file would look much neater and conform to the INI styling convention like this. There is one significant change in it though, the quoting of the %PAL:AppDir%\Jajuk\bin\jajuk.jar file name. Test it to make sure that it works and also test it with spaces in the path.

[Launch]
ProgramExecutable=javaw.exe
CommandLineArguments=-client -Xms20M -Xmx512M -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=5 -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=10 -jar "%PAL:AppDir%\Jajuk\bin\jajuk.jar" -notest

[Activate]
Java=require

[FilesMove]
settings\.jajuk_bootstrap=%USERPROFILE%

(You should also probably remove the SplashTime; as noted in the manual it's preferred not to have a value there. And certainly not as long as 7.5 seconds, for anything obscuring the middle of my screen for that long I would definitely disable the splash screen or at least turn it down myself.)

I'm not sure how you've gone about specifying the path in .jajuk_bootstrap; there's also the option with it of a FileWriteN section if you need it to make sure that it's to the right directory.

Thanks

As discussed in IRC last night the program does take some time to load, I was afraid people would think it was not responding, also as discussed will be changing it to boot after splash as program can be used full screen. So will remove the time all together.

I was trying to not do a file move as in the program there is an option to save the .jajuk folder ( which is usually saved in the loaction he mentioned) to any other place. By pre-configuring it to Data it automatically saved it there for me. If you feel that this was not a wise move then I can certainly do it your way?

The bootstrap issue myself and gringo worked and added the file move and that took care of that. Basically all that file does is hold the configuration of the program-the place to store the .jajuk folder.

Ah

I couldn't remember whether it was you or someone else I'd discussed it with. (!)

By full screen I meant hiding the window chrome and all, and in particular changing the resolution. If it doesn't change the resolution you don't need the LaunchAppAfterSplash value. I think I was thinking you were working on a game or something.

There's nothing wrong with using DefaultData to get it doing things in the right spot, I'm just questioning whether it's entirely safe - can the user break it at all? If they can then it would be safer, if you can, to get it to write the value every time. What's the format of that file like?

It is actually a folder

it is actually an entire folder. To be honest I tried doing a move folder and every time I did I toasted my system. Lost all my personal desktop items including folders still can not find them. The problem 9is that if a user modifies the location of the save location whether it be mine or the default there will be no way to know where they move it to do a move file. So was hoping by defaulting it in the preference folder I would be set. The other issue is that the values of the files within the folder can change each time a user does something...now we are talking about a folder named .jajuk not the bootstrap file. The bootstrap file problem is resolved by the move file The Context of the bootstrap just defines where the data folder is located.

.

When you went to preferences, then Advanced did you change the Jajuk configuration path?

Of course not! Well, not at first, anyway. Read on...

What was there?

Configuration > Preferences > Advanced > Jajuk configuration path, always defaults to my %USERPROFILE% folder, no matter what I do and how many times I try to change it. I've tried with several different combinations to run it, both as a privileged user and as a guest, both with and without Internet access, both default location (X:\PortableApps\...) and a custom location (X:\Apps\...), and both on C:\ drive and E:\ drive. In short, I tried a lot variations!

When I start Jajuk for the first time, the "Quick start" window opens. The "OK" button is always grayed out, so every time I chose "Later". If in the "Quick start" window I go on "Advanced preferences", I see that the workspace is set to my %USERPROFILE% (the full path is written), but I can't change it. I can input a new path, but the "OK" button stays grayed out and I can't confirm the change. Also, if I change the path in the Configuration > Preferences > Advanced > Jajuk configuration path, it requires to restart Jajuk Portable, after which it again defaults to my user profile.

Also there should have been a file called jajuk.bootstrap?

No file in there containing anything remotely similar to jajuk.bootstrap. I've searched JajukPortable and later on the entire %USERPROFILE% (just in case) for files containing *boot* in the name. Search came out empty, at least for Jajuk related files. I've also searched your installer, and it doesn't contain such a file.

My question to you is on the clean installwas there a folder named .jajuk in the data directory of the JajukPortable folder?

On a clean install, there is nothing, absolutely nothing else in the X:\PortableApps\JajukPortable\Data folder except JajukPortableSettings.ini, containing only a line with it's own name in brackets and a line "LastDrive=". To be even more precise, on a clean install, if I don't run JajukPortable at all, the folder Data is completely empty! Not even that single file. After the first run, the JajukPortableSettings.ini file appears.

Disclaimer: I don't really care whether this is fixed or not. I just went in to see what the program was about after my previous posting here. After seeing what it was, it's not even on the list of my 500 most wanted applications (and I certainly don't have such a long list). Until there's a new version to test out, I will not install/run/test/whatever this program anymore, and I'm not giving promises for later either.

PS: I'm really tired now and it's taking me a lot of time to write a decent post. If you want to ask me something further, come to IRC.

Where did you install the file? Is it on a usb device?

Is it on a usb device? Id not is it on a local HD? if it is is it in a folder named PortableApps?

The only way this type of result you posted is if it is not installed in an appropriate manner in relation to PA Format

Must support other directories

You must support other directories - if that means that you've hard-coded \PortableApps\JajukPortable\Data\settings\.jajuk into .jajuk_bootstrap, you will need to start either moving the directory or using a [FileWriteN] section to update it.

What is the contents of the file .jajuk_bootstrap as you have it?

No

the file is written to the user directory on start up/ Then when shut down it is copied back to the Data/settings directory....I guess I am not making myself clear

#Mon Apr 19 02:39:14 EDT 2010
final=Data
test=\#Sun Apr 18 22\:32\:21 EDT 2010

The second line controls where the .jajuk folder is located. Usually this is Userprofile on host computer but by entering the preference setting with in the program a user can change it, which I did ahead of the user. It is now located in the %PAL:Data% folder so that all user config options remain there the folder contains (at least on my current copy contains 16 subfolders and a total of 65 config files) Now ultimately a user could in fact "break" it by just choosing a different folder to store the info in. but I am counting on people not doing that, There is absolutely no way to bullet proof this. So I guess I should just scrap this and give up.

Perhaps you might want to download it then install then take a look. It seems to me I am not giving you the answers you want and also that may be because you are seeing only parts and not the whole?

But the way this conversation is going I do not see that I will be able to meet the requirements of PA and keep the project going by making it 100% bulletproof.

I found the problem

Sad

Apparently when you package a PortableApp it does not allow you to put a data folder into the package. Hence the problem. All the work I did in creating the "fixes" never gets implement...back to square one I guess. The only way I see to rectify this is to incorporate the AppData directory then to move it back and forth during launches?

OK

I read your post re-read manual I see about DefaultData my question however is does the folder get moved back and forth or once it is sent to Data and it then it stays there?

DefaultData is usually used as a container for the default files to be placed within the Data directory. Generally, the launcher, when run, will check if there is a set of files within Data and, if not, will copy them from DefaultData.

Spo once copied the Data is then stored in the Data folder permanently?

Also I took your suggestions about modifying the launch.ini the only thing that did not work was the quotes. Quoted and javaw.exe failed to execute unquoted and all was good. I did a direct copy and paste from you message.

Yes

Some Apps need dome files to be in the settings folder on first run. The problem is that if we put them inside the /Data folder, they overwrite the users own data if its not a fresh install but an update. So that's where DefaultData come into play. The launcher checks if /Data is empty and if it is it copies everything from the /app/DefaultData folder to /Data. If /Data isn't empty because you have already used the App, the launcher will do nothing.

I hope its clearer now.

So

So if I setup the program to save things to the Data directory, then place that into the default data directory. When the program first launcher it will copy from Default directory over to the data directory, then upon subsequent launches it sees Data so doesn.t touch the default directory again?
I think that is correct?

Yes

thats correct.

You put in the /App/DefaultData folder whatever you want to see in the /Data folder:

Usually its
/App/DefaultData/settings/config.cfg
becomes
/Data/settings/config.cfg
on first run. On a subsequent run its already there so nothing gets copied.

Hi. You've done a great job Biggrin I just tested, and the issues from the first "bug-report" were dealt with. The "RegShot" I am posting below proves it.

Installation - works great with NO admin right and NO Internet connection.

First run - NO admin rights, NO Internet.
+ Splash screen shows for a shorter amount of time than previously.
o Process jawaw.exe tried to connect to the Internet and was denied access.
o The main window appeared.
- Configuration > Preferences > ... - I set it not to fetch Covers from the Internet, and NOT to access Internet globally (it says something like that). So NO accessing the net for any reason!
o Changed a few settings, one of them was not to show up in the System tray.
o Exited the program

"RegShot" (it's pretty much clean, btw):

Issue #1:
Now... Congratulations about the biggest issue being fixed. However, there is still an issue of jawaw.exe trying to connect to the Internet even after I turned it off in all of the Internet related settings. As I checked later on, all the settings were left as I changed them, but jawaw.exe still tried the connection. I don't know what to make of it. Can you try for yourself? See if you can reproduce it?

Issue #2:
On a desktop, resolution 1024x768x32 (so a standard, average setting), when the window launches, the right part of the Jajuk's window is cut-off by the window's border. If I manually resize the window (i.e: move the right border more to the right, so that the cut-off area would display properly), it does resize, but the cut-off part stays cut-off. The increase in the displayed area happens in the left third of the screen. However, if I maximize the window, all is displayed properly. If I "Restore Down" from maximized view, it again gets cut off. Check if you can reproduce that one as well.
Note: this problem appeared before as well, but I forgot to report it. It's most likely not related to the portabilization process, but check anyway.

Suggestion #1:

Chris Morgan: I'm just questioning whether it's entirely safe - can the user break it at all? If they can then it would be safer, if you can, to get it to write the value every time. What's the format of that file like?

I noticed that Jajuk is written in Java. It is also FOSS. Therefore, you should have the right to go in and edit the necessary files to do what Chris (and now I) suggest. Try either to (1) write the default string on every launch (the one pointing to the Data folder of JajukPortable) over whatever string the user might have set for the "workspace", or (2) go look for that particular entry in the code and remove it, or gray it out. Pretty much like Zach removed something from XChat when making PChat (I can't remember what the function was exactly, but he removed it from displaying).

I know, I know... I said I'm most likely not going to test Jajuk anymore... Well, I don't need it, I don't like it, but I started testing it... Blum Might as well check up on the progress Smile

Take care

Thanks

Great that I was able to clear up some of the issues. Just for giggles I wonder if java is set to check for update when activate? Instead of the program Jajuk? As for the other questions yes I have thought about playing with the code, however on another project I have been working on (RedNotebook) I believe I was advised not to by some of the developers....so I am not sure what I will do just yet. Also apparently there will be a new version imminently coming out so may wait as I have also spoken to them about a couple of other issues as well. Thanks for trying it out and sorry you did not like it. there were request for this type of program and this was the best I found on sorceforge.

You're welcome.

Just for giggles I wonder if java is set to check for update when activate?

Nah, I hate when programs connect to the Internet for whatever reason, and I especially hate automatic updates! Every single automatic update is turned off for me. Only some programs are sometimes left to notify about updates, but most are simply cut-off from the net at the installation. I like to do things manually, and follow the logic "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". In mid April I was reminded why it was a good thing - a "Security Update for Windows XP (KB979683)", if installed, totally broke down Sandboxie. And believe me, I feel safer with Sandboxie than with all the security patches MS can provide. Btw, later on Sandboxie was updated to deal with that MS update.

Out of curiosity, and in order to send you screenshots of what I meant by "Issue #2", could you provide me your email address? Either come on IRC to tell me yours, or simply send me an email [Removed upon request - mod Chris]. If you can, send me an email now, or reasonably quickly. I intend to get AFK soon for some 8-12 hours.

Take care

Disregard "Issue #2". I've sent you a screenshot, will sent a couple more tomorrow, but as I just tested, it's only on that one machine I told you about. Can't reproduce it on another. Curious, but it's not an issue with the program itself, it appears. Now, for real, good night Smile

Editted Description

I have a response from the authors of the software. Apparently Jajuk requires a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768

1.9.1 was released on

1.9.1 was released on 12-20-10. So we need a portable version as 1.8.5 is getting stale.

BTW they went from 1.8.5 to 1.9 then 1.9.1 so it really is not that old
