Foxit Portable: Installs ASK toolbar

This version of Foxit Portable PDF Reader installs the Ask toolbar, without giving the user an option to opt out. Is it possible to prepare a portable version WITHOUT the toolbar?

Can't Reproduce

Ask toolbar is not included with Foxit Portable published by PortableApps.com. I can't reproduce the behavior you are saying you see. Did you update it accidentally using the built in updater, which installs a local Foxit version?

Can Reproduce

From a clean install, the Ask button appears to the left of the search box. As far as I can see, the toolbar isn't installed though, it looks like it's just the icon that's included. It's going to be removed in the next version according to a post on the Foxit forum (which seem to be down at the moment but I'll post the link when it's available again).

Ad

I think I see the confusion. That's an advertisement. Foxit, the free version, is partially add supported. Most of the time, it's an ad for the full version of Foxit (which is payware). Sometimes it will be an ad for other things.

Confused

The registry entry "ShowAd"="0" has no effect now then (maybe by design) but if you hover over the icon it does actually say "Search in Internet".

LOL

I remember the ads as much bigger, 'banner' type things.

EDIT: Link added...

'red Ask button"will be removed in the next version

Ditched Option

I think they disabled the ability to hide the ad after one of the illegal portable sites was repackaging it with the ad disabled by default. We keep it enabled like it is in the Zip (and I know it did used to be disable-able). I don't think it unreasonable for a commercial software company to keep a single small ad in a freeware product as they do in Foxit, but it is their call. The other issues discussed in the thread (Ask toolbar being installed by the MSI installer) doesn't apply to our package.

Kill the search bar

Under tools/customize toolbars you can uncheck the find tool item and the Ask bar won't show in FoxitPortable.

Search is still possible using the binocular icon on the toolbar.
You can also search for text using tools/search.
However, if you use tools/find text , then the Ask bar comes back.

That's the one

And "ShowAd"="0" is still supported, it's just off by default. Right-click the toolbar to show ads (!)
