Updating protables

I'm refering to portable application in general that are published via this site, but especially i am concerned to the mozilla products.

Will there be any problems to update the portables installions via the in-menu options or if the program itself prompts you, like firefox and thunderbird do when new version is available?

In general, don't

Generally, it is quite common for the built-in updaters to simply install a full normal copy of the app into the standard location on the local machine that you are using at the time. Because of this, the simple advice is just never do it. Always wait for the PortableApps official release.

Also, it is possible that the requirements for portablisation will have changed between versions, meaning that the launcher needs to be modified as well.

Specifically, at the moment, the Mozilla suite updaters actually do work, though that hasn't been the case in the past, where a bug in the mozilla code meant that it would trample over the registry settings of the installed versions.

Personally, I'd recommend that you wait for the official updates. For Mozilla apps they're usually pretty swift in arriving, and in all honesty, just how much do you need the latest and greatest versions, unless you're directly suffering from one of the fixed bugs?

Seconded

The safest course of action is to be patient and wait for the updated version to appear here.

Yes i understand that, it's

Yes i understand that, it's just that i also install many addons and tweak many options, and it would be painful if i have to install fresh portable copies and start all ove again.

That is my main concern you see.

.

The settings and extensions will be preserved! Don't worry about it. You may or may not have noticed that in, for example, FirefoxPortable folder, you have separate App and Data folders. The App folder contains the base app with default settings. When you update a portable app, content of that folder, except for eventual plugins, gets erased, and the newer version of the app is installed there. The user's data, however, is stored in the Data folder, and will remain untouched by the update process. You can safely update without the fear of losing any settings and/or extension. Only if the version of the base app stops support for some extensions, will you not be able to use that particular add-on. So it's completely the same as with the local installation of a program. Just be patient, update from here, your data is safe.

Take care Smile
