Firefox is not recording history at all. Went to tools-options-privacy-history and it is set to remember all history. I have already re-installed firefox portable app over the top of existing and still no history. Any ideas? v3.6.3/Vista.

Is the history being lost from session to session or within a session?
In other words, does it wipe out when you quit or does it never record anything at all ever?

The 'library' is always empty at all times. However, under the history drop-down menu, there is a brief history of the last 10 pages visited, but that's it, nowhere else!

It might be a configuration issue or an add-on that is responsible for this behavior.
Have you gone in an made any "tweaks" to about:config?
Have you installed any "privacy" or speed-enhancement add-ons?
Ya know, it might very well be a corrupted file. The two you should be concerned with are places.sqlite and places.sqlite-journal
With FirefoxPortable shut down, go to x:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile and rename them to something like old-places.sqlite and old-places.sqlite-journal
Start FirefoxPortable, and see if that clears up the issue.

I renamed the two files and that worked but only temporarily. Now Firefox will not launch at all. I tried another reinstall over the top of existing app, rebooting, etc., NG. It seemed to stop working after I installed xmarks add-on. How can I remove xmarks if I can't open Firefox?

There's a couple of ways to do safe-mode, which starts without extensions/add-ons.

Once you are started, you can then disable/uninstall the offending stuff.

Where F:\ is the letter for the portable drive, I entered this at the command prompt:
F:\>firefoxportable.exe-safe-mode
and got this:
'firefoxportable.exe-safe-mode' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
F:\>
However if I enter
F:\>startportableapps.exe
it launches the platform menu
Can you advise more specifically?

You need to be in the right place to successfully run a command from the command prompt.
If FirefoxPortable.exe lives in F:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable then that's where you have to be. You cannot run it straight from F: because it won't see the exe file that's buried two levels deeper. The error you get basically says whatever you typed isn't a valid operating system command (that's the internal part) or an executable program that it can see (that's the external items it mentions). So, move to the right place and try again.
Which illustrates the point in the other thread that the command line shouldn't be considered a common skill anymore.
Edit: You successfully run startportableapps.exe because it does actually live in F:

Decades ago I was proficient with it, but it's just a vague memory now. Back to my original problem, renaming the two files as suggested resolved the issue perfectly! The launch issue was definitely caused by xmarks. I have un/reinstalled xmarks and all is working and stable now. Thanks!
