AFAIK Full AV software will have to be striped down to just a point and shoot scanner to be fully portable (like the already portable clam AV) but unfortunately because it isn't open source, it can't be modified so it isn't going to happen.
Although as I was looking through the avast site I stumbled on their own point and shoot AV also under a freeware licence which from a quick glance could be made portable.

Remember google is your friend.
is just small cleaner for few specific worms (about 20).
It is just one exe, runs on itself and is therefore portable as it is.
(no regshot done)
So it is not a real on demand scanner as clamwin is.
avast has a scan only version for U3, but this has to be paid for and registered and is then fixed to your u3 stick.
It scanns only on demand, clearly the services doing the real time schanning are not included there.

You said avast has a scan only for U3
I'm sure you meant On demand scan only
It will in fact Clean the viruses that it finds as well.
I use it a couple of times a week as a back up check and to look for FPs.
The reason for the distinction is that some products will run in a scan only mode which will tell you if you have an infection but not clean it, the Avast version will do both.
and you are correct, the cleaner, linked to above, is just an emergency tool that only handles a few specific viruses, similar to the MS MSRT, but not up dated any where near as frequently.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

McAfee also has a U3 enabled rael time scanner that does very well at detecting and removing virus'on my Sandisk drive
the people are not very keen of mcafee, since it tends to 'eat' number of the apps from this site.

Such as??? Because I have almost ALL of the apps from this site, as well as lots from other sites, and the McAfee USB U3 real time scanner hasn't caused problems with any, nor has it given a false positive.
maybe not for you but McAffe has shown in the past to show false positives.
After the recent svchost.exe false positive, I wouldn't go near McAfee.
