This just started a few days ago and I think it may have something to do with google changing their site. Gmail loads fine in IE on the same computer but I'd really like to use FFP. I don't really even know how to describe the problem so please take a look at the pic.
I'm using FF portable 3.6.3

For starters, try resizing the window - unmaximise and remaximise it. That may fix it.

I tried that the other day and I just did every variation of resizing I could think of, again, and it didn't help.
After my first post, I downloaded the latest alpha version of 3.7 and gmail loads fine, along with everything else.
GMail in 3.6.3 Portable works fine for me. Could it be an issue with the GMail theme you're using? (just a guess)
That's a thought. TBH I haven't even messed with it, I've just been using 3.7 a4 since it works.
So, problem (kind of) solved
