...Continuing from previous thread under now outdated...
I downloaded and installed GTk, PyGTK (& Python 2.6.5) in a virtual W2K PC. But I'm still getting the following error in the User directory.
I can also confirm that the application does run under WinXP Pro SP3, without additional GTK+ installations.

I will pass this issue on to the developer. In theory and on Windows XP as well as Windows 7 Python and the extra Python files are not needed as they are built into the program

https://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/rednotebook/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60&st... this is from the developers forum and I believe it addresses your concerns?

I've read over the posts and references, but I haven't got a clue as to what to do with them.
As I said previously, I have access to two W2K OS. One running IRL (@work) as W2K SP4 and another one as a virtual machine as W2K SP4 (different install than the IRL). With the virtual machine I installed GTK+, PyGTK, and Python to see if it would help. I am not allowed to install anything on the IRL W2K machine. Therefore, I do not believe it is a fluke or corruption of the OS as there are two different OS installations that can not run the application.
I tested the 0.9.4 Dev 1 last night on the virtual machine at home and was not able to run the application. I tested the 0.9.4 Dev 1 today at work, and still was not able to run the application. I then realized that there was a Dev 2 release and I've tried that at work as well. Same error exists.

What is the directory structure you have? C:\PAS? the python is located within the files of the Rednotebook folder in the PortableApps Drive In reading the post I told you of apparently the first two error messages are normal in Windows as this program was originally imported from Linux. In looking at your error log it appears that the program can not find its directory to get the python from. Also as I stated previously I did not write the program I am just packaging it. Did you try the installed program to see if it was truly in the program or in your machine? Have you tried it on any none 2k machines?
Please re read the link as I have said half of your quoted message is in fact adrressed there.
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss
Since you have stated that the application does not look outside of it's own structure for the necessary files, the path to the application probably isn't the issue. That being said, I changed the path to mimic a portable installation and it still didn't work.
Yes, as I have said before, I have tried the installable version under W2K and it too fails with the same error message.
As for other OS tests. I did state that I can get the portable application to run under WindowsXP Pro.
I have re-read the referenced link several times. It does not cover the scenario presented by my error log completely. For instance, the referenced link does indeed refer to the 'bindtextdomain' module. But it does not mention that the 'dll routine failed' nor that 'gtk could not be found'.
The referenced link refers to a 'webkit', but I'm not having that issue. The referenced link references another link, but it too refers to a 'webkit'.
Now I will grant that the developer does provide compiling instructions to make a Windows version of the application. However, I don't have any experience with Python, so it is still somewhat of a mystery to me. I therefore do not know how to begin to follow the instructions in order to compile a windows build.
Now all that being said, perhaps I should submit the error log to the developer directly? I would really like to see the application work for me. Thank you for your efforts with making the application portable.

I am awaiting an answer directly from the author of the program, Just curious the 2k installs is it in NTFS or Fat32? The reason why I asked about the path was in the launcher there are some changes I made to facilitate working directories and such.

Looks like he may have answered both of us as I see that you posted on his forum as well. It may have something to do with the path structure of 2K? Unfortunately I did not test this on 2K nor do I have a way to do so. Also it appears to run well on Vista, 7 and XP so not sure how it would be to create a different version for just 2K. Take a look at what the author posted on his forum please.

Please be more neat with your pages... it makes them much easier to look at. I've tidied it up somewhat, but I still think that most or all of that blockquote should go.
Also this is a development test; please set the DisplayVersion to end in Development Test N rather than "Dev N". Additionally it's not an English program, it's multilingual.

Thank you for your feedback Chris. Sorry I screwed things up so badly. I will fix the development Test issue immediately. I will also fix the multilingual support I thought I had but it must have slipped by me. I appreciate your constructive criticism I will also get rid of all the block quoting and leave it so that the user will need to go to the main authors pagfe for more info.

It's not a bad screw up, just a few fairly minor things to improve.

Question. What is the categorical difference between development, alpha and beta releases? Who decides? Is there certain criteria?
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss
That's the way it goes. It's currently decided by John when a program is ready to progress to the next step. There is no further subdivision of categories.
I put a discussion of it in the PortableApps.com Launcher Manual glossary.

So will the splash screen change? The one that says Alpha or Beta test on it?
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss
Only at Pre-Release - then it gets its own splash screen.

I understand the process I just find it a bit confusing that it says development as well as alpha and beta yet it is only supposed to be called development?
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss
It says "Alpha or Beta Quality" which means it's still in development, thus "Development Test."
JOhnTHaller or any other user on 2k can you please download this and try it to see if it does or does not work with 2K.
Thanks

Ok, but how would one make the PATH portable? The developer found that someone suggests updating the host PC's PATH information. Is there a way to do that with using a PortableApps method?
EDIT: I believe it has something to do with the [Environment] section of the launcher.ini. I'm searching for an example now...
/s/ When life turns your dreams to dust, vacuum
original post edited thanks again Chris Morgan
[Launch]
ProgramExecutable=RedNotebook\Rednotebook.exe
CommandLineArguments=-path=%PAL:App%\RedNotebook[DirectoriesMove]
user=%PAL:AppDir%\RedNotebook\user
[FilesMove]
.recently-used.xbel=%PAL:DataDir%\tmp
[DirectoriesCleanupIfEmpty]
%AppData%\gtk-2.0
I added the command line argument, not sure if that would do the job or not?Go with the next message from Chris MOrgan please
Note he also stated he had not tested this to work on 2K

It's just a straight [Environment] value like this:

Thanks Chris, I guess I misunderstood him? At least you came to save me lol

I put the environment section as the first set of statements, but I'm still getting the "can't find GTK" message. Could the program be expecting to find the string 'gtk' in the environment variable path?

Let me try a few things on this end will get back to you

You can try adding that bold line to the RedNotebookPortable.ini file it may do it?

Wouldn't this be better considered an office application? At least, is it really a "utility?"
To be honest not sure where it really should be, it could be office, could be utility, could be PIM, could be productivity?

download and will be up to 300 for this repackage. Developer is working on version 1.0 and promises some cool new features. Just want to say thanks to all who have downloaded this app and for all the great feedback, comments and such left for this app.

No joy here trying to run this.
WindowsXP work computer without admin privs.
"application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect".
when I click on the application exe directly. If I use the PA launcher I egt the dev splash screen and then nothing, not even an error.
Some googling indicates that this is usually fixable with some dlls from microsoft that I can't install without admin privs(and strictly speaking would make this not portable) And I'm not even entirely sure that those dlls would fix the problem.
Also I just received the latest version of htis program and will be making it portable soon, perhaps that may "fix" it. but will definitely look into it.
Also if you can please look in the data folder and then see if there is a user folder? If so please copy and paste the rednotebook.log file

The new beta version may be addressing this, not sure as not sure which dll's it is not loading for you?

BTW thanks to all who have downloaded this repackage of mine. I know it pails to many programs here at PortableApps, yet I am excited that it has over 860 total downloads since I first started, and there is even a link on the authors homepage to this. Congrats to all!!

444 downloads of version 1.0 and not a comment maybe U should go for pre-release? A new version on horizon as 1.1 is in beta now

RNBP 1.0 DT1 works on XP SP3 with admin rights.
Curiously however I couldn't get it to run in a VirtualBox running XP SP3. The RedNoteBookPortable process would start but no main RNB process then the portable would dies after about 3 seconds. This isn't any major or even minor issue as support for VB's aren't really a priority but thought I'd report it anyway.
On an unrelated note, vf2nsr, your homepage link is pointing to your previous outdated RNB thread.

Thanks for feedback and will fix the homepage. Me thinks one of the dll's may not be present in the VB
As a side note this is what fixes are to the 1.1 which I hope should be available soon::
* When searching for text, search in dates too (Search for 2010-05 displays all entries of May 2010)
* Improve checking for new version (Show version numbers)
* Save last selected tab (Search/Clouds) (LP:590483)
* Save journal files as readable unicode
* Save journal files without python directives
* Let the Preview and the Edit button always have the same size
* Get rid of warnings caused by older webkit versions
* Use webkit on Windows
* Use webkit by default if installed
* Get rid of CamelCase in sourcecode
* Open external files asynchronously with subprocess.Popen from preview
* Fix: Correctly highlight multiple links and images on one line
* Fix: Months that have been cleared of all text are now rewritten to disk
* Rewrite export assistant code
* Much more code rewritten or restructured
* Bundle msvcr dll in windows installer (Fixes Error 14001)

Thanks for your work so far, vf2nsr!
Version 1.1.1 of the app is out since 2010-08-21 (Changelog) — can we expect an update from you?
Looks like a usable app, especially if one moves between Windows and Linux.
I will be working on it in next day or two. Been real busy as I moved to a new place so just getting myself situated. Thanks for understanding

I just need some guidance first regs hot on win7 64 bit only shows 2 issues
Previously ( for XP ) I dealt with the second issue with
[FilesMove]
.recently-used.xbel=%PAL:DataDir%\tmp
But that seems to not work in Win 7?
The first issue I believe has to do with XP putting it in AppData and 7 putting it in AppData\Roaming Is there a universal workaround for this?
[Remember to put your <li> tags inside a <ul> tag - mod Chris]
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss
.recently-used.xbel=%PAL:DataDir%\tmp
!? That's just moving Data\.recently-used.xbel to Data\tmp\.recently-used.xbel; I don't think that's what you wanted? Surely this is simply all you want?:I am a Christian and a developer and moderator here.

Guess I was a bit rusty from my sabbatical lol you saved me again Chris appreciate it..........
Uploading a new version as we speak 1.1.1 has some bug per the author so putting up 1.1.2 beta which is what he suggested, trying to get his approval to call it stable so maybe it can go official? So far all is good with it.

Just wanted to notify that when I launch RedNoteBook Portable 1.0.0 Development Test 1 in a Win XP box nothing happens, the application crashes silently.
If set portable=1 in default.cfg as described in the help text of the base app it starts and then stops after 3 seconds without displaying anything, and has an error in it's log file.
I have reported this to Jendrik Seipp, the author, on Monday 13th and he said "I'll look into it and get back to you". No reply as yet.
It's installed and working on my external hard drive on WinXP at a school computer...so yeah, it works here...
Do deedy do...what?
See release notes above hope all will be happy

DO NOT CHANGE THE INPUT FORMAT! (Only put that in capitals because you did it again to the Zaz one after I fixed it last time :P)

Apparently I went to hit other options and got input format by mistake, just figured it out. Is Input format a new thing don't remember seeing it before

I spoke to creator of RedNotebook, asked him about this version as it was an update and asked if it was close enough to final release for us to post it as such his response follows:
So I would say this is good to official if you desire

You don't need to update the topic with the official link. Usually the dev test threads just get locked after release.
This was done as the original publisher of Rednotebook had linked this thread as a portable download. I have asked him to link the official page BUT inn case it was not done yet I wanted anyone who got to this page to be sent to the official page.
