Can OpenOfficePortable work across platform?
1)
If after installing OpenOfficePortable on Windows. Copy the folder on an USB stick. Insert the stick on a Linux box. Can I evoke OpenOfficePortable on Linux box and vice versa.
Or
2)
I must install OpenOfficePortable on an USB stick before it can work cross platform.

If I understand your advice correctly. An portable Windows OpenOffice installed/copied to USB stick will work on Linux if wine is running on the later. So it applies to portable Linux OpenOffice. If I'm wrong please correct me. TIA

OpenOffice (the original source version) is cross-platform in the sense that you can download a version appropriate for your operating system i.e. Windows, Linux, Mac OSX etc. However, this is a separate notion from OpenOfficePortable, which is cross-Windows compatible in that, as already stated you can run it on multiple Windows computers without the need to install it.
The fact that OpenOfficePortable or any other Windows app may work in the Windows emulator for Linux, Wine is coincidental.

I made following test;
VM1 - WindowsXP 32bit
VM2 - WindowsXP 32bit
Virtualizer - Sun VirtualBox
host - Ubuntu 1004 64bit
1)
VM1
Connect an USB stick on VM1 and copy OO_portable folder on it. After finish I tried to evoke OOWriter and OOCalc there without success. Program started but stopped later. Non of the said program can start. No warning was found.
2)
VM2
2a)
Connect the USB stick on it. Tried to evoke OOWriter and OOCalc. But failed non of them can start. No warning was found
2b)
Copied the folder on VM2 desktop. Evoked OOWriter there. Following warning popup;
Warning: /org.openoffic.Office.Paths/Paths (and for locale zh-TW) could not be created. Unable to retrieve the node from the configuration server
The backend returned the following error
Configuration Parser: a com.sun.star.xml.sax.SAXParseException occurred while parsing: - {Parser Error; [line 6]: invalid tokenerror} Configuration Parser: a com.sun.star.xml.sax.SAXParseException occurred while parsing - {Parser Error: [line 6] invalid tokenerror}.

Just tested OpenOfficePortable on Ubuntu 10.04 64bit (host). Wine is running.
- Plugin the USB stick
- Ran
$ wine /path/to/OpenOfficeWriterPortable.exe
It worked without problem
$ wine /path/to/OpenOffice.Calc.Portable.exe
It also worked without problem.

Find another WinXP desktop computer testing the portable OO. But still failed
- Plugin the USB stick on the computer.
- execute OOWriterPortable
following warning popup:
Error lauching installer
I can't resolve why it launches the installer? I was NOT installing the Writer but to start the program.
OOCalcPortable was the same.

I really have no idea what you're doing. None of those error messages make sense. Run the OpenOffice.org Portable installer to make sure you get a proper copy of OpenOffice.org Portable, and make sure you're not installing it in too deep a directory.

I have 2 WinXP running on VM of Sun VirtualBox in a PC, a virtual machine, say;
VM-1 - WinXP 32bit
VM-2 - WinXP 32bit
VM-1
OpenOfficePortable is installed on the Desktop of VM-1. It works without problem. Writer/Calc etc. can be started.
Path = /Documents and Settings/Owner/desktop/OpenOfficePortable/OpenOfficeWriterPortable.exe
There is no user created on VM-1. Owner is the default user, not created.
To test OpenOfficePortable as a portable package I copies its folder/directory from VM-1 on an USB stick with drag_and_drop. All steps went through without complaint
Afterwards I connected the USB stick to the host of this virtual machine. Ubuntu 10.04 64bit is running on the host with "wine' installed.
On console I ran;
$ wine /media/USB_stick/OpenOfficePortable/OpenOfficeWriterPortable.exe
Writer started. I can edit document on it.
$ wine /media/USB_stick/OpenOfficePortable/OpenOfficeCalcPortable.exe
also worked without problem.
It proves that this software is portable
VM-2
However it didn't work on VM-2. WinXP detected the software. But I can't start Writer/Calc etc. by clicking their icons.
So I copied the folder from the USB stick on the desktop of VM-2. After finish but I still can't start Writer/Calc etc. by clicking their icons.
Path = /Documents and Settings/satimis/Desktop/OpenOfficePortable/OpenOfficeWriterPortable.exe
On VM-2 user=satimis has been created. Now not the default user - owner
I doubt whether this portable software doesn't work on Windows running on VM. Therefore I took the USB stick to a WinXP workstation in next door testing it. It still failed. I can't start Writer/Calc on the USB stick.
That is the complete story of my test with the sole aim testing its portability.

I think the problem we have here is that some portable apps don't like to be copied around. They only support path changed at the drive letter level i.e. when you have it installed on your USB drive and the drive letter changes from F to J or so.

I see your point should I understand it correctly. If I install the apps direct on the USB stick then I can run the apps on the stick on any Windows box. I already doubt whether I made a mistake.
But I can't resolve why it works on Linux without problem?
I'll make another test later installing the portable apps on the USB stick

To add on to Simeon, there is no need to copy over OpenOfficePortable on to the Windows machine. It's just wasting time and wearing out the drive.
Our PortableApps are meant to be run directly from the drive.

It was because the portable apps failed to run direct on the USB stick. Therefore I copied the apps on WindowsXP PC (running as VM on Sun VirtualBox). But still failed.
Now I'm installing the apps direct on the USB stick to check what will be the result.
