Wondered how many people had to make programs portable because of compatability issues?
Earlier this month, I took the plunge and upgraded my office desktop to a laptop -- had been putting it off as I knew the time involved in setting up a new computer, reloading programs, and etc...
Anyways, I went laptop this time around for the office instead of replacing with another desktop.
I was hestitant to go with 64bit version but could not find a 32bit version I was interested in.
Now I know why I was hestitant to go with 64bit as I had some hiccups on key software I use that would not install on a Windows 7 64bit through cd installation that installed on Windows 7 32bit -- I know this because I also have a 32bit laptop I use for travel and away from the office.
Because I needed these programs on the 64bit, I ended up making the programs portable and now have them on the 64bit laptop.
After doing so, I started playing with other programs and making some portable as well......On my office 64bit laptop, I have it on the C drive, on the 32bit laptop, they are on a 32gb flash drive.
These programs I have made portable are for own personal use on MY computers and not re-distributed.
Our portable apps are nothing to do with the 32-bit/64-bit split. There is nothing you can really do in making a launcher which will make a 32-bit app which doesn't work normally on a 64-bit OS work on it. I really don't understand what you're trying to say or what you're asking.
I am a Christian and a developer and moderator here.
“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1
I thought it was explained in my previous post, so i'll explain again.
Software installation program on CD -- you know the compact disc you put in the cd player of a computer -- the one that is also used install programs, listen to CD's, or watch DVD's?
OK, software installation CD WOULD NOT INSTALL on Windows 7 64bit computer -- gave error message and to contact software company for version that would install.
The same software installation CD WOULD INSTALL on Windows 7 32bit.
Because of the compatability problems of being able to install the software on the Windows 7 64bit computer and the need for this software to on the Windows 7 64bit laptop, I created portable versions of those programs to run on the Windows 7 64bit computer.
I would not have created portable versions HAD there not been CD software installation issues because of Windows 7 64bit not being to install. Thus the reason and my point of the thread.
Again, feels like deja vu from the original post.
Are you the same one who gave me the warm welcome asking if I was a spammer?
I don't really see any questions other than asking if anyone has had any compatibility issues and therefore necessitated to make an app portable. My answer to that is a simple "no" because so far I've only come up against 32bit OS's.
Although I agree with Chris, I don't see how making a 32-bit app portable makes it compatible with 64-bit, but whatever works.
What program(s) wouldn't install? Windows 7 64-bit will run 32-bit programs just fine. Only drivers need to be 64-bit. If you are trying to install a program that uses drivers and only a 32-bit version is included, then you'll have problems. Whether the program is portable or not is irrelevant.
Vintage!
The programs on CD that could not be installed on the Windows 7 64bit were graphic programs/software............not drivers.
If you can not install program on the computer via the CD installation -- which is the only means to install the software/program, then yes there is a compatability issue.
Had no problem installing the software programs on Windows 7 32bit but error message on installation on Windows 7 64bit stated that the software installation was incompatable AND to contact software manufacturer for compatable CD.
Because of not being able to install the software/program on the Windows 7 64bit, I made those programs portable, so I could use on the Windows 7 64bit computer that the only other option to install these programs would be to pay for the software again via upgrade, just to install it on one computer when they already install on XP, VISTA, and Windows 7 32Bit computers that is in my house. Not worth the money to buy them again for 1 computer.
The point of my thread is because of the conflict issue of not being able to install these softwares on my Windows 7 64bit computer and the fact that I use and need these programs, I created portable versions to be able to run the programs on the Windows 7 64bit computer.
Had these programs installed on the Windows 7 64bit computer, like they have on the on the XP, VISTA, and Windows 7 32Bit computers, I would not have made those programs portable.
The programs work the same on 32bit and 64bit -- the fact of this thread was asking did anyone else have any issues such as mine where in order to use a program(s) that would not install on their OP systems, that a portable version had to be made in order to be able to use the software on the computer were you could not install it.
Which goes back to the very first line of this thread when I asked:
"Wondered how many people had to make programs portable because of compatability issues?"
I have been very clear in all my post in this thread that the compatability issue was only the CD installation of the software of not being able to install it on the 64bit computer -- not how the programs will work on both 64bit and 32bit versions ----- nowhere in my posts did I mention that or ask about 32bit programs working the same as on 64bits. A program working depending on the different bits and installing a program are 2 different things.
It was about not being able to install them on the 64bit and making them portable to be able to use on the 64bit.
It was said:
"I don't really see any questions other than asking if anyone has had any compatibility issues and therefore necessitated to make an app portable."
Umm, that was the question and the whole point of the thread. Nothing more - nothing less.
