Download SuperTuxKart Portable 0.7 Development Test 1 [163MB download / 306MB installed]

Release Notes:

Development Test 1 (2011-01-10):

  • Updated to 0.7
  • Its an even bigger package now as they changed a lot in this release, including the underlying library (irrlicht).
  • Settings ignored:Your old settings are still there but ignored. Thats the behaviour of the base app and thus the portable version too due to the amount of changes.
  • I havent implemented anything language switching wise, could you give me some feedback if it comes up in your system language?

Development Test 1 (2010-04-24): Initial release

  • Updated the Game to 6.2a
  • It uses the beta 4 of the new PAL and the unicode Installer.
  • Thanks to Auria and joerg for their fast irc support!

I took this over from Digitxp who took it over from PieterK.
If you want it to be smaller, you can easily delete cars and tracks. They are inside the App/SuperTuxKart/data folder.
I tested it on WinXPSP3 limited. Could someone make sure it works on Vista/7 too?

Many thanks to Partick for still hosting my Apps!

I tested it on Windows 7 x64.

Hi, ...

SuperTuxKart Portable 0.6.2a Development Test 1

I tested it on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. (1366x768) = It work.

The game by default have videomode 800x600 windowed mode. (It seem correct)

But if i made a videomode change, ex: 1366x768 (fullscreen or windowed), and after use this portable package, on an other computer that have videomode max 1024x768 or 1280x1024, it can made a problem.

---

Also, ... Did you know if SuperTuxKart v0.7.x will be made portable, soon ?

Thanks

for testing. 0.7 is alpha now but I plan to do a portable version once it becomes stable.

Awesome game! Tried Development Test 1 (2010-04-24) with default settings, Win XP SP 2, worked like a charm. "RegShot" is as clean as they come. All files where they should be, all entries where they should be... Smile

However, I noticed a curious bug in the game, which most likely has nothing to do with the portabilization process. The bug happened as follows:
- I ran the game
- went in to change the Display, and the top option was to run fullscreen
- I chose that option
- it went fullscreen, and waited for 5 seconds (for me to choose whether to make the change permanent)
- than it reverted.
After that, there was no option to run in fullscreen. Even if the game was restarted!
Note: I'll abbreviate in further text "fullscreen" with "FS"...

Now, IMO, 5 seconds (!) is way to little time for a user to choose his settings. I barely read the message box (I haven't even seen it for entire 5 seconds, my monitor was "auto-adjusting screen") when it reverted back, with the option no more available! Tried several times, deleting Data folder to check and that repaired the bug. I reproduced it several times, also. When the option to go to FS disappears, I can get to FS by changing my current resolution (whether increasing it or decreasing it), then the option to go to FS appears again. I choose it, and after getting in FS I change back to the resolution I wanted.

Portabilization-wise, it's great. I've found only this problem with FS option disappearing, and it appears to be related to the game itself. Can you try to verify/reproduce this, and if so, can you file a bug-report to the developers?

Take care

hm

first Im glad you like it Smile
About the FS: I tried it and run the game, went to the screen settings and changed it to fullscreen. My monitor went dark (=auto-adjust just like yours) but I had enough time to confirm the settings. it was 800 by 600 or something which is pretty small for today, but I was able to increase the resolution on the screen settings page and so I got my 1024*768 size back. It has 2 buttons for increase/decrease the size.
As you said, I think its a bug in the game itself. It did work for me but the 5 secs is pretty short. Maybe I will write them about it. Changing it to 10 sec would maybe be better.

EDIT:

There is a bug about it in their bug tracker. Someone said that the problem has something to do with "resolution blacklisting" and will be gone in the next version (0.7).

Hmmm

Take a look at the top 3 downloads... (ignore the others)

http://fancygadgetry.comlu.com/Untitled-1.png

it keeps downloading it differently. I'm using a proxy though, so it may be causing the problem.

It's the proxy. I tried it and got a corrupted 8.5 mb file.

People, please test this app, and report back your thoughts (!) in order for it to get officially released!

Update on my testings Biggrin
Works perfectly on XP SP2 and XP SP3. Works both with and without admin privileges.

No files were left behind! (it's clean)
No relevant registry entries were left behind! (it's clean)
___________________________________________________________________________________

I manually downloaded the SuperTuxKart add-on pack, and tested SuperTuxKartPortable after adding tracks and karts in relevant folders under SuperTuxKartPortable\App\supertuxkart folder. It still ran perfectly clean on all systems (I am aware of the possibility of loss after upgrade to the next version, don't worry; I'll just re-add the karts and tracks from the add-on after upgrade).

Since the way it's currently built, add-ons must go in the App folder and will be replaced once the base up is updated. Will you try and look into a way of preserving user's add-ons, or will it be left as a "user-hack"? It's not hard to make another installer to handle the installation of those karts/tracks, I only don't know how you'll go about preserving them, and if it's possible? Since this is not as easy as with Firefox plugins, for example, where you can simply decide not to delete the folder... Maybe preserving these 2 folders, but overwriting their content? Anyway, I hope there'll be possibility for others to play with the add-ons, as they're loads of fun as well. It'll always be an easy "hack" for me to add them for myself...

This game is awesome. I hope you get more feedback. Also, I'll be testing it on a Vista machine soon, so you'll get feedback on it. Btw, the "resolution blacklisting" bug, I've encountered it on another machine as well, but it's nothing too important, it's in the base app, not the portable launcher, and it will be fixed in the next version... so it's nothing to worry about Biggrin

Take care Smile

Addons

Once 0.7 is released, I will have a look at the addons. I know the installer can be told to delete the whole App folder but leave out one folder but I don't know what happens if there is an update in that specific folder.

Another possibility would be a "Portable Addon Pack"™ (;)) so users could easily reinstall the additional stuff they want.
Maybe I can even get the addon installer to make a list of installed addons and have them auto-selected on reinstall...

Update

Hi. A little update Smile

Now tested on 32bit Vista.
Leaves no files behind, (it's clean) and
no reg entries found via searching (should be clean)

I couldn't use RegShot for some very peculiar reason... Anyway, looks very clean, and runs great Smile

Couldn't run on XP SP2

Downloaded ok, MD5 checked ok.
After install tried running from portable apps menu, PA beta splash screen came up and then nothing else.
Tried running the supertuxcart.exe file directly, got an error that said it couldn't run because it wasn't configured properly.. any clue what would cause this?

Please delete the SuperTuxKartPortable folder, and then reinstall. I tried on XP SP2, even running App\SuperTuxKart\supertuxkart.exe directly starts the game successfully, although not in a portable manner (the settings are only created and stay on that machine and for that particular user). For some reason, supertuxkart got wrongly installed, re-installation is the most probable "cure".

I guess I should have

I guess I should have mentioned before that I had tried reinstalling with the same results, just tried a third time.. still nothing.
Rechecked the MD5 of the downloaded file, it matches, so I would think the downloaded file isn't corrupted.
I'm installing on a local drive under E:/PortableApps/
Haven't had any problem with other apps, and I've tried quite a few.
Perhaps there's some dependency I'm missing?

Can you please provide the exact error message you're getting?

Disclaimer: I'm not the developer, just a user like yourself Smile

SuperTuxKart 0.6.2 Dependencies:
PLIB, SDL, OpenAL, OpenGL, LibOgg, LibVorbis.

I definitely know that SDL, OpenAL, LibOgg and LibVorbois are already bundled with SuperTuxKart. I'm unsure about PLIB and OpenGL, but read my disclaimer Smile I think you should provide that error message first, so someone might recognize what's it about...

Regards Smile

It says: "This application

It says: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem"

I've got opengl32.dll in my system32 folder, I see the sdl, openal32, ogg and vorbis dlls in the SuperTuxKart folder, I'm not sure what to look for for PLIB, it doesn't look like something they would assume you already have, but I don't see anything that's obviously it in the STK install.

Guess I'll just have to give this one a miss.

Finally got a chance to download

it looks great.

I just wish my 10 year old toshiba (XP SP3) could handle the game (runs slower than a snail on crack).

But hey... what can I do?

Maybe

Not on a 10 year old machine Blum

I love Ubuntu but I find it's as resource-demanding as Windows, if not more so.

I know

but thats an alpha release. On the right hand side it still says 0.6.2a.
And, as mentioned above, I/we dont do alpha/beta releases.

Over Here

As always, the only place you need to mention this is over here:
https://portableapps.com/node/19705

It's linked directly from the Development page and ensures the devs know about the new release. It will be posted as soon as it is completed. Please don't ask about new versions in old development test topics or news posts. Just in that linked thread.
