i upgraded my SUSE installation from Milestone 4 to Milestone 7 via zypper and CLI.
Well now KDE is going beserk and wont keep a window open or visable and the mouse pointer dissapears.
Also the temp reading says the computer is now at 145.4C and the fan is consistantly on.
so i must ask... is the computer on fire or not?

I'm not familiar with SUSE, but if your fan is running, your processor probably isn't overheating. I'd try booting up from another Live-CD and see if you have problems with another distro. If not, you might need to do a fresh install of SUSE. I've noticed that a lot of Linux distros have problems upgrading to new versions. So does Windows. Best just to back up your data, reformat, and start from scratch.
the optical drive died so i was not able to do a fresh and legit upgrade to Milestone 7 or install any other distro. so... umm not much i can do there.
Start from scratch... well cant seem to do that seeing as the computer doesnt boot to USB either. What a POS.
I have a feeling that, if your computer were at 145C, something would've burned up/melted by now.

i got a cooling pad but it did nothing using the standard USB connector.
USB is 5V @ 500mA so i plugged in a wall adapter that is 12V @ 300mA. BOY is it neato. i would not want to get my figers in the blades path. it sounds like a let and it cools like one too. went from 159C to 37C. \o/. so much win.

I would never use a laptop without a cooling pad. I had a machine (with a Celeron!) that got so hot that the plug for the power supply melted the surrounding plastic and fused with it.

The key to keeping a laptop cool is to make sure there's clearance for the bottom air outlet. Most (if not all) laptops will not provide this clearance when laid flat. Simply place two flat objects underneath the laptop thick enough to allow airflow from that vent on each side and that will bring down the temperature quite a bit. A cooling pad is unnecessary unless your working environment is already hot or you have some other factor that keeps the machine hot. Obviously a cooling pad will keep the machine cooler than good circulation and proper airflow, but in most situations, they're good enough.

I'm surprised your laptop could even get that hot by itself. I figured it would've shut down or melted or something before getting that hot. 159C is nowhere near a normal running temperature. There has to be something wrong with it.

its called a Celron Processor and bad cooling design. seriously they made the heatsink in the Toshiba (the 152C) so freaking huge it still didnt make a dent. they could have added more fans and gotten some better cooling.
this time with my modem and its not my fault.
i pay 29.99 for 1.5mbit ADSL2+ from verizon. the line is so old that i am getting static and surges. this is the reason i am no longer on the irc chat because my pirated line can not handle that many connections. The bad line fried my modem too in which i paid 100USD for. it was a linux based Actiontec GT704GW.
i am thinking now of bribing a neighbor for access to their nets and client bridgeing my WRT54GS (8mb flash 32mb ram) with ddwrt on it to their connection.

How long have you had the computer? 7 years maybe? It might be time fish out all that money you have been saving in the bank to upgrade almost everything.

the original laptop that was mentioned above as going that hot is a clients. not mine.
the dying thinkpad R40 i have now with a broken internal fan does quite well with the keyboard off, P4 heatsink sitting on the CPU's heatsink and a 220MM fan blowing air from the top as well as a cooling pad. anyone say 30C :3 This is far better than the Toshiba with a Celeron

this time with a thumb drive.
i bought an HP 4GB from BigLots for 8 USD. this was great (i have 3). but this perticular one which i have designated bluehp due to me marking the hp logo blue (the others are green cap, green light (because the rest are red) and blacked out).
Well as soon as i started using it heavly it started having I/O errors and i was unable to do jack diddly squat with it. turns out the firmware was shot. so HP says. so they give me some software to update the firmware. it worked once and then died due to a I/O error. it is going to be returned to HP.
Just to let you know the HP v125W is in fact a HP branded PNY flash drive.
