Cubic Explorer Portable Development Test 3

Application: CubicExplorer
Category: Utilities
License: Open Source
Description: CubicExplorer is a very sturdy File Manager for the Windows OS. It is a great alternative to Windows Explorer, and has many more features, such as 'favourites' and Mapping Network drives straight from the navigation bar up the top, but all else aside, it looks a lot better than most file managers packaged with your OS!

Where are the results?

I know people have downloaded this and am a bit grumpy that not 1 of the 140 people has come back telling me whether it is good or not. How am I supposed to release the next development test if I do not have feedback? Hopefully I will get feedback soon. Please take it upon yourselves to comment. I put about a month of effort into this to make sure it is release worthy. My tests show it should go straight to the pre-release stages, however if I do not have other peoples views saying yay or neigh, how am I supposed to prove it is worthy for pre release? Now. I have put my month or so into this and would appreciate 1 or 2 minutes of people's time to get results, especially when it has been up half a month? Now I have that off my chest, I can go back to my normal self.

I hope that all of you who have downloaded this find it satisfactory and works as it should. Please come back here to comment. All you have to do is come to portableapps.com and search 'cubic'. It is the first result.
I hope to be flooded over the next few days.

Many thanks to those who reply,

Shane Thompson

Minor changes

All...
I have added another minor change to the about box to reflect PA.com.
I have not added this to the release notes because it already says 'Changes to about box'.

HELP ;(

John,

Is it possible for you to have a look at this and tell me what you think plz? As you can see there are absolutely NO results here, I don't want this app to die, and I need to know I am doing the conversions right.

Everything works for me, but that's just me.

Also, any other mods/devs who look at this for me and let me know what happens it will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Shane Thompson

I'm not John

And I don't play one on TV...

I've given CubicPortable a spin, and I was a bit put off.

There's something wrong, and I'm not sure what it is.

Before we start blaming equipment, let me say that I'm on a Quad-core processor with 4 gigs of RAM running Windows 7. Yes, there's an anti-virus suite running. I put CubicPortable on my local harddrive in C:\PortableApps\CubicPortable

I also downloaded CubicExplorer from the author's website, and extracted the zip into C:\Users\Jim\Downloads\CubicExplorer_0.90_final\CubicExplorer

When tested separately, CubicExplorer always started immediately, in approximately 1 second. CubicExplorer started in an appropriately-sized window with docked bookmarks and folder panels. These panels can be easily closed with the X in the corner of each, depending on user preference.

Over the course of about 20 starts, CubicPortable took between 6 seconds and 13 seconds to start. On first launch, CubicPortable started full-screen with no panels. This makes the software look un-professional and overly simplistic. Yes, the panels can be opened, but they open in separate floating windows. Then it takes some manipulation to make them dock into the program's window so that it looks something like a reasonable explorer replacement.

So then I deleted everything, and reinstalled CubicPortable, and re-extracted CubicExplorer. I went down into the CubicPortable App directory and REPLACED the
CubicExplorer directory with the author's distribution. Then I ran CubicPortable.

CubicPortable started immediately, in a regular-sized window, with panels docked on the left margin.

So like I said, something is wrong. Maybe everyone else who tried it decided that it wasn't worth pursuing?

OK. Thanks. I shall fix this all, I forgot about it before I uploaded it O.o not good hey Blum

I shall update this with the default config.

So you say it started immediately?
That sounds good. btw I have had frequent contact with the creator of the actual project who has been extremely helpful so thanks to him Smile

As I said, I shall change these all back in the next release within the next few days so stay tuned Smile

Thanks J Neutron,

The problem has been located and fixed (finally).
Thankyou for your results, they have been wonderfully helpful.

To everyone else, we are now in Dev Test 3. Please test this software and let me know your findings as well!

Thanks,
Shane Thompson.

Some Questions

Is this a single-pane file manager? That is to say, it only displays one folder location at once? I tend to prefer a dual-pane or even quad-pane manager myself. Also, is this open source/freeware? (just out of curiosity).

Feedback is hard to come by here, most people don't have the time, inclination or know-how, so don't take it personally.

hehe

Yeah, it took me some time to figure out the panels and docking. See my post above to read my testing.

I hate being the party pooper

As much as I hate to judge a book by its cover, looking at the screenshots I have to confess I wasn't overly impressed. Not that I want to rain on ShaneT's parade, but personally I think you'd have a hard time convincing me to try this one.

I looked at another quad-pane file manager somebody had lurking around here, Q-Dir I think and to my surprise I actually prefer Free-Commander over it. I found the interface of Q-Dir to be a little clumsy. I mention it to illustrate that I'm not opposed to trying something new but with file managers I guess I'm a hard man to impress. Biggrin

In response, it has tabs, so

In response, it has tabs, so that should be adequate. If you still want panes, I shall put it forward to the developer of this app on your behalf, if you wish, or you could do so yourself.

Yeah, I agree

It is hard to beat FreeCommander, but I was hoping to at least run this beside for a while.

I missed auto-refresh. When I extracted a zip into a new subdirectory, I had to manually refresh to show that subdirectory. Not exactly what I expected.

FreeCommaner does the job

I'm actually not a huge fan of FreeCommander believe it or not, I use it because I'm trying to use as many PA.c as I can, replacing any other non PA.c alternatives that I have. It's just easier that way. Smile It does what I need it to I guess and I do like some of it's features, it just feels a little bloated. It is more of the style of file manager I prefer though (dual-pane), I'm not a big fan of tabbed file managers (even though I know FreeCommander has tabs too).

Cubic address bar

I did like the Cubic address bar. If you click on the dotted thing on the far end of it, it changes from a browser-style c:\this\that\etc to buttons for the places you've been. One click and you're back there.

Being able to park the panels can give you folders on the left, files on the right. If you want, the panel can compress to a vertical tab that will "fly-out" the folder list when you hover. That's pretty neat because you can have it show only when you need it.

Breadcrumbs???

Did you mean breadcrumbs???
I dont want to shoot myself in the foot, but I have found a slight glitch, which some may be able to use to their advantage, which is that when you go back, the breadcrumbs bar does not reset the bar (if you get what I mean).

It is FLOSS (free/libre/open source software) licensed under the Mozilla Public License.

Source code available here.

Note: The page states the programming language is Delphi so will need $$$$ to play with the code.

DEV TEST 3

Hi guys,

Thank you J Neutron, your findings helped me locate and fix the problem, being in my modified layout Blum
I have reset the layout to default, so you can all start CubicExplorer faster than you have been recently...

I hope you all find this better, and please leave a comment to let me know what you think. Just look at what J Neutrons comment helped me with!

Again, many thanks to you J Neutron.

Thanks for looking into this, Shane.

I'll try the package again and see if it works better for me.

Still no auto-refresh?

Auto Refresh would be

Auto Refresh would be something specific to the software itself, not PA.com. Sorry about that. Shall I suggest it to the software author on your behalf?

Thanks for your help!
Shane

EDIT:
Hey J,

Have you tried the software yet?
It works perfectly for me.

Thanks again,
Shane Thompson.
