[Dropped] PageBreeze Portable Dev Test 1

Support Dropped: I've dropped support for this portable app. There were several issues I was unable to resolve, but if you'd like, you can take it over.

Application: PageBreeze
Category: Development
Description: PageBreeze Free HTML Editor is an award-winning HTML Editor which has both visual (WYSIWYG) and HTML tag/source modes. PageBreeze Free HTML Editor's design emphasizes simplicity and ease-of-use. You'll find that you'll be creating great looking websites almost instantly--with virtually no learning curve!

Licensing

PageBreeze Free HTML Editor is completely free for personal, not-for-profit, or educational use. There are no limitations, no nag screens, no required registration, and the software will never expire . If you use PageBreeze in your job, or in a for-profit business for non-evaluation purposes, you must obtain an inexpensive license for PageBreeze Professional , which includes several more advanced features.

You may distribute the PageBreeze Free HTML Editor installation file in any way you wish, as long as you make no modifications to it. You are welcome to give PageBreeze to your customers or include it with other products (for example, a web hosting account), as long as you do not sell the software separately.

Release Notes
July 4, 2010: Initial Release

Known Bugs
The windows installer thing may popup on some computers every time you want to run PageBreeze. Read this to figure out how to solve that problem.

The original "Welcome to PageBreeze page does'nt come up on the first time. If you want to see it, navitgate the sidepanel to "PageBreezePortable\Sample Website\index.html" and open it up. Be careful where you save the files because the default location is PageBreezePortable\the_name_of_your_webpage.htm. I set the installer to delete all that stuff when you exit out of it.

Other Notes
This was tests on a 32 bit PC. The installer for the original program (the non-portable version) "updates system configuration" by adding dll's and ocx's to system32. I had to "mimick" what the installer does with the launcher, so it may take some time to start up. I don't know how this will affect 64-bit OS's because I never tried it on a 64 bit OS. If you want to try it, I'd greatly appreciate it, but try running it in a virtual machine because I don't wanna mess up your computer.

You should probably explain the licence

Given that it is for personal use only, it would be helpful if you could add a licence section to the description explaining the restrictions on use for this.

If you look in

If you look in App\AppInfo\appinfo.ini it has the licensing restrictions and stuff, but I will add a license page to the installer in dev test 2.

EULA vs Description

He meant the description on here.

If the app has an EULA as you install the local version, it should also be in the portable installer. Otherwise, it is not needed.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Won't launch. [solved]

Great, it's nice to have an alternative to Kompozer to check out. Unfortunately, this won't start up on my system (Windows 7 Home). An error message pops up:

"PageBreeze - Component 'DHTMLED.OCX' or one of its dependencies is not registered correctly: A file is missing or invalid".

(Yes, I did google this, but the results are somewhat confusing, so I was hoping someone here could advise the best way to repair this.)

Any hints welcome!

[update]
Sorry, I just noticed they have a workaround on their website:

Windows Vista or Windows 7
Please re-install the Microsoft DHTML editing control. This is included with PageBreeze and can be found in the \Program Files\PageBreeze directory. Look for this file: Dhtmled.msi. Double click to install.

Leaves behind many traces

The dependency on DHTMLED.OCX (see above) is bad enough, but still tolerable for my standards - I am using portable apps on my own computer most of the time. However, this also leaves behind many traces in %AppData%. It's one thing if a portable app depends on stuff being present on the computer; it's quite another if it leaves stuff behind anywhere outside its own folder - sorry.

hmm

Can you give me a list of the files it leaves behind? I messed with some settings and I never saw any files. What settings did you change?

@Pyromaniac

I ran this in a sandbox (using Sandboxie) and found those left-overs in several folders inside %AppData%; cookies, temp files and whatnot. I since deleted the sandbox folder and haven't kept a list, but those files were there for sure.

As for the settings, I don't recall changing any settings (or being offered the choice) - I simply ran the PA installer (or whatever it's called) inside the sandbox and launched and closed the program once. After that, the files were there.

I may repeat the procedure and post a list of files here some time, unfortunately, I don't have the time for it right now.

weird

I'm thinking this might be because of your OS, but I don't see a reason why that wouldn't happen in XP. Or perhaps its because you had to install that one program again. The only thing that it does with %APPDATA% is create a PageBreezePortableData folder where the launcher stores temporary info so it know what files from system32 (so it doesn't accidentally delete something important). The folder is removed after you exit pagebreeze.

The Temporary Internet Files are there because it uses IE to "Preview" the pages.

The files you see in the PageBreezePortableData folder should all be the name of .dll.data or .ocx.data.

The only thing I see thats being created/modified are in %WINDIR% (pagebreeze.ini and .prb) and .prb is deleted.

BTW I have sandboxie too and use to test all my apps

Is this your first time running it?

If not, did it crash earlier, or did you exit it improperly before this time?

It might be that one of the above happened and the launcher thinks it handled the file when it didn't.

Update

I checked out the launcher again, and it looks like there are several issues with it. It was also very inefficient. I'm going to try to clean it up and post an update by Sunday.

Create a new topic

If you're trying to release that as a dev test, please create a new topic for it yourself. Don't put links in the comments like this, as very few people will test it when it's just a link.

... and, before you may do so, it must be in PortableApps.com Format. Why on earth is it an MSI?
