There's no such thing as FF 3 or TB 3 in existence yet. There's a branch of code that will eventually become those, but there's no reason to use it yet.

FF Portable's newer launchers seem to be working quite well for me, so far. I'm typing this from 3.0a1 nightly on my memorex stick. But, John's probably right - it may be best to wait until it's a bit more stable, maybe when it's out of alpha at least.
Nope. The Aviary was the branch of development code where they forked the code from the main "trunk". It was basically the most stable development code that was being worked on for the 1.0.x stability & security releases. It's since but ended with the end of life of those 1.0.x releases.
Firefox 3's code name is Minefield.
If Gran Paradiso is the codename, what is Minefield?

So Minefield is the Build codename and Gran Paradiso is the branch codename?

I run the two on my laptop. They both update nightly like the 2.0 builds.

I'm just not sure if the source is on the FTP yet.
// edit
Ok I just realized they don't release the source for these yet since they are highly unstable. Thanks anyways John!
they're only for developers. It's not even for alpha end-user testers yet. This is pre-pre-pre alpha.

Or maybe at least wait until it's *AT* an alpha release. This is pre-pre-pre-alpha 1.

Is Firefox 3 called Minefield because it's so unstable?

It's a codename, just like Bon Echo is the codename for Firefox 2. Deer Park was the codename for Firefox 1.5. And I forget the 1.0 one.
I think 1.0 was Aviary.

Upon further research, the 1.0 codename was Phoenix.

Thanks Jonathan, I mistakenly relied upon my old internal search engine(my brain).

Minefield is the nickname/codename for the current build of Gran Paradiso. Gran Paradiso is the official codename for Firefox 3.
