Upgrading to Flash Player 10.1 Final in Portable Firefox

Hi guys I'm kinda new here so if this post belongs in some other forums please move it.

For the last few days I've been trying to find a way to upgrade my Flash Player to 10.1 Final. There's a bad security vulnerability that the update to 10.1 final would help protect me against.

Thought I would make a post about it detailing where to find them , mirrors and how to install them.

Seems I've been going about it wrong - instead of searching on programs to rip open the installer files for the goodies inside last night I tried searching to see if someone had a mirror of the libraries or plugin files you need to put in the plugins folder to get flash 10.1 working.

You can't repackage flash

You can't repackage flash binaries without permission from Adobe. I don't think you or David Dernoncourt are aware of this though. Please remove your links.

Ripping up the installer is actually really easy. 7-Zip Portable can do it with amazing ease. Just browse to it, right click on the file, and click on "Open Inside". Then extract it like you normally would to a regular zip.

Can't find suitable exe

I have been using the installation procedure the way you describe it (download exe, open with 7zip) for about a year now and it used to work perfectly, but now I can't find a suitable exe for the new flash version any more. When I open the install_flash_player.exe (I think it should be the correct version for Firefox, but I'm not sure) with 7zip it only contains the files

.data
.rdata
.reloc
.rsrc
.text
CERTIFICATE

What am I doing wrong? Is it the version for IE or the wrong version at all? Has Adobe changed the installer recently so the only way to get flash (portably) is to install it in a local copy of firefox and copy the necessary dlls, as it is described in some other threads here?

Yes I got the same. Adobe has changed the installer and the old extraction method no longer works.

Additionally

I find that even though the Adobe version test page shows the most current version on my local firefox install, there are no flash dlls in the plugin folder. I'm completely lost as to how to update my portable firefox flash player.

yes there is

but nobody will read it anyway.

So simply use local copy of FF and install flash from adobe site.

Then go system32/macromed/flash and copy the file NPSWF32.dll and paste it into the plugin folder of your portable FF.
(you can copy also Flash10c.ocx, flashplayer.xpt and others, but not essential)

That is all. This was allways so.

I used to just extract the Adobe installer and copy over the files. The local installation approach is doable, but there is a reason I'm using portable FF, I don't want a local copy!

ask adobe

why they distribute the flash with their downloader/installer and not in an easy extractable file any more.
If you want recent flash, you have to copy paste from local install.

you can try in your case

just use the portable FF, go to adobe site and install the flash. This will install the 'downloader' and then the flash itself, but the flash is then also in the sytem32/macromed/flash.
Then copy it to your portable one and uninstall the flash from the hard drive.

try under ff

put the file under firefox plugin directly, I have not found any problems with the recent flash and FFP at all, but someone claimed that it is better to have the plugin in the ff folder and not in the data folder. You can keep it both places.

''copy the file NPSWF32.dll

MEANT TO ASK OTTO, don't know why it's putting my Q here [u can delete the duplicate Q]

''copy the file NPSWF32.dll and paste it into the plugin folder of your portable FF''

I have 3 plugin folders/directories on my Flash STICK, so which plugin folder do I copy NPSWF32.dll to? And to clarify, OK just to copy JUST this 1 file? Then do I delete or is it uninstall Flash on the local HDD (but if I uninstall this NON-IE Flash version, what will happen for Flash with my local Chrome AND Safari browsers???)???:
1) X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\DefaultData
2) X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox
3) X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data

I think it's 3) , am i correct?

THANKS!

If someone replies to a reply, it comes before a new comment.

yes 3: is correct. 1) is the default profile which gets copied to /Data on first run.
If you need the local version, you shouldnt uninstall it.

3 is correct

as stated, but there seem to be few individuals who report the correct folder does not work and they copy it to 2) which will work as well.

The one under data folder will be also taken care of by the portable apps backup of data and profiles, while the one under ff not.

you can copy only the one file, the rest has not much of a functionality with ff anyway.

if you do not need the local ff version of flash, you can uninstall it and if needed install the IE version then again.

afaik, 2 versions of Flash: IE & NON-IE

so 1 part of my Qs is if I uninstall the NON-IE Flash, meaning what will happen to Flash functionality for my C:\ CHROME and SAFARI browsers?

I guess if I must answer myself, if I still need it for Chrome and Safari, then DON'T UNinstall it?!! Am I correct?

install again

if in doubt with the particular browser, the adobe installer will take care of the version.
