I dont understand this

I get the reason Y you would creat it.

What I understand about PA is that it is desibned to run on any computer without leaving infomation behind or being tracked by the computer. or have I missed something.

Yes PAM is ment to run anywhere.

This is not for every computer. This is only supposed to be used on your home or work computer that you use constantly. What this will do is auto detect the menu and launch it (in the future it will kill the autolaunch dialog). That way you don't have to do it yourself.

Props!!!

Autorun is completely disabled on Windows 7!! You can't customize it at all...
But your app works flawlessly on Windows 7!!! Thanks a bunch.

Brilliant

How'd I miss this fine example of ingenuity?

A future version ought to have no interface whatsoever and be available as an option under Options on the menu: you'd click something like "Extend Autorun to this PC" and it would place the program either directly in the startup folder (is that kosher?) or elsewhere and make a link in the startup folder. It would also show up in Add/Remove as well, to keep on the up-and-up. Also this would place a check mark by the option, as would the menu being called by the launcher. And repeating the steps would remove the launcher, the startup entry, the Add/Remove entry, and terminate the process.

This would also undermine Microsoft's pulling autorun out of Win7. Businesses and schools will probably not upgrade to Win7 so soon; many didn't upgrade to Vista, I don't think. Everywhere I've worked, including Fortune 500 companies, used a version of Windows that was a few major versions back. A biotech job I held in 2000-2001 (and lost shortly after XP came out; I bought it the day of and was laid off a month or so later - wouldn't have spent all that money at Best Buy had I known what was coming) had all kinds of NT 3.something and NT4 boxes; very few actually ran Win2k. Where I'm working now - WinXP SP2 - and they haven't even got SP3 yet. I guess it's a "YMMV" thing.

Hey John, I'm not sure if

Hey John,

I'm not sure if this was mentioned already, but could you also add an additional option in the option's menu to start portable apps at windows startup? I use portable apps as my main apps on my main hdd as well as a portable version on my flash drive.

Edit: Just realized Brilliant had mentioned it as well.

Workaround

Drag a shortcut to StartPortableApps.exe into your startup folder, and same with the detector thing.

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

I would like to avoid doing

I would like to avoid doing that altogether. Although it's a small request, it would make the software a tiny step further to the idea of portability.

No more?

Seems like this doesn't work any more - from the description it must be due to the menu starting exe having been renamed in the new platform. Any chance of an updated version?

in the meantime

in the meantime, you can renamed Start.exe to StartPortableApps.exe

I've done that and it seems to cause no problems with PortableApps and it lets the AutoRun/AutoPlay works again.

Yep

I've done the same. Works fine. Still, an update would be nice (once the beta is out of beta).

John,

Any chance of an update to this little program? A couple of years ago, you mentioned adding it to the platform.

Thanks

Also wondering if this fine launcher will be updated so we don't have to rename portable apps every time it updates... pUleeesssee?

custom location

i ran this but on my flash drive i keep my PAc in one folder all together on it so everything is organized. the drive is G:/Portable Apps/... then the documents, start.exe, autorun.ini, and PortableApps folder. is there a way in this to make it go to that location instead of where ever it goes by default?

thats not what i mean, for

thats not what i mean, for the PAc autorun i keep my portable apps folders and files in one folder on my drive so its organized. the platform works fine with the locations because thats where i installed it to. the problem is the autorun looks for the start.exe or whatever the name was when it was made right on the drive and not in a folder on the drive that you specify. i hope development starts on this again or at least make it part of the platform at the moment i have a shortcut on my desktop going to the location on my drive but id rather just have it start automatically when i plug my drive in, its not that big a deal so its not like its horrible if it doesnt happen but it would be nice if it happened.

Base Only

The autorun/autoplay feature will likely only support our own Start.exe in the root of the drive. Other locations or support for other EXEs would open it to abuse by viruses and malware.

0.2 Update

I've done a small 0.2 update to switch this utility from the old StartPortableApps.exe to the modern Start.exe. It also moves to a more modern Delphi compile and has an improved icon and digital signature. No other changes yet, just modernizing it a bit.

0.2 Update.

Hi! I don't mean to be nitpicky, and I love this utility. It is really awesome!

One thing that made me backtrack is your Version History list.

You put that you updated this software on 2014-6-16.

I think you meant 2014-5-16, as that was when you made your post.

Fixed, CopyPasta

It was a copy paste from the earlier version history entry and I forgot to change the month.

What do you think of, perhaps, publishing the current source?

John T. HallerWhen complete … it'll be open source under the GPL.

I know you it's not "complete" yet, but it's been 6 years since 0.1 was posted here, maybe if you published the source the community could take a whack at helping you to progress this toward completion.

Get To It

As I said, I'll get to it. It's a very minor feature.

Thanks for the feedback

No rush, just thought I'd point out that bit about it having been 6 years now.

Also, Thanks for the 0.2 update.

No Code Changes

I never got around to updating it and wasn't sure if I was even going to release it during that time. Then I decided I may as well add it to the platform proper as an installable hook to the local PC. I need to double-check the licensing of the example I based it off to be sure I can GPL it as well.
