What happens in a Windows 98 pc?

Can you manually run the u3Launcher or is it impossible to run any of the u3 apps? I am thinking of buying the u3 Avast Anti-virus, but if I could never run it on Windows 98, I might not bother...

Any ideas?

Incompatible

U3 works with Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows XP.

U3 is incompatible with Windows 95/98/Me, Wine within Linux and it doesn't yet work with Vista.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

That's not much is it!

I am surprised at how little it does work - I guess using standard portable apps instead is the way to go, and just use u3 shortcuts to them...

Thanks

How little?

I'm not sure how you mean this.

It works with every version of Windows released in the last 6 years, and it's only a year old. To expect them to support operating systems that even micrsoft no longer supports is asking a lot. As far as Vista is concerned, it was still a twinkle in Bill Gates eyes when U3 was released and I hear that it will work with Vista when a new version of the Launch Pad is released, following the release of Vista of course.

Don't get me wrong, I feel for you. I thought I was the last great user of Windows 98 (not even SE mind you) but when McAfee announced they were pulling support I had no choice. I'm not worried about Vista as I wont touch it till the release of SP1.

I think the U3 platform is pretty good myself. We just need to remember that it was designed for modern windows machines.

Yeah, I guess so - I don't

Yeah, I guess so - I don't actually have a pre WinXP PC, but I am going to help fix a friends, and wanted to make sure I had the relevant tools on my drive - no good having Avast, if I can't run it!

How is ClamWin btw? I normally use AVG on my main PCs, but wondered how good it is in comparison with Avast - Avast seems to protect the drive all the time - does this make a difference or is it just marketing bs? lol

Not Sure How to answer

I have ClamWinPortable on my drives and keep it updated but have never had occasion to "really" use it. I've tested it about twice a month to look for false positives. It takes a "REALLY" long time, but if you think the machine in question is infected better safe than sorry.

as far as:
"Avast seems to protect the drive all the time - does this make a difference or is it just marketing bs?"
I assume you mean the PC version which I believe offers real time (always on, background) protection, which is always better than an after the fact, on demand scan. I don't know much about AVG. It is always harder to get rid of a virus than to stop it in the first place. This of course depends on the products in question. I swear by McAfee myself to my RTP, but I have Avast and Clamwin on my Flash just in case.

Not Sure of the question?

Are you asking for the source?
Are you asking for a translation?
Are you asking who told me this is true?

The source is a paraphase of a quote I found on a security website.
I believe he got it, in english, from Intel co-founder Andy Grove.

The website authors translation was "only the paranoid survive" but paranoid was not translated.
This is what I believe to be a better translation as the word paranoid does not exist in latin. It means "Only the most suspicious survive" I figure "most suspicious=paranoid" (I posted it at a latin translation site for help, my latin is not that good).

I don't know if it is in fact true, but in the net/computer world today it seems like a good way to think about it.

Anyway, it, and Geek w/o Portfolio, have become my mottos.

How dare you call me paranoid!,
Who are you anyway?!,
Oh, Hi Mom !

LOL!

I knew it was Latin when I saw it.
Like I say: "Google is your friend." -> Result
I was being paranoid/most suspicious. Wink

Google???

Google ???

I use it rarely, don't trust "them" much either, Tantum suspiciosissimi supersunt,
I have used Yahoo since before I can remember. The day I don't THEM is the day I pull my modem out of my machine.

But what was the point of your question?
"Who told you?!"
I thought for a moment you might be "the source", either the security website guy or Andy Grove !!! Don't want to get into any copyright concerns here you know. After all, I don't even get credit for the corrected Latin, I found it else where.

Lurking_Biohazard, and where does that come from???

You are kidding, right?

Methinks you are over analyzing it! I liked it and made a comment. As far as Yahoo/Google - huh? It is a search engine for crying out loud! Replace "Google" with whatever search engine you prefer, like most people do. The missed point was that I looked it up(and found only you). It ("who told you") was a joke, which is not funny at all now from trying to explain the punchline...

As far as me - I am what I am.

Yes, I'm Kidding

Yes, I am Kidding!

I hate Google and Flash and pick on them every chance I get.

And I think it would be fun if "the author" found me, like you did, and said, jokingly, "Hey I want royalties"!

And I've seen your name before and think it's just way too cool.

Lurking_Biohazard, funnnnny
