First: we need a forum section for this great browser which will take over the market in time.
Second: you releases the 466.0 dev version to Sourceforge but didn't announce it in front page/feed, why ?
not everyone uses the Updater/Menu.
thanks for your efforts.
We're moving away from individual forums for apps. And honestly, Chrome is far less popular than Firefox.
The dev release is a dev release. It's not even a beta and should absolutely not be used as a primary browser. It's for messing about with. It's not important enough for release announcements on its own and, thus, we won't be promoting it with its own front-page announcements, so normally we only update it when we do a stable or beta release of chrome. I decided to update it on my own and now, with the updater, users can find out about it. So, the choice is, update it semi-regularly (note: we do not make a point to update to each release) and place it on the page and let updater users automatically get it... or just update it when we do a stable/beta release.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
could you at-least release a note "Chrome 466.0 dev released" to the FEED ?
I use it as primary browser and it's actually more solid than this Building I work in
and Chrome will be more popular than FF, in time.
did you know that with Chrome you can install (for example) 50 Extensions, update them, uninstall 20 of them then install another 70 and update them all this without restarting the browser, not even ONCE !
you can have Private window AND normal window AT THE SAME TIME ? FF can's
All extensions auto-update without bugging you, I can just launch the browser and start working knowing that everything is up to date. (portable doesn't auto-update the browser yet)
One address bar for everything: Address, seaching(google, bookmarks and history) and accessing advanced settings (about:plugins)
and it's sexy, unlike FF which is basically a pimped IE.
[the above doesn't take into account the upcoming FF 4.0] I tested it, it still has the stup*d separate search bar, why would I need a separate search bar? you already copied Chrome with your "Tabs On Top" which by-the-way are called just *Tabs* why not copy also the One-bar-for-everything ?
as soon as more people discover Chrome FF will die. there will still be the corporate world [stone age]
(no offence to FF users) I think everyone should have a choice, I use Opera myself, mostly on mobile.

I've recently migrated to Chrome as my primary browser as it seems faster at loading web apps.
Normally I ignore comments like this as they often lead to flames but i respect your opinion from those I've read in the past (on email apps and encryption I believe) and would like to some more details on what you've said.
I don't know enough to understand the pki key point or the use IE directly point but if you could elaborate, this former Firefox die hard would appreciate it.
PS: I still use Firefox for a lot of stuff. Primarily functionality offered by it's extensions, such as DownloadThemAll! and Video DownloadHelper.
Until Chrome can offer equivalent or superior applications that perform these functions, I'll never say it's the better browser. It just executes JavaScript at a faster rate.

I added a warning to the Google Chrome Portable homepage detailing this issue. Basically, if you need to use your own private certificates, do not use Google Chrome Portable.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Unfortunately it goes beyond my current understanding. However with that in mind I think the issue is one that will not apply to my current use as I've never had my own security certificate.
Hopefully the JaegarMonkey JS engine Mozilla is developing for FF4 will beat or closely enough match the Chrome engine so that i can switch back. Especially for my poor little EeePC 701

You don't know you can search from the address bar in Firefox? IE6 does it too.
that's my point, FF can search from add bar what's the need of a search bar?
And Chrom is still in development and at some point it will get it's own proxy rettings that I don't use.
Not trying to convince, I just bet that C market sh will keep growing while IE and FF will slide while more people discover what 'browser' means. Most people don't know wt a B is so they use whatever they find.
Sometimes making love is just not enough, you have to step it up!
The search bar allows one to change which search engine you want to search with. It's the only feature I miss from switching from FF to Seamonkey. That way, I wouldn't have to open up a tab to go to Wikipedia's website every time I wanted to look something up.

You can remove the search box in FF. Then it's just like Chrome
One downside to Google Chrome is that Google uses it to track your every bowel movement. Not something I really care to share.
I doubt Chrome is going to the be the next president of the United States. Many people predicted that Firefox would cause the death of all other browsers ever and that didn't happen. I.E. as far as I know is still the most "popular" browser. I don't see Chrome as being that radical that it will revolutionize browsing over-night. It may catch up to and even overtake FF in market-share but I doubt it will make other browsers go away. And I'm also doubtful it will be the market leader.
Chrome isn't a bad browser, it's hard to judge right now since it still is in relative infancy compared with competitors such as FF And IE. I definitely agree that it's JavaScript engine seems to be pretty slick, and compares more than favorably with other popular browsers. It certainly has it's pluses but I'm not ready to deny the existence of other good browsers just yet.
"One downside to Google Chrome is that Google uses it to track your every bowel movement."
so?, there are other millions of users that uses Chrome, why do you thing google got their eyes on you ?
I read news, mail(college, friends..) and watch youtube and download software, nothing interesting really.
unless you are a spy or trying to lead a revolution against your country, you shouldn't be worried.
you can get all the good of Chromium without the tracking with Comodo Dragon or Iron.
but these don't have a update feature which is the fundamental feature of Chrome.

There is a difference. With the separate search field, you get the handy dropdown offering the rest of your search and suggested other searches as you type. The problem with combining that into the main URL bar is that every character of every URL you type is sent along to Google. Not just searches that you intend to be. This can be an issue if you are visiting say a non-public or development version of a site you're working on. Will that site be indexed and made public?
There are many legitimate privacy concerns with respect to the browser. Many people don't care about them. Many do. And Google Chrome is the only major browser that has this potential privacy issue.
If Google Chrome became the dominant browser, it would be a very bad thing for the internet. Just as when IE was the dominant browser. Having one dominant browser is a very bad thing because it encourages stagnation, proprietary markup that isn't cross-browser, developers coding only to one specific browser, etc.
We get that you *REALLY, REALLY* like Chrome, but that doesn't mean you need to troll and poo-poo other browsers that people like for one reason or another that you may not agree with (better extensibility, fully open source, better privacy, etc, etc).
So, let's drop the fanboy arguments please. You can continue to use Chrome. I'll continue to use Firefox. Someone else will continue to use Opera. And someone else will continue to use Lynx. And we'll all be happy with our own choices and secure in the knowledge that we're right and everyone who disagrees with us is wrong

Could you please update Chrome dev to 6.0.472.0? I understand it's only a dev release and not intended as a main browser (not that that stops me--I've been using Win7 as my primary OS since the first beta for example), but right now 6.0.466 has a major showstopper: Any file larger than 40MB fails to download completely.
As has been stated numerous times, it is a dev release. It will be updated as time permits. It is not even a beta and is not meant to be used as a daily browser. It is roughly equivalent to Firefox's nightly builds, except that we have to manually update it every single time. You and others know this from other threads. In fact, the whole reason you are asking for an update is because there's a major show-stopper bug in it, because it's a dev version. There will continue to be showstoppers like this because it's not even beta quality.
Honestly, if we're going to keep getting complaints about it being outdated, perhaps we should just ditch it entirely and stick to Stable and Beta as we do with all other apps. You're welcome to use it as your primary browser, but in return you will have to accept the fact that it will not perform as a primary browser (showstopper bugs will occur on different builds) or be supported as one (portable updated same day).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I'm of the opinion that if you don't use something the same way you'd use a "released" app, you'll never find the bugs that matter. Sure, you might find some bugs, but if you're just "playing around" with it instead of actually using it, you're not going to find the true showstoppers.
Also Chrome's dev releases are roughly the same quality as anyone else's betas, and their beta releases are more like RCs than anything. Is it any wonder people treat a Chrome dev release the same as a beta?
It's your choice. There are lots of people that use the Firefox nightly builds as their primary browser as well. But, like Chrome, they accept the fact that there will be occasional showstopper bugs and the like. It's labeled Dev because it's not even beta quality. That means you have to accept certain tradeoffs (showstoppers, slower updates of the portable version). If you don't like those tradeoffs, please switch back to using stable, which is intended for everyday use.
Remember, we have limited development time. It's better used packaging supported, stable apps that lots of people use than a pre-beta that only a handful of people use. The dev version will be updated, but only after everything else. Which is exactly as it should be.
UPDATE: I checked and we have a few more users than expected. But still dwarfed by stable releases. I'll be updating it, as mentioned, but not as critically as stable releases. Keep in mind that it will be out of date a GOOD PERCENTAGE of the time as Dev releases are made WEEKLY. Yes, weekly. So giving that there will be up to a few days wait on each, it'll be out of date here and there. Since the delay will usually be 1 to 3 days, you'll have to put up with the bugs about the same amount of time as everyone else just shifted a few days.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Thanks for the good news, I would use Stable but it can't sync everything yet.
Until stable get's all features I need I'm on dev, and I actually report bugs and watch them get fixed the next week.
I understand this is not a top priority and you should finalize other stable apps, so thank you for the intention to update this, even if delayed a few days.
You're awesome! So it's possible.
Maybe it's a good time to open a forum for Chrome instead of cluttering this section?
Sometimes making love is just not enough, you have to step it up!
Once again, we're moving away from individual forums. And chrome has far less posts and is far less popular than our major apps like Firefox. It'll be in the upcoming "Internet Apps Support" forum.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I just wondered if it would be possible to pass chrome command line options to the chrome portable? I ask because I would like to add a socks proxy server to Chrome like I do in Firefox without having to change the computers proxy settings.
I tried just adding the command line switch to the appinfo.txt:
[Control]
Icons=1
Start=GoogleChromePortable.exe --proxy-server="x.x.x.x:xxxxx"
This did not work for me. Is this possible, or would I have to compile the chrome source myself?
thanks.
You need to use GoogleChromePortable.ini just like all our other apps. Example of it and a readme in Other\Source. You should never edit the appinfo.ini to change settings and the like.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
You'll be happy to know that I updated Chrome Dev moments ago.

thanks, appreciate your effort.
Will be testing this candy tonight (in 40min)
Google announced they are speeding up the release cycle for the Stable channel, this is one of the factors that made me choose C over other Bs: Rapid updates.
You will have to keep up
Sometimes making love is just not enough, you have to step it up!
i already have downloaded GoogleChrome Portable and have been using it for a long time now but i want to update it to the latest version of it that is out there. can anybody help me out on how to specifically do this? please?
Thanks
Michael
I already had the portableapps.com version of 5.0.375.55 installed on my PC. When 5.0.375.125 became available from here, I just downloaded it and installed it as if were a totally new app. The installation process automatically took care of everything and I got the .125 in place of the .55. Really simple. No catch. All my settings, etc. remained intact.
As a caution, one can back up this folder:
E:\PortableApps\GoogleChromePortable\Data\profile (I have my portableapps.com apps on the E drive).
Why GC dev is not yet updated to 7.0.503.0?
-Existential Intelligence
Maybe because it hasn't been released yet?
The Dev channel has been updated to 7.0.503.0 for Windows, Mac and Chrome Frame; 7.0.503.1 for Linux. Some of the updates:...
http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/ dated August 25, 2010.
Anyway, I still feel that if there's a constraint on resources, it would be unfair to expect betas and dev versions in portable form.
Hi,
The guys here managed to include a cool updater: [link to illegal software removed by mod JTH]
I would use this portable version IF they would have handled the temp files correctly. Sadly they will store them under c:/user/blablabla
Maybe you can recreate the updater for the real thing?
We have an updater included with the 2.0 Beta 5 release of the PA.c Platform that will update Chrome (and all your other software) as we release new versions. We're having a temporary delay while the new PA.c Installer is finished for doing releases at this moment, though.
I removed your link as they ultimately link to an illegal package of Chrome. The same guy illegally packages other software like Firefox, too.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Thanks for your fast reply!
Illegal? Why?
Hmmm...I don't use the Platform 2.0 software, but only individual software. Could you integrate an updater there as well?
Are there easy instructions somewhere on how to update the Dev version so others could help w/ the load and keep it updated more frequently?
