New system works really well.
I was wondering though, now I no longer need to keep the original exe's on the hard drive (even just for visual comparison) could the updater do this itself, ie show both the current version available as well as what is installed?
Also, would someone know a way to make Mozilla run from location so I don't need to put the extractors on my system at all?

Use the OpenDownload extension for Firefox, available here, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10902/
It adds a Run button to the download window as well as an option to select an action for a downloaded file.
As for the comparison of installed and available files, John has said he will make this available in the final release.

Glad there will be the comparison available, since I can doubly leave the original .exe files on the website where they belong.
The updater I find works very well, even if beta but it does take some time which is ok for now.
Also, no information on what it is doing is available, as well as pause/resume like one would expect of a professional package.
Programs that incur frequent updates will really benefit from this technology I believe and good on the community for making it happen.
As for the firefox extension, I guess I must pass in the interests of so-called *safety* so I hope mozdev will wake up and realize it makes us no safer to not allow open from the web, in fact restore session after clear cache would have to be one of the most unsafe aspects of mozilla based browsers.

Sweet, i also wanted to see a comparison of installed version alongside what was current. In contrast to Scant, i've always kept a copy of the current installer for each app i use in an install files folder on my drive, because a) I use a large capacity portable hdd, and b) I often want to share apps, or install them where downloading would not be an option. It's also somewhat of a habit i developed as part of a backup plan to always have an install files folder for any apps i use, instead of just installing and deleting.
What i'd like to see is the ability to select a download folder for the updater to put install files in and the ability to choose whether the updater keeps them or installs and deletes like it appears to do at the moment. Also, where does it actually download to? What happens if there is not enough space at that location? The ability to select a location would give greater flexibility.

The ability to compare versions will be an advanced option shortly. It already has the ability to show them, it just doesn't because it's simply 'noise' to most users that complicates the interface (which is why Firefox and other apps also don't show the current version when they let you know there is an update). However, as some users want that, we'll let them enable it.
The ability to keep the last version of each app installed on your portable device is also coming as an advanced option. In that case, you can define a download directory and whether or not to keep the installer around. The updater will automatically delete the old installer version and keep the new one (otherwise you'd have to manage it yourself and you'd eventually run out of space). Currently, the updater uses the TEMP directory on the local PC as this makes the most sense (most users use flash drives and it will kill performance in all apps while you download).
