Application: Foxit Reader
Category: Office
License: Freeware
Language: Multilingual
Description: Foxit Reader is a small, fast and feature rich PDF viewer which allows you to open, view and print any PDF file.

Download Foxit Reader Portable 4.3.1.0218 Pre-Release 1 [6MB download / 18MB installed]
(MD5: 582d54820bfcd5175d8518ec838ee392)

Release Notes:

4.3.1.0218 Pre-Release 1 (2011-03-05):

  • Foxit Reader has been updated 4.3.1.0218.
  • Improved drive/path switching method.
  • Fixed no splash/hourglass issue.
  • I can only see XP, Vista & 7 listed in system requirements on the main page so shouldn't MinOS=XP be in? Then again, I haven't tried it. Also, as minimum OS seems to be XP SP2, is there any support for service pack in PAL?
  • P.S. Can anybody recommend a good, free file hosting service?

4.3.1.0118 Pre-Release 1 (2011-01-30):

  • Foxit Reader has been updated 4.3.1.0118.
  • Re-did language switching as recommended.

4.3.0.1110 Development Test 2 (2010-11-24):

  • Added MinOS=XP.

4.3.0.1110 Development Test 1 (2010-11-17):

  • Foxit Reader has been updated to 4.3.0.1110.
  • Converted to PAL.
  • Re: the code that was added by JTH to the original launcher. I have never been able to reproduce the problem that it solves so I've included it here as (the original) custom code. If anyone wants to give me the relevant (tested) PAL INI entries I will add them.
  • The Foxit browser plugin is now included by default. It's an ActiveX Control in the plugins folder but, as this is going to require registering/unregistering (which I don't believe is possible yet), it's not going to work in a portable situation. I'm leaving the file in for the moment (in case anyone wants to test). I think :-)
  • Free Critical Add-ons preserved in "installer.ini".
  • This is much more of a "test" version than the ones I've previously posted here so I don't recommend blindly upgrading without making a backup first.

4.1.1.0805 Development Test 1 (2010-08-09):

  • Foxit Reader has been updated to 4.1.1.0805.

4.1.0.0726 Development Test 1 (2010-08-05):

  • Foxit Reader has been updated to 4.1.0.0726.
  • Languages section removed from "installer.ini" (installer now supports all PA.c languages).

4.0.0.0619 Development Test 1 (2010-06-30):

  • Foxit Reader has been updated to 4.0.0.0619.
  • The app now creates "%APPDATA%\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader" but, as it's always empty (so far), I'm not saving it back to "Data\settings". Maybe this is a bug? The local folder is backed up & restored though.

3.3.1.0518 Development Test 1 (2010-05-22):

  • Foxit Reader has been updated to 3.3.1.0518.

3.3.0.0430 Development Test 2 (2010-05-06):

  • App and languages now included. There are five languages selectable in the app which I can't find for download. They are: Galician, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian and Thai.
  • Splash is off.

3.3.0.0430 Development Test 1 (2010-05-06): Initial release

  • Added multilingual support. I haven't provided any language files as I'm not sure I'm allowed to include them (or the app?) so you'll have to downloaded a few to test (link in the help file). If John has permission to bundle them, I can add an [OptionalComponents] section to the installer. Language files are 7MB in total.
  • Improved check for InitialOpenDir. If "X:\Documents" doesn't exist, it'll open at the root of the drive.
  • Added SecondaryLaunch check.
  • Removed app directory, program executable and settings directory INI options.
  • Fixed links in help, readme & appinfo.
  • Fixed hourglass on launch. Not evident on this dev test as it has to use a splash. The splash time can be set to 0 on the release and "FoxitReaderPortable.jpg" left in place. Obviously the final JPG shouldn't be the dev splash so I suggest replacing it with this. Or maybe just not including it after re-compiling? I don't know whether that's the 'done thing' though...
  • Yes, ads are in but the Ask icon is fixed. Switch it back on in the options (!)

Tested with:
XP Home SP3 (Admin)

Based On...

Is this based on my latest one from the current release?

Is ask enabled by default on a local install?

We have permission from the publisher to repackage, so we can include the language files as well.

Yes No Good

Based on 3.2.1 portable, downloaded yesterday.

The Ask search icon is disabled by default in the app now. The Ask toolbar is an option with their installer package so I guess it's not an issue here. I haven't changed any of the default settings.

OK, languages (and app) are included now.

3.3.1 is out

FYI: 3.3.1 was released with an important security update that fixes a possible hacker hole used to dupe users.

Static analysis

I haven't yet run it. This is the static analysis; analysis of how well it functions will come later (probably tomorrow).

  • App\AppInfo\Launcher\FoxitReaderPortable.ini: move FileWrite3 up above DirectoriesMove to be with the other FileWriteN sections (I had to find something ;-)). Good use of new PAL 2.1 features Smile
  • If those are all the languages possible, which I presume they are, it'd be much neater using a Base of %PortableApps.comLocaleName% rather than %PortableApps.comLocaleID%. Then the comments would become the keys of the line below (with three modifications, Chinese-Simplified, Chinese-Traditional and Portuguese Brazilian -> SimpChinese, TradChinese, PortugueseBR).
  • App\AppInfo\installer.ini: PreserveFile1=App\Foxit Reader\lang_*.xml? Is that in case they add another language which isn't bundled? (The auto upgrade will install languages if the previous installation had languages.)
  • How about App\AppInfo\appicon_128.png?
  • Custom code: looks good; purely for neatness, I'd recommend replacing
    ${registry::KeyExists} "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pdf" $R0
    ${If} $R0 == "0"

    (etc.) with

    ${If} ${RegistryKeyExists} "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pdf"

(RegistryKeyExists is a PAL addition, defined in Segments\Registry.nsh.)

I'm also not quite sure why you use a variable $Usertype. Just use $0.

  • help.html: the empty section "Foxit Reader Portable-Specific Issues" should be removed.
  • A couple of elements are not as they are in the PAL Application Template; App\readme.txt is missing and Other\Source\AppNamePortable.ini has been renamed to FoxitReaderPortable.ini (read Readme.txt).

(In other words, only minor issues that don't really matter.)

Runs well

I've run this now, works well, can't find any issues. Ready to go, I believe.
