unable to download mail from gmail

Today, before downloading my mail, I upgraded to TB 3.1.2. I'm using the PA Apps Platform 2.0 Beta, so I used the Update function. After updating, I cannot access my Gmail account. Now, I'm not sure if it's a TB issue, a Gmail issue. or what. As soon as TB loaded, a window at the bottom of the screen came up saying "Failed to connect to server pop.googlemail.com". I ping the server and get no response, though googlemail.com DOES respond. This is the same configuration I've used for over a year. I checked Gmail's settings page, where it indicates the correct server is pop.gmail.com. So, I changed the setting to pop.gmail.com, and I DID download messages...SENT messages. Nothing from my INBOX, which when I access Gmail via Firefox it shows 50 messages, none of which have downloaded to my indox in TB. I switched back to pop.googlemail.com, and still nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

ping?

you stated that the server did not respond to ping, well ping responses can be blocked, but are not on gmail, so I assume it was an temporary failure either at gmail side or dns update or similar.
At present gmail and googlemail both resolve and respond to ping on my side here (in CH)

Well, it was

Well, it was pop.googlemail.com that didn't respond. Apparently, they have made a change in their POP services, and instead of using pop.googlemail.com users have to change to pop.gmail.com. I found a number of users in the Gmail help forums complaining about this. Also, users using imap.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com are having to switch to imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com. Not surprisingly, nothing from any Gmail employees. I was finally able to download using this new configuration, but it seems a lot slower.
