Firefox not starting on Windows 7?

Is that a known problem?

Sometimes when I start Windows 7 up, and then start FFPortable, the window never appears - according to the task manager the portable and FF are running - but window never appears.??

Multiple Reasons

There are multiple reasons for this, none due to it being the portable package nor to running on Windows 7. Generally it is misbehaving extensions. In which case you should start in safe mode and figure out which ones. Only install extensions and add-ons from addons.mozilla.org.

There are additional reasons given in a Google search or a search of mozilla's knowledgebase.

Aha. Ok then.

Its just odd, usually its a cycle of:
1. Start
2. Nothing
3. Task kil.

Repeat from 1 - after doing that 10-20 times it starts (so far).

But as long as it starts eventually I suppose.

FWIW

I use Firefox 3.6.8 on Windows 7 and it starts every time without issue. The only time I've ever had to kill it in the recent past was a couple of versions ago, when they started messing around with Flash crash prevention or something, and it seemed to make the browser more unstable but that seems to have been resolved in the most recent versions.

So, fix it

As mentioned, the problem is due to your specific profile (extensions, etc), not a general Firefox, Firefox Portable or Windows 7 issue. So, you should take the time to fix it. Start in safe mode, disable everything, then re-enable bits at a time to determine what is the problematic extension. It's not something we can do for you.

Yes I heard your opinion the

Yes I heard your opinion the first time. And as mentioned sometimes the program starts and sometimes it doesn't - disabling extension isn't required to get this duality - and actually disabling them wouldn't prove anything since sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't.

thunderbird

I've had that happen sometimes with thunderbird too, it was the extentions.

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

Window lost outside the screen perhaps?

Could it be one of those cases where the Firefox window is defined with a 0-pixel size or is totally out of screen?

To solve that issue (if that's the case), shift-right-click on the icon in the task bar. You will then have the traditional pre-Windows-7 menu, with Restore, move, resize, minimize, maximize and close. Try to maximize and see what happens.

At last resort, open Firefox Portable (after 10-20 trials, it seems); export your bookmarks and other important data, then trash the entire "Firefox Portable" folder from your USB Key (actually, copy it somewhere else just in case). Download a new version and configure anew, then import back your bookmarks. That way, you will have a new application and a new profile.
