A special build of OpenOffice, called OpenOffice4kids, is now available. It's a simplified version of OpenOffice, with more accessible icons, etc., designed to help kids getting involved in OpenOffice.
I downloaded the app, and installed it into a folder with my other portable apps. The OO4Kids folder contains a single executable, from which the components are opened.
When I refresh my app icons, I get all the individual OpenOffice4Kids pieces -- word processing, etc. -- but clicking on those icons will not open any of the apps. When I look in my file manager and find the OpenOffice4Kids executable, and click on it, I get the opening screen and it lets me create documents, etc.
What's happening here? I'm not sure I've explained it properly. I'll supply more info as it's asked.
Thanks.
OOo4Kids (the official name as they can't legally use OpenOffice.org in the name) is an unofficial build of OO.o. There is no official portable version either here nor there. The last one I saw of it was buggy and used a very outdated modded version of our OO.o Portable launcher that didn't work right. To my knowledge, OOo4Kids doesn't seem to be developed or supported any longer.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Strange. They released a final version 1.0 just a few weeks ago. I think someone is still working on it.
Thanks for the insights. It really is a good project. I hope someone picks it up.
