Works Well - Minor Issue

The portable version works as it should with one exception. The app gives the user the opportunity to select the database file location via menu choice Tools:Options:Database. No matter what the user enters into the database file location field, the portable version ignores the choice and uses the default portable data directory. Is this a show stopper? No, just a minor wrinkle. It might be nice if it could be fixed. Personally, I like to keep all of my various data files on the USB key in a directory structure that suits me.

I have not taken a regshot, but the launcher code looks fine. I have imported a couple of thousand Outlook contact records with no problems whatsoever.

This is a very nice piece of work, and it will be interesting to see how forum members like this app, despite its funny old GUI. It works very well.

Regards,

Kim

Yeah, I'm aware of that

Yeah, I'm aware of that issue. Another of my apps (Mednafen Portable) has the same problem, which is caused by the current inability to write a setting on first run only (so I have to write the setting on every run).
PAL will eventually support writing settings on first run only, IIRC, and I'll be able to correct the issue then.

Thanks for the feedback!

Just wondering

would it not be possible to handle this with a template file in the default data directory.

That way you could put the setting you want to write in that, and it would only be copied over on first run.

Maybe

I thought I tried that already, but maybe not. I'll have another look and see what I can do.

UPDATE: I may have found a way to make this work. Please try my tentative Development Test 2 and see if that works better.

Thanks!

This is by design

It is by design for the portable OC to use only one database, the default one on the portable drive. The database tab in the Options is NOT for you to define the location of the database but only the the location of linked files, which you might or might not use. OC locate the database location through the start-in directory of program shortcut.

However, for portable apps, you are not going to use program shortcuts, since the mapping drive might be changing. So, portable OC use the data directory under the program directory.

If you desire to use the portable OC to work on a working directory rather than the default one, you may run command line in Command Prompt:
ProtableDriveLetter:\OCLocation\OpenContacts.exe changedir YourWorkingDirectoryWithProperDriveLetter
