Registry Key Left

There is a registry key left at HKLM\SOFTWARE\IObit\IObit Security 360.
There is also a folder with some files left behind that needs to be taken care of at C:\ProgramData\IObit. This is %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\IObit

ok

Thanks. I'll look into it. But I'm not sure how PAL will handle a regkey within a regkey that might not have previously existed, though.

Easy

PAL won't have an issue with that.

This is from memory, so it may need some tweaking, but I think it's OK. You may also need to re-run the launcher generator, since I'm pretty sure Registry support is added at compile time.

[Activate]
Registry = true

[RegistryKeys]
IOBit=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\IOBit\IOBit Security 360

[RegistryCleanupIfEmpty]
1=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\IOBit

ah, ok

thanks.

I probably won't be able to release a dev test 2 of the app until Sunday, though.

Correct

Your code there is correct.

A minor point on INI style, Registry = true should be Registry=true. It's neater that way.

Currently registry support is not added at compile time, only XML support. However that may well change for 2.1 or a later release. Don't worry though, if it is done like that it will scan for usage of it and warn you that you need to recompile with registry support (which would be more useful than the current "fail silently" when [Activate]:Registry isn't set). XML already does that.

Also a point on ALLUSERSPROFILE; that string is a bit fiddly. On 2000/XP, you want C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data whereas on Vista/7 you want C:\ProgramData. However, ALLUSERSPROFILE on 2000/XP points to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users. The solution is for me to add a new munged environment variable ALLUSERSAPPDATA which copes with either system, but I haven't done that yet. (I'll see if I can do it today.)

ah yes

could you also add some support for multiple operating systems?

I was surprised when I found out the data was in %ALLUSERSPROFILE% because of what you stated above. (I'm on XP and found data in %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\IObit\IObit Security 360 [see custom code to see what I tried to do about it... it looks like it didn't work :(])

I was instead going to just do the whole app in NSIS (without PAL) because that way I can detect OSs.

But if you add that functionality, then I'll wait for your release.

If you get the current hg tip (zip), you'll be able to use the ALLUSERSAPPDATA environment variable. That fixes that issue.

Seems good.

Updated the virus database, close the app then did a search in the registry and on c:\ for "iobit" and only MUI and prefetch in results.

Good work Pyro and great work IOBit Smile

Ask No Questions...

You didn't answer my question! Blum And it was a serious question. Is this a viable, portable replacement for MBAM?

I got MBAM Portable yesterday

It seems like in EVERY computer-related magazine I read, I see an ad for Malwarbytes. So I was like "ok, lets try this sucker out". For all the ads it had, I was unimpressed. I thought it would be this really huge program with a crapload of features.

Its only 8 MB.

What?

Not that bigger means better, but if bigger means more chances of getting that bad program off your PC, than it looks like your 3 times more likely to catch malware with IS 360. Hence they can rename Malwarebytes to Malwarebytes 120 Blum

*If* the above was true.

Size isn't everything

I understand where you're coming from, I'm just a big fan of MBAM. It has succeeded in cleaning up computers where other products have failed, so It's kind of my new benchmark. I suppose it doesn't hurt have multiple tools to fall back on, just like how I always have an AV product installed but I carry around ClamWinPortable, just in case!

I'm not that big a fan of ClamWin

I mean, something is better than nothing, and its definetly not the worst AV out there (not by a long shot), but I hate that it is very slow at scanning files, and that by default it doesn't quaranteen or even delete files. It just tells you that you got something bad (if you do) and that you should do something about it.

Its like a cop sent to a bank robbery, and instead of shooting the robber or arresting him, he just says to the customers "be careful you guys, that guy right there is robbing this bank".

Of course you can tell the cop to stop him, but its kinda stupid that he doesn't do it already.

You see what I'm saying?

Its especially difficult when trying to get your Computer-challenged friend to remove a virus with ClamWin Portable, when you have to tell him to go through a series of (seemingly) complex menus to get ClamWin to stop the virus.

I haven't tried out IS360 very much, so I can't say much about it except that it looks really cool.

Oh

I was hoping it was a legit offering. I recall there was some cruft left behind by the PAZ version the one time I tried it ages back.

Just Kidding

I was just joking, I don't know if MBAM is legit or not. I'm not even sure what the license is... free for personal/educational use I assume.

nope

not legit.

I just tried it because I was curious about what all the hype was about. I normally don't get illegal software for obvious reasons, unless I need it for school or something (e.g. Graphical Analysis).

OS: MS Windows Vista SP2 32bit
Have or had app installed locally?: No.
Did a previous dev build work?: This is my first time using IObit Security 360 Portable

are you on admin?

I think it may be that UAC stuff. I added RunAsAdmin=try in the launcher. So if this is the case, try updating to dev test 2 and run it as an administrator and see if that works.

UAC

I updated to dev test 2 and UAC (run as admin) seemed to be what was causing it.
I removed "RunAsAdmin=try" from the launcher.ini and the app failed to launch.

I am on an administrator account, but UAC is enabled. When UAC is enabled you are required to manually select "Run as Administrator" on applications that do not require/ask administrative privileges. Applications that do require administrative privileges activate UAC/consent.exe prompting you if you would like to allow the application to be run as an administrator.

is360.exe requires administrator privileges, so I would think the launcher would need to make sure to require it too.
(I'm sure you knew all this already.)

Thanks for fixing it Smile

Didn't know

My only computer is my 10 year old XP (SP3) and the only other computers I use for testing are the ones at the library which are albeit brand new, but also run XP SP3.

I occasionally run apps that seem like they'd need admin rights on an account on my computer with limited rights, just to see, but that doesn't always show me (obviously) what will and won't work without admin rights.

I looked into getting UAC onto my laptop, but it was having some issues so I decided to simply hope enthusiastic testers like yourself would be kind enough to report of said issues Wink

PAL 2.1

PAL 2.1 has the ability built-in to always require admin in the EXE itself (it sets the launcher to require admin at the OS level). It's for apps that require it but the normal selection in the launcher doesn't work. It prompts correctly on Vista/7 and won't break things on XP.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
