I need some help [CAD program]

Hey,

I am new to this program. I am stuck in a sticky situation. I ran out of room on my partition on my mac book, and I need to put a CAD program on it. I figured I would by a flash drive and stick it on it and everything would be jolly, but it is not working. I need to get things to work by tomorrow for class. I have a 16GB Sandisk flash drive which should hold my CAD program and then some. I am running a 64 bit version of windows 7. The flash drive is formatted for fat 32. What version of the CAD Program should i use, 32 or 64? How do I istall this on my flash drive. Any help would be good. Thanks!

Cheers

HI

and welcome here Smile

I doubt that you can put your CAD program onto the drive. All programs here need special work before you can install them to a drive and something as big as a CAD program surely isnt a lot easier.

The best way in my opinion is to find some data files to put on the drive so you can install the CAD program to your Mac.

I'm a little confused

Are you saying that you have both a Mac Book and a Windows computer?
So is this a program for Mac or for Windows?
The PortableApps here, and the process for portablizing them, is currently only made for Windows applications.

I think Simeon's got the answer, tho - back up some documents onto the flash to make room and install the program on the MacBook.

As for all those numbers:
64-bit Windows means that the operating system can use 64-bit processors.
It can run either 64-bit or 32-bit applications.

FAT32 is a filesystem which is readable by many operating system, it has nothing to do with 64-bit versions of software.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Nowadays,

you can run Windows on a MAC. So I think he uses Win 7 on a Mac.

Provided you have bootcamp.

Provided you have bootcamp. And, yes, that is also my assessment of the situation.

32 or 64 bit will work on a 64 bit computer. But only 32 bit will run on a 32 bit computer.

BUT, depending on what CAD program you are using, it won't start if you just copy the installed files to your flash drive. You could install the program onto the flash stick, but you would need to make sure it mounts with the same drive letter each time.

The BIG cad company has probably put as much money into anti-piracy as they have the actual software. But, if you have a .edu email account threw your school, Autodesk will give a you a free 1 year copy of autocad. And, IMHO there is no cad like AutoCAD. Nothing comes close.

Progress so far

Hey,

To clear things up a bit:
1) I am running Windows 7 (64 bit version) w/ bootcamp on my 3 year old mac book with an intel chip
2) I made the partition too small (32gb) because I already have another CAD software on it (Solid Works). Most CAD prgrams don't run on mac.
3) I got it to download and install eventuallaly. I am using a educational version of Pro Engineer, but it took forever.
4) Soilid Works> Pro E > Auto Desk

Ok. I am having issues with my flash drive falling asleep and then part of the program doesn't opperate properly. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks for previous help.
